we made the right move with picking jake long. if we would have picked matt ryan he would of had a season ending injury because we didn't have jake long.
We have no second rounder this year to move up. No ones going to take #15 and a 3rd or forth to move up high enough to get one. You can't trade players either with the collective bargaining agreement going on so it would be hard to do it honestly not impossible but real hard. Also we have an entire Offense to rebuild really. OLINE, Another wideout, 1 or two RB positions, a QB, a new offense, a new Head Coach probably. Man this team is a mess honestly we have more holes now that we did 3 years ago.
15 allows us the ability to move up if needed to get our QB and I believe we do just that if that player won't be there for Miami at pick 15. There is 3 or 4 seemingly legitimate QB's in the top 15 , we may not be this close with this depth again . We need a QB , get the guy you believe in and will lead this team to deep in the playoffs. Get him this draft.
No second rounder this year? You think that should and will stop a team that has been QB starved basically for a billion years? I don't. We are in a position where we can make it happen , depends if Miami wants it bad enough. They should , imo. They need it bad enough....
10 Teams? Hmm, if anything this is a unique draft in that Wr and LT's are plentiful, OLB's are not there this yr. Figure Panthers Qb Broncos (who are in a great trade out spot) DE Bills DE maybe Wr Go through the draft order...Qb's are not what you'd think they would be..we have a good shot.
BPA- Julio Jones (I'd love to grab him right before NE and stick it to the Pats for once)........ or I'd be all for trading Henne and our first to San Fran so we can move up for Blaine Gabbert. For me, it's Gabbert or nothing for QBs. Not a fan of running backs in the top 20 considering we split carries and the greater potential for injury (unless the guy is a total package). Trading back for Ryan Williams in the late 1st/early 2nd would be ok with me..... as would trading back for Kyle Rudolph.
Ignoring the total abuse of hindsight, its still a really a weak arguement to use the Ravens. Baltimore had a virtual all star team in 08, they were in WIN NOW mode. They could afford to spend draft picks on risky trade ups. We were coming off of 1-15 with holes everywhere and in need of every draft pick we could possibly get. Two franchises, two different mindsets, two sets of priorities. 2nd, the Ravens only played Flacco b/c Troy Smith got sick and Kyle Boller got hurt. His own coaches didn't even think he was ready. 3rd, Flacco has Rice, Heap, Mason, Boldin, Hoshmanilly, McGahee etc to get the ball to, a solid run game, and he has a defense that turns the opposition over. He has one of the better OCs in the league in Cam Cameron, who has a track record of developing QBs into stars (Brees-Rivers). Henne has no playmakers, no running game, a defense that doesnt turn people over or score, and a seemingly incompetent coaching staff with zero history of developing young QBs. If you think Flacco, or Ryan, or any other young QB would've walked in here and had instant success, you're dreaming.
If Luck doesn't come out, then what you just said is the way to go. Take our time and make sure we do it right. I know you like Mallett, but my guy is Gabbert. If this regime decides they want to open up the offense, then I'd consider trading a future first to get him.
Take BPA or trade down, pick up mostly offensive players, and give Henne another shot. While I am doubtful it'll pan out, getting a good QB in the draft this year just doesn't seem in the cards with the teams ahead of us and our lack of draft ammo. If we can't get our QB, improve everything else on offense and enter the season on the 'chance' that Henne really is a gem and has been held back. On second thought, better also make a play for a veteran if possible. Hopefully the bengals cut Palmer.
