The 18 game season is going to be a reality and it is my opinion that only the owners want it to make more revenue. Most of the players do not want the extra games with the chance of wearing down their careers. A lot of the fans, me included, feel that an 18 game season would dilute the product and all of the fun records I grew up watching will be smashed. I just came up with a stupid and horrible but elegant solution to the problem. Expand the season to 18 games, however only allow players to play 16 games. I know this will never happen, however it did get me to thinking about the strategy that it would take to make that happen. The stupid idea does solve the problems of having the players hurt while still giving the coaches new games for revenue. A lot of roster rule changes would have to happen, however I do think it would be a fun change. What do you think of my stupid idea?
First off there needs to be a rookie ceiling..... Eighteen football games you have to open up the roster Dress 53? IR will change as well.
Meaning a player can only play in 16 of the 18 games (i.e., you have to bench a guy twice a season)? Interesting notion if I understand correctly. A buy week for players so to speak. Fantasy football players would go nuts. If by ceiling, you mean a "cap" on the money they can earn (i.e., no more mega contracts for the Jamarcus Russell's of the world), I couldn't agree more. Gotta be the most ridiculous thing (aside from the insane amount of money these guys make anyway) I've ever seen. Honestly, I don't have a problem with expanding the season. Call me crazy but two more Phins games a season appeals to me. But, the MNF crew had an interesting conversation last night about the possibility of a team advancing to the playoffs with a losing record. Gruden's solution? Only teams with winning records advance. So, in other words, if a division winning team ends up with a sub .500 record, and another team in another division (that is not a division winner, or a wildcard team) would then advance. Essentially, the best six teams in each conference would advance. And frankly, that makes a lot of sense to me. Hopefully the NFL and it's competition committee are thinking of everything associated with the impact of an 18 game season.
Think what an 18 game season will do to all the season stats and records...it would skew everything. That is why I kind of like the notion of players only being able to play a max of 16 games in the regular season.
Well, they play an 18 game schedule in the CFL and tbh, the only thing I notice is players injured early in the year with what would be season ending injuries in the NFL wind up coming back to play in the last couple of games, with an 18 game schedule Tony Romo would be able to come back and have an impact. Not in favor of a rookie wage scale per se, imho it is bad enough they are being told where they can work, now they are being told how much they can be paid for working there.
are they planning on adding an extra bye week into this? can only be a good thing.or extend the trade deadline some?
Yes, there will be an extra bye week. I would rather have a 17 game schedule and an expanded playoffs. Expanded playoffs and adding wild card teams would solve the problem of teams winning a bad division at 8-8 and teams at 9-7/10-6 missing the wild card in a good division.
Wow, could you imagine an 18game season with all these QB season ending injuries and backup QBs? Not including Peyton Manning with Colts... by Division AFC - East - Dolphins Henne IR AFC - North - Steelers Rothlesberger with broken finger still playing AFC - South - Texans Schaub IR and Leinart (IR?) both out 3rd string QB playing & Colts (Manning) and Collins IR both out 3rd string QB in essence is playing AFC - West - Raiders Campbell IR & Chiefs Cassell IR NFC - East - Eagles Vick broken ribs NFC - North - Bears Cutler broken thumb NFC - South - NFC - West - Cardinals Kolb And that doesnt include normal 1 or 2 game nicks or bruises that have cost teams some QB play. Crazy!!!
Dupree I'll match your stupid idea and raise it with some insanity! A few thoughts: 1. Get rid of the 53 man roster. We have a salary cap and a minimum wage in place. Allow teams to dress as many players as they choose. We do not need to limit rosters to keep teams competitive. 2. Bye weeks are managed poorly and need to be reformatted. If its 1 bye per season then make it the two middle weeks 7&8 or 8&9. Give the entire NFC off 1 week and the AFC off the other week. Alternate it between them each year. If you go to 18 games and 20 week season go with 6&7 + 13&14. That way it gives everyone an equal rest. 3. If the NFL is so bent on making this a passing game and restricting defenses from being aggressive, make it more then 10yrds for a 1st down. Force offenses to start with 1st and 15 so at least defenses can run more nickle and dime packages giving them a better chance to stop offenses. It will also give league what they want, more passing. It will also make running backs less involved in the game so less injuries will occurr 4. Get rid of the draft and allow teams to offer contracts to as many players as they want without going over the salary cap and allow rookies to sign with whoever they want based on whoevers offer they like the best.
