Yeah but as has been pointed out, Sparano still gets paid. So, it's like still being able to bang your girlfriend after she breaks up with you.

Come on, most of these guys were just warm bodies to fill camp and help turnover the damn rosters from the crap that Cameron and Saban and company left behind. The only guys there really brought here to actually contribute were probably Gibril, and Wilford. The rest of them guys were just basically here on a tryout basis. How the hell can you possibly throw them into a miss category for a GM?? Thats your GM simply doing his job and taking a look at guys who had potential and may be able to contribute. Thats doing his damn job.

    Hey, here's another list:

    Might Be's:
    Chris Clemons
    Rashad Jones
    Nolan Carroll

All three made plays at one or more times this season, somtimes in limited action. Of course, they could've made MORE plays if they could catch the ball (yeah, I'm talking to you Nolan Carroll, he of the dropped game-winning pick 6 against the Browns when I was there!!!).

Jones was always around in special teams down the stretch.

And Clemons was at least in position to make many plays this year.

I want to see more, but there is promise w/ these three.

as much as i appreciate the job Nolan did this year .... not sure how much of it was actually him to be honest ....

less 1 upgrade at LB, our talent on D is pretty damn good -- we SHOULD have been pretty good this year. Can't say that Nolan made Soliai, Davis, Smith, Clemons, Misi, or Wake better than they otherwise would have been this year. And we can add Carroll and Jones to the mix for next year .... and a healthy returning Odrick -- good bunch of players to work with.

point is .... don't think Cowher would bring in a 'bad' DC .... so, what would it really hurt -- UNLESS you would consider firing Sparano and giving Nolan a HC opportunity ... otherwise - eh ....

would like to keep Ireland -- or at least REQUIRE Cowher to have a personnel guy regardless ....

Well, I think you're always going to have more misses than hits because you have to sign so many people to the roster for camp...it's like 80 guys or something that then gets chopped down to 53. Plus how many times does a 4th-7th round pick actually turn into something significant? Maybe once every 3 drafts?

Point is, Ireland has done a great job, but like you said, now he has to get the talent on offense.

My concern would be him losing the team. The longer this goes, the more obvious it becomes that they are trying to find someone better and if they end up retaining him everyone on the team is going to know why. How do you respect a guy that is in the position by default? That's my point. If I were Sparano, at this point I would want to fired so I could collect a paycheck while I look for employment elsewhere.

Nalbone was a late 5th round pick and Donald Thomas was a late 6th round pick. If you want to play that game, then add Chris Clemons, Kendall Langford, and Brian Hartline to the hits. Did Ireland not play a part in bringing in Wake from Canada either?

This is why you have to suspect that Sparano is gone. The organization has to realize this too, especially after all that has transpired over the past 48 hours.

There's no way Ross and Company can be that clueless -- at least I sincerely hope not.

Nah, you're right. Ross has to make a decision by today, no later.

I mean, say - in his mind - he would only replace Tony w/ Cowher or Harbaugh. I can't imagine it would take too long on the phone w/ their agents, or the coaches themselves to figure out if you have a legit shot or not. Let's throw Chuckie in to this mix too, as reportedly, he likes him as well. I'm sure Ross can gleam that info w/in 48 hours (or more, if he's been checking since before Sunday). By today, he should know if he has a legit shot at someone he likes better .... and then he should fire Tony. Or, he should know that nothing is guaranteed at this point, and it's not worth taking the chance ..... therefore Tony is the coach, and you extend him through 2012.

Yes, any longer, and it's getting silly. Cut him down off the rope already!

I'd love to see five of our six picks go offensive, w/ the first four especially going that way. Not to mention the guards that should be available in FA.

    Fair enough

...add another huge miss, I'm sure Pittsburgh would have accepted our fourth our fifth over the Jets fifth for Santonio.

I tend to agree with you, so why the big delay in announcing it? Just let him go. The Jets canned Mangini before they had a replacement. Rex wasn't even a favorite for the job until his interview. But the Jets organization knew that Mangini wasn't the guy for the job, regardless of what else was out there. I think this what Ross needs to do.

Apparently no one thinks Mangini is the guy for the job as the Browns did the same thing to the one time "Mangenius".

As for Sparano, we have no idea what Ross told him yesterday.

I concur. Also keep in mind that in a discussion such as this you must keep in mind the picks used (ie what round). I see success from his part in performing as an NFL GM based on the picks and their respective rounds coupled with the successes and failures.

I agree. Its clear they don't believe in Sparano, so its time to cut bait.

As for why they haven't announced it? Great question.

I'll tell you this though, if the organization brings Sparano back into the fold after what has transpired, they'll be a punchline once again -- and rightfully so.

I read on twitter, don't remember who, that sources close to Cowher said he wants to run all football operations including personel along with 8 million a year. As far as I'm conserned he can take his enflated ego someplace else.

I think that if Ross wanted to hire Cowher. He should allow Cowher to hire all his own assistants and not force him to keep Nolan if Cowher doesn't want to. Also Cowher obviously does not want a GM selecting players for him to coach. He wants total control over player personel decisions and over the coaches on his staff. I see nothing wrong with this request on the part of Cowher. Ross obviously doesn't want to give Cowher this much control. So Cowher is no longer interested in the Dolphins job. With his previous record as a head coach. It is only a matter of time before another team gives Cowher the control he desires. Why Ross thinks keeping Ireland as GM and forcing Cowher to retain Nolan is more important than hiring a proven NFL head coach is beyond me. Personally I think Ross is doing everything he can to keep Sparano. So he is making the requirements for the job difficult for the top name coaches to agree to. This way Ross can say that he interviewed these top name coaches but they were not interested in the job. Ross obviously thinks that just talking to these coaches will satisfy the fan base. With none of the coaches wanting the job. Ross can always say that he found no one better qualified than Sparano for the position. Ross figures we are all dumb enough to believe this BS and that we will continue to purchase season tickets next year. Just because he talked to Cowher, Gruden, Harbaugh, and other coaches regarding the HC position with the Dolphins. Instead of going out and hiring a top quality cocah. Ross prefers to go into next season with a lame duck coach on the final year of his contract. Instead of getting rid of Sparano and Ireland. I think it is time Ross sells the team to someone who is actually interested in bringing a winning team back to Miami. It now appears that the real problem with the Dolphins is not the players or coaches. It's the owner.

Cowher has never been in charge of player personel. To give him that would be a huge mistake. A HC needs to consentrate on coaching. History has proven a HC being in charge of player personel is a bad combination. It rarely works. If this actually took place, Ross made the right decision.

Imo, the reason is because there is an added wrinkle with the uncertainty of the CBA. Sparano knows the players on our team a lot better than anyone coming in. It seems coaches may get only a couple weeks for preparation for the season from what I read. For that reason, they want a guy/their guy on board before getting rid of Sparano. Sucks for Sparano, but it seems this is the case.

Not to take credit here or anything but this is exactly what I said would happen if were went after Cowher. Cowher wants to run the show and have freedom to rule as he sees fit. He's not going to tolerate Parcells or Ireland in his business. Ross would have to be a goofball to even suggest the idea to him.

Cowher is a Superbowl caliber coach and we won't hire him because we like Ireland and Nolan?? This just never ceases to amaze me.

I would bet Jeff Ireland was big in the discussions as well.

I see Chin as someone that will want complete control to come out of retirement.
I don't advocate giving that power to any coach. I don't care who it is.
We have a long and putrid recent history to show what giving any coach complete control gets you.
    Glad we moved on.

It does look like we have an idiot for an owner. I'm liking Ross less & less.