I don't think Henne's stock is high enough to trade him...In fact, if we waive him he may not even get picked up by a team. He's the Tuna's John Beck. Man, we have been destroying QB's since Fiedler. He's one of the most mistake prone QB's in the game. He locks onto targets. He hardly ever gets rid of the ball to avoid a sack. He has very limited mobility. If he is flushed out of the pocket, he'll just run with it, never looks downfield. Good for at least one obligatory interception per game. Has seemingly lost all touch on the deep ball. Has clearly regressed. F%#k, F#%kity, F*$k, F#%k...F#%k. He does however, have a good completion percentage. Nah, the next regime will have to try to put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
I agree Newton is a complete boom/bust guy which is why I wouldn't touch him at QB. Like you said, identify your guy who you want for the next 10 years. If there's the slightest bit of uncertainty based on bust potential, then I don't want the guy no matter how tremendous his upside "could be".
Ummm...Dan Marino not only made the playoffs in his first three seasons, he won the AFC East Division all three years too...
After Pennys first year here, during the off season, I was one of the guys hoping to see what Henne had that next year just to see if we were going to be set at QB or not. Well, I have seen all I need to see. Some of his problems can be coached, but one of his biggest faults cant. He has NO touch on the deep ball. We cant win like that. If you cant threaten them deep, they will crowd the line and dare you. I am done with wanting to see him anymore. We need to move on. He aint IT.
If we "do" the Palmer deal, then I'd rather give Henne the opportunity to compete with Carson under a new OC & upgraded offense rather than using a 3rd on a QB. We still have Brandstater who deserves a strong look.
I'm wondering how much <or if at all> it's hurting us to not have played Henne in 08 during that easy schedule so that this year was his 3rd year starting (against one of the toughest schedules) rather than a sophomore slump.
You have to think outside the box a little bit. If we trade our #1 this year and our #1 next year, we can move up into the Top 10 and get our QB. Throw in our 3rd round pick or a player like Ronnie Brown and we could move up into the Top 5. It all depends on what teams need, or who they like, and which players are still on the board. For example the Jets traded their 1st, 2nd, and a couple players to Cleveland to move up from the 17th spot to the 5th spot to draft Mark Sanchez. It can be done.
With Henning calling the plays? not at all... Miami's offense is like hitting your big toe with a hammer and wondering why it hurts...

Trading Wake would be one of the dumbest moves we have ever made. Even for a potential rookie Franchise QB. We have the best pass rusher in the NFL for cryin' out loud. He's young too. No way I trade away our best young defensive player when he is just coming into his prime. No way...
Give up Wake? What the hell? The Jests gave up their first and second rounders, and three token players. Not one of the best defensive players in the league. The trade all depends on where we feel we need to end up. Luck I think is as good as gone to Carolina, no chance. After that, how much do you think the Bengals and Buffalo wants a QB. After that you have the Cards and Niners, and finally you have Washington and Minny. Figure maybe McNabb goes to one of them. Cards or Vikes seem most likely, so that those teams can take a skill spot or a defender. Maybe Kolb gets traded, maybe one-two of those teams decides to stand pat. Figure out where you want to jump, then make your move. The way I see it, Cleveland might be a good move. Swap firsts, dump the fourth and maybe a 2-3 next year. Toss them Hartline or maybe a Will Allen as well. That bumps you ahead of San Fran, Washington and Minny. If your guy is sitting there, make the move! It's like a bandaid. Yeah it's going to sting in the short term to lose those picks and/or bodies, but in the long run its best for you. And for the record, we should have taken Ryan lol. Atlanta didn't really have a better line than we did, and they are managing nicely. You don't pass on your QB for any reason. Instead you take your QB and slap a line together. Atlanta did it and St. Louis did it, we could have done it. Your line doesn't need to be an entire all star unit to get you to the playoffs and beyond. No more excuses, no more bargain shopping - identify your QB and get rolling.

You know that we cannot make any trades with players until CBA is passed.... If CBA is not passed by draft then all we can trade is picks for picks, no players.
we only have a few essential pieces to acquire to jump-start the offense: QB, Center, Guard, RB & have the draft & free-agency to work with to get it done. we can go up in the draft from fifteen to whatever to nail the franchise QB
I think Gabbert will be better than Luck. The kid is the real deal. Not saying that Luck will be a bust...
