Exactly. Sparano gets paid either way. Ross owns him.

Why is the league pissed? What do they care as long as the Rooney rule is complied with?

Is there some rule that you can't shop for a coach while still having one employed? If so, there are alot of teams in trouble including the 49ers who pretty clearly had contact with Harbaugh while singletary was the coach

On 790 the ticket now, they are saying "on the verge" not "Done deal." Did LeBatard use those exact words?

Maybe they are going to argue Sparano is a minority? ;) They could pull out the HBO Lombardi special. Lombardi was passed over at Wake Forest (and other institutions) because of his Italian background. He was told, "As long as you have a vowel at the end of your name you will have trouble getting a job").

To John Wooten, “minority” is code word for “black”.

Still can't believe we're giving $8 Mil to a coach with as much NFL coaching experience than I do. Here's to hoping he doesn't get college-sick and pulls a Saban on us.

Don’t panic. The two don’t conflict.

Le Batard’s sources are saying the deal is done because Harbaugh and the Dolphins have agreed on the parameters of a contract. I’m assuming that 790’s news update used the phrasing “on the verge”, and they did that because that’s more accurate: Harbaugh has not signed a contract, Sparano has yet to be fired, and the Rooney Rule has yet to be satisfied.

It’s perfectly fine to tell people Harbaugh is the next coach of the Dolphins.

Not concluding anything from this but this is a Schefter tweet (I think he is desperate to get scoops):

LeBatard said specifically two things: 1) an email source who is extremely reliable said that he has a guy inside Stanford locker room who indicated Harbaugh told the staff that he was going to accept the Miami offer; 2) he has another source who is never wrong who said, "It's all but a done deal."

    It really doesn't matter.

They can't compete financially. They owe McDaniels a ton of money.

And we can't finalize anything today anyways as we have to fire Tony and have a Rooney rule interview. Unless Harbaugh is super psyched about Tebow and is willing to take alot less coin, then denver is no threat. Only SF coming up with a last minute cash surge scares me.

If I remember correctly they reached and agreement and settled so they could be players if Bowlen will give Elway the checkbook.

Once again, anyone on this list would smile at such "unfairness" for the chance at the money he's made the past 3 years and what he'll make from the Dolphins just from sitting on the couch all next year.

And, consistency demands that teams start cutting their players before they sign a free agent if we don't like this.

isnt it weird how a day or 2 espn and sports media were drooling over harbaugh talking about him being the hottest coaching prospect in history and then when the phins swoop in and throw some cash down the whole"he hasnt coached a game yet" **** starts yet it is all right to pay first picks in the draft who havent thrown a pass or played a game 30+ million guaranteed cash?

There is a huge difference between paying a player and paying a coach.

Plus they are fixing over paying rookies soon.

It's important to understand the the Dolphins haven't decided they need to fire a bad coach. They have decided that they have an okay coach by would prefer to get a great one if they can.

There sure is. A coach's salary doesn't count against the salary cap.

It's possible it's true, but Dan Lebatard and someone called "Stugotz" probably aren't going to be the people who break any meaningful information that isn't accompanied by slide whistle and farting sound effects.

Because the coach runs the entire team and the player is a player on the team.

it is a completely different situation. For one you can bench a player, you cannot bench a coach.

you hire a bad coach it can set you back a couple of years, you draft a "franchise player" in the first round and they bust it sets you back at least 5 years and the coach loses his job they go hand in hand

a coach gamble is no different then putting all your chips in the middle for a player

Generally in both cases the team is bad to begin with. Drafting the franchise player hurts mostly due to the salary cap. A good coach could work around that and still produce a good team.

You can draft the best team and still lose if you have a bad head coach.

He nailed Bosh/Wade/LeBron days ahead of time, even before that silly ESPN Free Agent Summit special that was supposed to spoof the rumor that Wade, LeBron, and Bosh had met to decide what they were going to do. He nailed Jon Gruden NOT going to UM at a time when nearly everyone said he was.

Just because he’s best known for “Bam!” and what is basically The Onion of sports talk radio doesn’t mean he’s not credible. He has a track record.
