Merged:Michael Lombardi: Parcells has convinced Ross to keep Sparano

I've grown cold on Sparano. If this is true, and I'm sure it has merrit, well then I sure the heck hope that Sparano is spending time evaluating himself. He needs to learn clock management and is one of the worst at asking for replays.

I think most of us will get our wish with this though. Henne will stay, and another Qb will be brought in to compete.

Now fix the damn offensive line with some solid bruisers and if it's thru free agency do some research to see if there is an history of injuries. Ha! Next up, get one or two more playmakers for the NEW OC and let the competition begin.

Just heard Lombardi...... "I think Parcells did the goalie save"

Never hang your hat on speculation.

That is the million dollar question, if this is factual, does Sparano ride or die with Chad Henne in 2011?

I wouldn't if I were Sparano, not unless Henne is just a different player in TC 2011.

Who cares what he runs as long as it works. In his 15 seasons in Pitt he had top 10 offenses 7 times. Only 3 times did his offenses ever fall into the bottom third of the league (ie: 20 or worse).

I can live with an awesome offense that's based much more on the run.

Flipside is...if were looking for a coach that can fix our passing game then yes Cowher isn't the guy to be looking for unless paired with a GM that gives him a surefire QB (only 2 top 10 passing performances and 1 of those was with Big Ben in those 15 years).

If anyone though should know what it means to get a solid QB it has to be Cowher. He spent so many years with crap at QB given to him by his front office. Surely he'd be one to push for a QB.

I'm not really sure why, in this case, they would do much differently.

There's already a young, potentially dominating defense in place. From all accounts they pretty much know they need to revamp the offense. They'll probably need 2 QB's, which may mean drafting 1 or 2 and acquiring a veteran that can lead the team if Henne still cant stop sh*ting the bed. There are other weaknesses on offense you can draft for, and plenty of quality young RB's and Guards that may be available via free agency.

This thread is totally going off assumption.
    Lombardi's opinion.
If it has some legs we will find out. So far nothing.

Sparano's contract is up after 2011, so theory is he'll do what it takes to keep his job, which means playoffs, and maybe even a playoff win or more. They are going to go after a QB someplace. [and hopefully fix the OLine, seems incognito is working out at center though so it could get easier.]

Carson Palmer just turned 31. Because he plays for the Bengals I'm willing to think he can be a great QB on another team. Same goes for Orton, that franchise is a mess. Fins can get Palmer easier right, no trade? And Henne will still be there, maybe this was a Sophomore slump and he can show something in pre-season if they find someone else to start.

He can't be as bad as Culpepper was, and maybe can be like Brees best case scenario. If that did happen, Dolphins would probably have him 6 years or so.

Exactly, I see you did a bit of informative editing, Cowher is pretty much Sparano in terms of an approach to the offense, that is one of the things that drove me nutz about "OMG GET COWHER!!!"

We would not be doing to many things differently than the way they are approached now, if folks want more offense, Jon Gruden would have been the guy but he is pulling down 5 millie from the Bucs for doing absolutely nothing for them.

When Cowher left and he heard that Ben R and the offense were going to open things up, Cowher said "that does not make much sense"...the Steelers won the SB that yr..

Palmer would need to be cut or traded for. He’s under contract through 2014. Indications are that he wants out of Cincy and Mike Brown might be willing to accommodate him to save some green. Brown is a genuine cheapass.

Orton, however, is just plain terrible. Product of a system in every way imaginable, and most of his stats come in garbage time after the other team has already locked things down. He’s an excellent fantasy football QB, but in terms of an NFL starter who can take a team to the playoffs and Super Bowl… no. Hell no.

Speaking of the playoffs, it would take at least one playoff win to get Sparano a contract extension, I’m thinking. Making the playoffs won’t be enough by itself.

Great, we've got a Manchurian candidate for an owner. Huizenga should have never sold control to Ross in the Parcell's deal. Oh well, should make for some interestingly ugly scenes at Sun Life next year...

