Ok, so this is how we're going to win our next SB. Check point 1: It seems that most, including myself, believe that Henne won't come close to being a great qb. However, I do think Henne can become a decent qb (whatever the hell that means). I'll be content if he can manage an offense and not cause our offense to go into self destruct mode with int's. Check point 2: We're not in a position to acquire a great qb in the draft or in FA. Maybe Kolbs from Philly might be an option but I keep thinking about Feely! In other words, we're stuck with what we have a the qb position. Check point 3: We need to load up on other areas on the offense to become a very good O. Improving the interior O-line is a must. We also need a dynamic offensive weapon (Te or RB). You don't need a great QB to score a shiot load of points. Check point 4: Our D needs to continue to develop and acquire talent at the ilb position next to Dansby. We need to take our D to the next level. Check point 5: We win our SB with a dominant D and a very good but not dynamic offense.....remember the Ravens?
we go nowhere w/o the franchise QB, time to step up in the draft. Henne is mediocre to total bust as a QB. we need to make the investment in 2011 we go nowhere w/o the franchise QB, time to step up in the draft.
The problem with going for a QB in round 1 is where we will be drafting ... it's a crap shoot. Mallett? (assuming he's available) Newton? Luck? None of those shout, "the next top 5-10 QB in the league." Mallett is the closest but, while he's got a gun and a half, he's a huge target and is not a quick release guy. If the Mizzou QB comes out, he's likely a 2nd round pick but could fall to the 3rd (though some think he won't come out). He has a very good motion, put up much bigger #'s with good receivers last year; and has proto-typical size at 6'5, 235. Plus, he's an academic all-american so he's no dummy. I don't think we could wait until the 3rd to get him if he does come out; we'd likely need to trade down to get a higher pick in the 2nd and draft him.
A lot of wishful thinking and luck in this plan...not very realistic, but an overall general idea of how to go about doing it...
Luck is easily the best QB and the next top 5/10 guy in this league IMO. Mallett is not a very good prospect IMO. Both he and Locker will not live up to their billing.
I agree with Alen's assessment. Luck is one of those top 5 potential guys and everybody else is a crap shoot. All of those people saying we have to make the QB investment early are ignoring what is actually available. We should take a QB early if we can, but the reality is that whomever that is, is very unlikely to be even as good as Henne next year or even the year after that. The vast majority of QBs take time to develop.
if we had a chance at luck i would do it in a heartbeat. he's the best prospect since peyton manning. as sure a thing as you will ever find (90% since nothing is 100%). I'm actually somewhat high on Mallet. I know he's a bit erratic but to me he's a better prospect than Flacco. Still, I wouldnt waste a pick on him if I'm this FO. You dont have the time to develop him. If you feel you need a QB you have to go FA and get a vet. Hasselback, maybe Kolb but you cant afford to spend three years developing a QB for the next coach and front office. You are better off concentrating on the offensive line with all your resources and trying to add a RB, TE and maybe a speed WR. IF you fix the oline and add at leat one playmaker you are almost guaranteed a playoff spot and that will keep you in Miami for another couple of years. Next year is playoff or bust for this front office and coaching staff. They cant waste a pick on a QB that doesnt help them keep their jobs
If you don't like Henne then cut bait this yr. because there is a strong QB class coming out with Luck, Cam, Mallett and Locker. Otherwise build around Chad and the running game. Or make a legit offer to Philly for Kolb, I think he is pretty good.
