Well for the sake of argument let's say a miracle happens and the Dolphins make the playoffs, then your next point comes up. The QB and anemic offense would get them killed. The Jets weren't great on offense last year either, but they were the #1 defensive team, and the #1 rushing team. Miami can't move the ball to save their lives and against playoff competition that will kill them. Besides, can you imagine Henne at Arrowhead in January? lmao, the O/U on Henne turnovers would be 4, tbh.

Well this I understand...win your division and you're in. I got that, but that's where the system is kind of screwed up if you ask me. I'm not saying the NFL should be like the NCAA and have a "BCS Top 25" equivalent, because I do kind of believe the 1A and 2A schools get screwed...

But on the same token it just kind of sucks that you can have teams with winning records miss the playoffs simply because a weak team in a weak conference wins it's division and takes up one of those playoff spots.

I don't know what the solution is, but I know it does indeed suck...and yes, as much as I despise the New England Patriots...when they finished 11-5 and missed the playoffs, that was a travesty as well.

i think the playoffs are pretty much done but i am rooting for at least one more win but really two more. 8-8 means we improved last year so thats important but because its such a small inceremental step it may cause ownership to worry. Thats why I'm just rooting for two more wins. A two game or a 14% improvement year to year is something that should shut ownership up and cause him to keep his nose out of the front office decision making process.

    1. Our "QB and anemic offense" didn't get us killed vs a 9-3 Jets did it? They didn't get us killed vs a 10-3 Steeler team that we were cheated a W from. They didn't get us killed vs an 8-5 Packer team either.

    2. This "same QB/anemic offense" beat the #1 defensive team that you reference (twice last year).

    3. why? bc Arrowhead is much colder than playing 4 years in Ann Arbor?

I like how you reference us not being able to move the ball on "playoff competition" when it's actually "great defenses", not playoff teams as a whole, who are giving our offense problems. We've faced the top 4 scoring Ds in the league..... and 6 games vs top 6 scoring Ds. We've also had Special Teams crumble in games that placed our offense in a TOUGH hole. See NE.

It's humorous how you've tried to twist this into "not being able to move the ball vs playoff competition"!!....... as if a "playoff" team like KC automatically means that they have a great D when in fact it's ranked: 14th in pts, 18th in yards allowed, 16th in 3rd down %, 15th in Yards/play, 22nd in pass yards allowed, 16th in QB rating, 23rd in INTs, 16th in pass TDs, 15th in rush D, 17th in rushing ave, 13th in sacks.

Surrrrre...... Gotchya..... Henne, who played 4 years in Ann Arbor and faced defense after defense this year that poop out ones like KC's, is all of a sudden going to have the worst outing of his career and be eaten alive by the Chiefs. Yeah, Ok. :glare:

I also find it funny that you're bringing up his days in the perenially overrated Big 10 conference. The only team worth a **** the last 10 years in the Big 10 was OSU, and how did Henne fair against them?

Odd, if anything Henne has shown to be an effective caretaker Qb, he can mother hen the ball and win games, he is not top starting Qb however he does fill his role well enough I guess.

    Caretaker wins:

    --Vikings game
    -First Bills game
    -2nd jets game

In our other 4 wins, Henne has played quite well.

Now that is not to say he is something that he is not as basically he is reminding me of a Trent Edwards, but he is not as afraid to take a hit as Edwards was at the end of his time in Buffalo.

You call 5-18 for 55 yards with 2 turnovers and 6 total first downs (zero in the 2nd half) a caretaker win?

My 9-year old godson could put up those #'s.

The Dolphins are 31st in the league (ahead of only the lowly Panthers) in PPG at 17.3.

Yep, your godson could have a future as a NFL Qb.

Henne played well enough to win, and that is more important than Stats in gaining that "W".

Eh, it is all about "W"'s and "L"'s, I suspect that in wins Henne plays really well, in loses he is terrible.

Aside from the first jets game that is to say, and even then the game ended on an Int in the endzone.

    -Pats game..3 int's
    -Ravens game..3 int's
    -Browns game..3 int's

Which is a huge part of the reason why Henne is not exactly beloved by Dolphins fans, in fact that trend could probably be traced back to late last season I know in the 2nd bills game of 09 he had 3 consecutive int's in the 4th qtr that handed the Bills the game for example.

I respect you padre b/c you're a finfan who has the ability to balance optimism with realism, but that is the quintessential Vince Young defense. To suggest that any other QB not named Mark Sanchez couldn't put up similar or better stats that day is borderline insane, imo. If that's a caretaker game I'd hate to see what a bad game is

Eh, to drag another Qb in a different situation into the debate does not really illuminate anything..does it?

Henne played well enough to win, and if you watched the game it was easy to tell he was taking no chances..at all..which is the reason for the 5 first downs imho, the Jets staked the box vs the run, they would send 2 receivers out into patterns, unless they were wide open Henne would throw the ball over their heads and out of bounds.

Pretty much "Caretaker" Qb to the proverbial "T".

As for playoffs, we will see how things break out, 3 games left, Dolphins need help to make it into them, as well as a win in Foxboro which will feature Brady playing the whole game, it is just a puncher's chance anyway of making it in.

san diegos lost twice to oakland. I could see them losing further. Jets losing to buffalo would be the biggest maybe in my opinion. But then again buffalo will be playing starters so its possible I suppose.

Agree to disagree. If I was a defensive player forced to play 3 quarters and clean up 2 turnovers I'd be f*cking pissed. Behind closed doors you gotta believe that some of those guys are a little miffed at the offensive production the last 2 games.

