http://blogs.palmbeachpost.com/thed...b-ricky-williams-of-illegal-crackback-blocks/ Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham was asked a seemingly innocuous question today about the Dolphins’ use of the Wildcat formation. Instead, Cunningham used the opportunity to accuse Ricky Williams of cheating, and vowed to take matters in his own hands this Sunday if Williams tried his allegedly dirty tactics against the Lions. “All I can say to Ricky Williams — and I want him to know this — if he hits one of our [defensive backs] in the back on a crack block, then I’m coming on the field,” Cunningham told Detroit media on Thursday. “I mean, he’s had a couple of knockouts, but they’ve been not legal. I’ll just put it at that.” A “crack block” or “crackback block” typically occurs on a running play to the outside, when an offensive player (usually a receiver or running back on the perimeter) goes against the flow of the play and nails a defensive player who isn’t looking. Crack blocks are illegal if they are made in in the back or below the waist, and Cunningham is accusing Williams of blocking defenders in the back. Illegal crack blocks garner a 15-yard penalty if they are called. The Denver Broncos made the maneuver famous in their running game in the 1990s and 2000s under Mike Shanahan. Apparently this guy is a little bit crazy. Of all people to go after...Ricky Williams? At least it gives something for Dolphins fans to cheer for. Give Ricky the ball 15 times Sunday! Sam Madison commented and called him "old and senile" haha. [Guess Gunther has something in common with Henning?]
While it isn't as bad as Omar Kelly talking about 3-gap responsibilities, Ben Volin doesn't know what he's talking about. The Broncos weren't famous for crackback blocks, they were famous for cut blocking. They would run their off-tackle stretch plays, and get the defense moving in one direction, then the defender on the back side of the play would cut a trailing defender, leaving a big *** opening for the back to cut and reverse field on.
Exactly. Huge reason why it was successful with us was big *** Timmy Bowens, Daryl Gardener and Larry Chester. I still remember the quote by one of the Dolphins, talking about before the first play, Tim would walk up to the Broncos OL and tell them that **** aint riding with him. EDIT : Here it is...miss Bowens so much! http://www.accessmylibrary.com/article-1G1-125971596/cut-blocks-cheap-shots.html
I remember Gunther Cunningham. He used to be the head coach for the Chiefs a few years ago. Didn't have much luck there either.
gunther?? oh no! the Germans are after us!!
Gunther is the "Bubbles" of the NFL. He's probably the most likable, virtuous yet misguided coach in the NFL trailer park.
I think we should throw to Ricky on the sideline, have him miss and flatten this coach. See; the Dolphins just don't get any respect.
LOL As long as it's not with two minutes left in the game.We have a hard time getting out of bounds when in counts...
LOL. . . . Since flattening this coach would happen on the sideline the NFL wouldn't see it for at least a week. . . (just ask the Jets)
The only other Gunther I've ever heard of was Gunther Toody on Car 54 Where Are You? OOO OOO. we all know how that turned out.
I don't recall Ricky getting fined once this year. The over/under is 3.4 seconds for Gunther to wind up in a 2 month comma.