I question how much influence Sparano will have on the roster. While his job - assuming he remains - will pretty much be playoffs or bust, I feel that Ireland is generally pretty safe unless we bring in a mega name like Cowher who may demand full control. Even then, Ireland may act in GM role, but not have the final call.

Ireland I think will still look out for the future of the franchise - I do not believe he is "tied at the hip" to Tony.

As long as Henning is not our cordinator and Henne is not our starting QB, I'll give coach another year...and my first offseason request is to have training camp in bell glades or some sh$#..

But iam gonna look at cowher and Harbaugh real hard.

All points should be celebrated, this is stupid.

Nolan proves that Sparano can work with a great mind. I love how no one gives Sparano credit for the defense yet he gets all the blame for the offense. One of the reasons McDaniels was fired, IMO, was his inability to let a person who is superior at an area than he is do his job. Now the defense of the Broncos is a mess. Sparano has worked with Nolan all season and there hasn't been one peep about any troubles with them working together.

This tells me that if Miami does get a good offensive coordinator, that Sparano will be able to work with him to help fix the problem.

People love working with him. He works long hard hours, loves his job and the players love to play for him.

coaching wasnt the problem in 2010 so its a good thing we're not shaking it up. we just need Ireland to put on his scouting hat and focus it on offense. Fix the offensive line and get another RB with some breakaway ability and we're fine. Find a vet QB to compete with Henne but Henne will improve over the offseason so it may not be necessary. Of course its all dependent on how much. We cant have an incremental improvement, we need a major leap forward

I've got mixed feelings, if this comes to pass. At the very least Henning has to go and a new QB coach is needed too.

It also means that they will be hoping to see Henne "turn the corner" at QB. Which he might be able to under a better offensive system and coaching.

Throw everything into fixing the offense this offseason, which means fixing the OL and getting another playmaker at WR and/or TE. Probably need a fast third down back, but Sheets might be the answer to that.

Finally, Sparano has to learn to manage the clock and let the offense be more aggressive.

This was my argument yesterday Schmoo, and I got torn to shreds by some here. I think keeping Sparano makes it a lot tougher to get a qaulity OC here, knowing he had better produce, and that of Sparano or they are gone after 1 year....on top of that you will more than likely be saddled with Henne as the QB. This set of circumstances would make me pause to really ponder if I was Kubiak or any other quality OC. Likewise if Sparano was looking for a DC this year, he more than likely wouldn't get a Nolan type for next season. Some people on this board will never get it, as they love the Dolphins too blindly to see reality. Their orange & Aqua glasses always hide the truth from them, and they compound it by sticking their heads in the sand.

Truth is, this is not an attractive situation right now. There is likely a lot of stress and tension between the coaching staff because they know they are practically one foot out the door.

If some will put down their blind loyalty and look at the situation clearly, they will see it.

Maybe he does get someone of good quality, but I really think its either going to be someone from college that wants into the NFL or David Lee.

You know what they say about teaching an old dog new tricks ? Look at Dave Wannstedt. He has lost 3 jobs because he just couldn't get his head out of his azz in regards to offense, and learn to embrace modern 2000's football. He's now in disrepute in the NFL & in college ball. Sparano better have his mind open to new ideas or his tenure as the Dolphins coach may not last more than 7 or 8 games into next season.

Cowher seemed to prefer the hard nosed run style. But he ran the spread look with both O'donnell and Stewart so he wasn't dead set against doing what best suited his QB (offense).

Last year at this time it was clear that although the offense wasn't perfect, the defense wasn't giving them a chance in many of the games we lost. Big plays given up, 4th quarter collapses, giving up lots of early points, no pressure on QB. Sparano recognized the problem and turned the defense upside down. New staff. Signed Karlos Dansby. Cut Porter, Wilson, Ayodele. Let Taylor go. 7 defensive players drafted. The result? Suddenly we have one of the youngest and one of the best defenses in the NFL. Last year's defense plus this year's offense would have sent the team 1-7 not only at home but on the road as well.