This is the NFL, anybody can be coached to be a caretaker IF they have a good defense. The only game Henne stands out in this year is the Raider game. Every other game he's been horrible-to-pedestrian.

Oh yes, the fact it is such a young Defense keeps that tamped down, but amongst the Veterans you know it has to chaff.

Titans, 1st Jets game, Raiders, not exactly spectacular but credit where it is due if blame is going to be assigned.

He was adequate in the other two. I don't think people realize just how good Miami's D has been this year. They are 1-5 at home and the defense more than held its own in 4 of those losses. Jets game was not good, but special teams cost them the New England game.

this cant happen as Miami lost to Balt, so the tie breaker goes to them.....

the only way Miami makes the playoffs is if the Jets absolutly tank it, and loses out..and Miami wins out...Miami cannot garner the #3, and 4 because they arent division winners, so that leaves the Jets or whoever beats the Jets...if Balt wins one more they guarntee a tie with Miami to which they have the breaker......so now it comes down to 1 spot...and it is the Jets....

Yeah I agree, we can pretty much forget about us taking the Ravens spot. At this point we (Dolphins) would have to go 3-0, Chargers 2-1, Colts 2-1, and the Jets 1-2 and we'd get in. 1 of the 2 Jets losses would have to be to Buffalo putting them at 3-3 in the the division giving our Dolphins the edge with the 4-2 advantage in the division if we were to win out.

We're likely to be favored in both home games, and quite possibly the Pats game on the road "if" they're resting starters at that point. The Jets will be underdogs in both upcoming road games against the Steelers and Bears, but will likely be favorites against the Bills. The Colts have one tough game left on their schedule and that's this week at home against the Jags, and the Chargers have it the easiest the rest of the way IMO, but can easily be upset by the 49ers (which are still playing for a playoff spot themselves) and a tough division opponent on the road against the Broncos.

So anything can happen, like some one mentioned already "you can talk playoffs till your mathematically eliminated" lol.

And heck the Jets were in a similar situation this late last season, having everything go their way, so why not us this time around right?

Lol, I know I may be hoping for too much but I'm a fan and still believe.

I agree, I believe we're done as far as the playoffs is concerned, but I want to see how well our team plays knowing that the season is over. Do we rise in the face of certain failure, or do we implode?

If we implode, I think it's time to take a serious look at both certain players as well as some on the coaching staff.

I can't believe so many are trashing the idea of us making it to the playoffs....why even watch a single game if you're automatically going to bash the team and root against them?

We have about a 10% chance of making the playoffs right now, and if the season ended today we'd be out. There are a lot of tough games left to play though and anything can happen; that's part of being an NFL fan. Of the eight teams ahead of us, at least two of them will choke and give us the opportunity to squeak in....it's just up to us on whether or not we take advantage of it.

I personally do not see the Jets winning another game this year, and the Bills are a heck of a lot better than anyone gives them credit for. Everyone keeps talking about the offense, and the Bills have one of the top offenses in football right now. They'll beat the Jets in week 17 just to end the season on a high note. Anyway, if the Jets are swept, that's 1 way in.

On a side note, if we do squeak in and somehow end up in the #7 spot, I like our chances in a rematch against Pittsburg. With that first win that was stolen from us, we'd be sitting pretty right now at the #6 slot and the pressure would be on others. I think if we meet them again in the postseason, we'll stomp their asses so hard that the momentum could carry us deep into the playoffs.

The Colts, Chargers, Chiefs, or Jags would be another path to land the #8 spot. I think the Ravens are good to go, but the other four have struggled all year and none of their games are a sure thing. Of course, we need to beat the Pats and Bills as well, so the road isn't easy regardless. I do know that we play the Pats tough as nails and our special teams issues from the first game away should be mostly corrected.

If we win all three games, we have about a 45% chance of making the playoffs. This discussion comes up every year, and the fact of the matter is that it relly doesn't matter what other teams do....we have to close strong. If we win four straight and the defense finds a catching rythym, we can beat anybody in the NFL on any given day. If we grab these three tough wins, someone will choke....so don't worry about that. Just be a Fin fan and let the rest take care of itself.

I am sticking by my original prediction of 2012 for a full superbowl run, and I don't think we have any business in the playoff's this year. I'd rather see us miss the postseason and get better draft picks. Since we have no 2nd round pick this year, I'd like to get the highest draft pick in round 1.

If the Chargers win out then no... If the Colts win out and the Jags go 2-1 then no... We did poorly against the conference so we lose out on tie breakers to anyone. I believe the only way in is if we go 3-0, Chargers and Colts 2-1, and Jets 1-2 with one of their loses being handed by the Bills and then we're in.

Well, fundamentally I agree, as much as I'd love a rematch with the Stealers in Pittsburgh, to me having that last game in Foxboro matter is probably more important as this very young team will have it's nose blooded a bit with what it is like to play games that matter in Janaury.

That is the sort of experience that will come in handy in 2011 as the fellas will know what it takes to compete and not just "be happy we had a good season".

The only team in contention that we can win a tiebreaker against is the Chiefs.

Only ones that matter is one KC loss, then Jacksonville beating Indy, or losing to Indy and the Texans. Either one works. If the Jets lose out those things actually have a decent chance of happening.

The Jets can beat the Steelers or Bears, they just have to lose to one of those teams. They HAVE to lose to the Bills for the Dolphins to make it. They can lose to both the Steelers and Bears and it wont matter if they beat Buffalo. The Bills mostly control the Dolphins' playoff hopes.
