I'm sure you all have a better memory than me. Can anyone remember back through all the trades and drafts to figure out how many picks we've spent on everyone; White, Henne, Beck, Thigpen, Feeley etc.
Well there is Cade Mckown, Joey Harrington, Josh Heupel, AJ Feely, Daunte Culpepper, John Beck, Tyler Thigpen, Pat White, Chad Henne. So all I can come up with is 9.
White - 2nd rd pick Henne - 2nd rd pick Feeley - 2nd rd pick Culpepper - 2nd rd pick Beck - 2nd rd pick Thigpen - 5th rd pick Green - 5th rd pick Maybe others. I think we did get a 2009 7th rd pick for McCown to the Panthers in 08 though if it makes you feel any better.
Come to think of it didnt we then trade AJ Feely and like a 5th rounder to SD for Cleo Lemon, if so that would be 11.
Actually there have been too many for me to remember. While it is quite frustrating that all those picks have been wasted. What is even more maddening is that the Dolphins passed over Drew Brees and Matt Ryan in the first rounds when they were both available to them coming out of college. It is the fact they passed over these type of QB's which has forced them over the years to trade draft picks in an attempt to upgrade the QB position. Unfortunately, none of these QB's have been the answer and all the draft picks are now playing for other teams. Of course, Parcells did pick Henne and White. White is now playing baseball in the minor league baseball and Henne has one foot out the door. I guess it will take more draft picks before they hopefully get it right.
Let's just hope whoever picks our next QB understands how important a QB is to the success, or lack thereof, to an NFL franchise and finally invests a FIRST round pick on a QB. Enough 2nd round bargain shopping. PLEASE GOD NO MORE 2ND ROUND PICKS ON QBS!!! At this point I'd say using another 2nd pick on a QB would be a bad pick no matter who the prospect. It's just plain bad luck for this franchise.
This whole thing is overrated... cough... how many picks did we use on quarterbacks WHILE Marino was our #1 guy? Scott Secules a sixth rounder and Scott Mitchell a fourth rounder... not to mention that bust Jim Jensen who was supposed to be a qb, but we had to convert to a wide receiver I mean the guy was a 11th round pick. what?
I know a 1st round QB pick isn't automatic franchise QB....but it would be nice to actually TRY IT since the last time they did in 1983 it worked out. Unless someone becomes available in FA or trade. [think Denver will dump Orton with Tebow playing? Stupid Bronco moves helped us out with Marshall and Nolan]
FAs seem to do the best job. Fiedler, Frerrote, Griese, and Pennington came for nothing. Griese especially got a poor shake with such a piss poor pass protection group. The next year he tore it up under Gruden.
I gpt killed here last week for suggesting we do that. I sau do use that # 1 if you can trade up for one this year that is worthy, but this regime blew it BIG TIME by not taking Ryan. You can always find a LT but Matt Ryans don't grow on trees.
Could do something different and trade towards the future rather than force a QB as Miami's attempted for years. Perhaps Miami can take the salary of the first round pick, use that in FA on another addition (say instead of Mark Ingram---> Michael Bush) and get a future first rounder in 2012+a 2011 2nd. So all in all Miami spends the same but gets two players this year and a first next year. They use that first next year and the normal first to either trade up for that QB or you do it once again and accumulate perhaps three first round picks in 2013 to trade up for a top QB. It's a little bit crazy but I think if you realize the needs that the team has now (RB, 2 TE, speed WR, LG, C) are not needs you need to spend a top 14 pick on, you can use that to your advantage, covering more needs and setting yourself up for when the team can give a rebuilding team an irresistible package of three firsts for a franchise QB. Andrew Luck for example would be ours if we had three firsts this year to trade to Carolina. You kind of force a franchise QB drafting through patience rather than picking the BPA this year on a guy that's not a franchise QB. I just hate the fact that Miami's never patient enough to keep its picks or accumulate future picks. If you give a GM some stability, perhaps Ireland would seriously think about something like that. Instead he'll likely use the 14th overall to grab a need position that will hardly make an impact. That's aggravating, it doesn't help a franchise. Miami between 2000-2010 spent first round picks on a nickel CB, two on Ricky Williams, a right tackle, one extremely high draft pick on a 23 turning 24 year old RB, a hybrid CB/S, a speed WR and then finally they began to turn it around with top positions and good picks. That was eight drafts! Eight years of what should have been first round picks for effective players. Three of those firsts are about to go out the window on two older RBs, the RT is breaking down, and the WR was traded for a fifth. The fact that Ireland has accumulated any talent with the short-sighted, let's produce now strategy of three different regimes is actually commendable. Had Miami actually had decent GMs throughout those years it would have something to show for it rather than two RBs and a RT that hopefully is healthy next year. That's garbage. That's why Miami sucked so bad for so many years. Had they picked a quarterback in all of those years they'd be better off than they are now. How ridiculous is that? There's a reason Parcells did not spend firsts on certain positions. They're a waste, a complete waste long-term and even in the case of an Adrian Peterson or L.T. How many snaps do those guys affect these days with RBBC? 25% of offensive snaps plus whatever "presence" they bring? That's terrible. I'd rather have a top guard or center who affects every single snap on offense for what could be YEARS. Nick Mangold for example will be the Jets center until he's probably 37 years old. Years and years of constant excellent production versus Ronnie Brown's run from 2005-2010? Comon and one was a #2 pick versus a late first. Have some ****ing foresight Miami. You want a quarterback? You want a #1 overall pick while filling need positions? Have some patience that's how you do it.