I am confident that a turn around on offense this next year is possible under Sparano. I like Sparano's passionate blue-collar approach. He isn't perfect, but the players seem to love him and the feeling is mutual. He will only make the team better. The 11-5 playoff year in 2008 was a magical year, but a facade in many other ways. Half of the teams we played that year were worse than the 2010 Browns, Bills, and Lions. Our AFC East opponents were comparatively weak that year.

This year we will finish 7-9 or 8-8, no worse than last year, middle of the road. This regime took over the worst team in the NFL, and 3 years later we're in the middle of the pack. Not bad. Not the best it could be, but not bad.

As a fan though, it is really hard sometimes to stay patient after the last 10-15 years. Many of us are sick of being middle of the pack, and watch other teams surge forward into the playoffs out of mediocrity (Jets, Ravens, Saints, Falcons, and this year the Chiefs and Rams and Bucs and Bears). Look at the freaking Bucs, they're 9-6 and very much alive for a playoff spot in the toughest NFC division this year. They did it with a 2nd year head coach, 2nd year QB, a rookie WR, and an undrafted RB.

In the end, my head says Tony should get one more year. If it doesn't work, then it's thank you for 2008 and best of luck on your future endeavors.

Dan Henning's "retirement" will immediately make this team better.

How are going to turn around an offense when you don't have a quality player in the "most important position on the team" ? That will be key to this offseason. Finding another Chad Pennington might save Sparano for next season, but will he see enough into the future and realize he needs to finally draft a qb in the 1st round ? Obtaining a 1st round caliber QB might buy him even 2012, but he'd best get something done in a hurry once the season is over.

The best thing for this team is to identify a QB prospect that you love (whether it's Gabbert, Newton or Mallett doens;t matter to me) and spend whatever resources necessary to secure that player. A staff that has one year doesn;t do this. They find a veteran QB who can turn a few of the close losses this year into wins so we can make the playoffs. Maybe we still can;t make it to the SB, but they're just trying to survive.

If Ross really believes these are the right guys for the job, then he extends them and lets them build a consistent franchise

We don't need the bestest offensive guru in the entire universe.

We need someone who will improve on 30th ranked points scored to compliment a powerful defense and an overall disciplined tough team. All we need at this point is someone of good quality. Maybe we should take a chance on a younger guy with fresh energy instead of a guru looking for a payday and nice weather. You never know how things are going to shake up... immediately after Paul Pasq. was fired last year the top candidate for D coordinator seemed to be Al Groh. Who would have guessed in week 17 of last year that Mike Nolan would come to us?

Before Kubiak was Kubiak, he was a former backup QB and then a RB coach in college who was then given a chance by Mike Shanahan in 1995. Everybody has to start somewhere.

A halfway decent offense scoring 20 points in a game would have won the Steelers, Browns, and Bills games, and we were a goal-to-go away from sending the home Jets game into overtime, and the Patriots game would have been completely different without special teams blunders.

If we had even slight to moderate improvement on offense, especially in red zone and 2 minute situations, we would be sitting right now with at least 10 wins and maybe as much as 12. Our defense is that freaking good right now.

If that happens next year, Sparano gets an extension and we become a much more attractive situation right at the edge of being a contender.

My issue with this report has less to do with Sparano and more to do with the process Ross is using to evaluate this team.

First, why on Earth would you listen to Parcells at this point? He's certainly a biased observer and you're paying him to consult for the 49ers. He's the last guy I would listen too if I was Ross.

Second, if Ross believes Tony is a good coach and Ireland a good GM, then why not extend them? If he's not sure, why give them one more year to potentially screw up the franchise? Does Ross understand that they need a QB? How does he know that they can pick and develop one?

Is there anyone unbiased that he can consult with on these issues?