No first round picks. Which is why we still don't have the guy. You want to shop for your QBs in the dollar store this is what you get.
It's important to know where we have been, but more important to know where we are going. Forget the continuing saga of Chad Henne, with Pennington retiring (God I think he'll have too) and Tyler Thigpen as free agent this year, I see using number one on Ryan Mallett or Jake Locker. If we do, it will be our first number one QB pick since Marino, and something that is long over due. http://walterfootball.com/draft2011QB.php
The worst part is, it's the trade that we didn't make for a QB that's the one we should regret. Spielman had a trade for Matt Hasselbeck agreed upon. Wanny wanted to sleep on it. Ron wolf told Spielman he couldn't guarantee the deal would be there in the morning. Seattle then trades for Hsselbeck a few hours later. They then played in a SB.
Maybe we should stop asking what was wrong with all of these QB's - turn the microscope around - and ask what's wrong with us? Why can't the Miami Dolphins organization develop its QB talent?
The majority of teams who have top quarterbacks took them in round one. Since Miami refuses to do that it's no wonder they've repeatedly failed. Amazingly enough this isn't just limited to one regime. I'll give Nick Saban a partial pass b/c I don't think any good QBs came out in 2005. Amazing that Wannstedt and company wouldn't even attempt to get one of those QBs in 2004 though. We didn't mind overpaying for somebody else's backup though.
Again though you either go the inexpensive route through FA or a very cheap trade for a QB or go for it all. Nothing in between. I'm fine with the team if they don't like Jake Locker, that's alright. Let's just not go the route of a trade for Kevin Kolb or a take a quarterback in the second round, that nonsense. Top quarterbacks float to the absolute top of the class. Flawed QBs sink to the middle of the round. Find a way to get a top guy. If you can get Luck that's something. Not sure though how you do that. CK floated the idea of a franchise tag on McDaniels. That could help to be sure. I'd be interested in that plus a first and second, but I'm still not sure they do it. Right now the best course of action looks like grabbing a free agent quarterback and accumulating picks to make a big move one day for that top quarterback. Pittsburgh didn't plan to get Roethlisberger, it just happened. We didn't plan to get Marino he came along. GB didn't think Rodgers would be there but he was. Other teams take excellent QBs at the top but most of these guys shine and aren't so heavily questioned as a guy like Russell. I was just curious how in the world that guy was being evaluated as the #1 overall pick. It made no sense. Then guys like Boller, Losman etc... They snuck in just because they're QBs. Mallet is the same Newton is the same Locker is the same These guys are not comparable to Luck, Bradford, Stafford, Ryan, Cutler. At best you're hoping Mallet becomes Joe Flacco. That's nothing to hang your hat on. That guy is not that good. I want a franchise QB not just a young QB. Get it right, until then we'll sit tight with a veteran QB as Miami has in its most successful seasons in this decade.
Sorry, but I don't read through the threads like I used to. I did see the subject and rejected....well I rejected all of the picks and QB's we have had since Marino. Ohhh, except Henne because he's a puppet(of ----< fill that in) and he's also OUR starter.
Luck has stated that he's returning to Stanford (I would too if I knew I'd be going to Carolina). Anyhow, it might be wise to trade back this year if possible to acquire an extra 2012 first. Maybe we can trade back with a team who will be in the crapper next season and we land a high pick out of it, which we could pair with our regular 1st in an attempt to get Luck in 2012. It's worth a thought. How about if we can trade back with Carolina to get this year's 2nd from them along with 2012's first...... which could en up becoming the golden ticket who get the Luck. lol
Now that's an idea. You trade back in the round to grab a second rounder. Then you trade that 1st to another team for their 1st next year and perhaps a little more, maybe a fourth rounder. Now when you get to the team's second round pick, you trade that and the third for a future 1st as well giving you three firsts next year. That'll do the job next year. You just have to take care of your needs via free agency. I don't think it's impossible, but there's no way a coaching staff under fire does it. If Ireland perhaps had a five year extension he'd do it. We're more likely to sign a little competition for Henne, draft a guy like Yates and attempt to resuscitate the running game. I tried to send you a PM of a ToddPhins orgy roster. See what you think.
The one thing that gives me hope about Chad Henne is that unlike Palmer, Orton, and McNabb, Henne is at his best when he's behind by a close margin. That's the toughest place to be for a pro quarterback. The defense is throwing its best at you and you're likely passing based on Henning's predictability. Palmer's passer rating is staying afloat thanks to some big time QB number boosts when way down against prevent defenses. McNabb is somewhat like Henne but not as good as Henne, but he's better when he's ahead. Orton has benefited quite a bit from being far ahead or far behind, in between he's not that great of a quarterback as Desides has pointed out. I think out of these guys we've got the right guy. Young QBs make mistakes. I'll drink a shot to Henne finishing the year strong. I hope he turns it around, because the guys in free agency and the draft aren't worth much.
