A little early offseason fun: What would you like to see happen with this O?

Okay, for fun, what would you like to see happen?

Yes, I'd like the Chargers OC, and QB, with Larry Fitzgerald as our #2 and AP running the ball... HAHA! Now, really, what would you like to see happen with our offense?

I would love to see Ronnie come back, Ricky I'm not so sure... We need a couple speedy weapons, one RB, one WR IMO. I still think Henne develops and beats out whoever comes in to battle him.

I want Ricky to be gone, and I want to resign Ronnie (Although, I doubt Ronnie would take a year deal in Miami). Please give us a Mark Ingram or Ryan Williams front office. Please. I also wouldn't mind us letting go of Hilliard and either drafting a guy like Noel Devine later in the draft or signing Darren Sproles. I was against it at first, but I am tired of this boring *** offense. Get in shotgun 35+ times a game with 4 and 5 WR sets and lets spread the ball out. Even if we suck, at least it would be exciting.

    OL

We don't need to upgrade our offensive line as much as people are saying, but we do need a LG. Long-___-Incognito-Jerry-Carey would be fine by me. Hopefully that blank is Mankins. I also still want to keep Berger and have him compete with Incognito for the center job.

    QB

I want to keep Henne and Thigpen, but wee need another guy that could help compete for the backup role. I'm assuming Pennington is done. I like Brandstater and I hope he can compete well to earn a spot on the team next year.

    TE

At TE, Fasano is fine imo right now and is pretty reliable and is a solid blocking TE, but another receiving target would help Henne a lot. DJ Williams would be my dream for the draft, but there are other options out there.

    WR

WR is the main position I want us to focus on this off season. Now that 3 of my favorite receivers (Broyles, Blackmon, and Floyd) announced they are returning to college, I think we have to bank off of free agency (Yes, I am assuming there will be a free agency this year). We need 5 WRs that are worthy of being on the field and 5 WRs that can make plays. We only have 3 right now and when one goes down (like last year with Hartline), we only have 2 WRs worthy of being on the field. If we can get 2 of these WRs, I would be happy:

    Julio Jones
    Ronald Johnson
    Chad Ochocinco
    James Jones
    Santonio Holmes
Steve Breaston (sort of, not really. I just put him here because he would be a huge upgrade over Moore or Wallace)
    Santana Moss (same as Breaston)
    Courtney Roby

Notice how all of them have good speed and/or exceptional athleticism? Again, I want us to move towards a spread offense to at least make things interesting.

    My dream offensive depth chart:

QB- Chad Henne, Tom Brandstater, Tyler Thigpen
RB- Ryan Williams, Ronnie Brown, Darren Sproles, Patrick Cobbs
    FB- Lousaka Polite
WR- Brandon Marshall, Julio Jones, Davone Bess, Brian Hartline, James Jones, Roberto Wallace
TE- Anthony Fasano, DJ Williams, whoever wins the 3rd TE spot
    LT- Jake Long
    LG- Logan Mankins
    C- Joe Berger, Richie Incognito
    RG- John Jerry
    RT- Vernon Carey

That's a lot of money and too many WR's in your post. Someone has to return as well.

I don't see how it would cost that much. We are letting Ricky walk and he was $4.35mil this year. Sproles will probably be around $6mil and Mankins, I would assume would be around $8-9mil give or take. The rest are draft picks and James Jones. I don't see how this would be too much. How is 6 WRs too much? The Chargers had 6 WRs on their depth chart this year.

Find a way in FA or trade to get a QB that can play well without giving up too much in returen. (Palmer, Orton, Kolb, Young, McNabb, Hasselbeck, etc.) and draft one in the middle rounds who can become a project.

Try to trade down and get a 2nd round pick and use those first 2 picks for a running back with speed and an offensive lineman. Also would try to upgrade these 2 positions via FA (Bradshaw, D. Williams, Bush, Mankins, Nicks, etc.)

Basically with FA and the first few rounds of the draft, I want 2 RB's and 2 O-Linemen.

Add some speedy depth at WR and TE and we're good to go.

I'd love to get Mark Ingram! That would be awesome! I'd still have a hard time saying so long to Ronnie though. So long Hilliard, maybe keep Cobbs.

I don't know what people see in Vince Young, but I don't think he would beat out Henne, McNabb either. As a matter of fact, I say he beats out whoever they bring in. Thigpen is another bust like Sage Rosenfels... At first he looks like he has the tools but then in the game he has a few good plays and a LOT of bad ones.

I agree with most of what finsbuck said. More speed, more play makers, and a LG. If we want to catch up to the Jets/Pats, our lineup needs to look something like this:

    QB
    1. Chad Henne
    2. Tyler Thigpen (I assume he'd like to move on and get a starting gig, I doubt he'll find one though)
    3. Tom Brandstater

    RB
    1. Cedric Benson (Younger/quicker/faster/more durable than Ronnie, but he fumbles more)
    2. Ryan Williams (Kid outta VTech, good speed/explosiveness, what we've lacked for years)
    3. Noel Devine (Speed, speed, more speed. Can return KOs/ and create matchup problems anywhere he lines up)
    4. Pat Cobbs/Lex Hilliard (Cant upgrade everyone at once)+
    5. Lousaka Polite (He's overpriced, but hopefully he'll bounce back to 2009 form)

    WR
    1. Brandon Marshall
    2. Santonio Holmes (Ideal #2. Can stretch field, create space for Marshall, and eat well vs single coverage)
    3. Brian Hartline
    4. Brad Smith (KR, Decent depth WR, runs WC, takes him away from NY)
    5. Davonne Bess

    TE
    1. Anthony Fasano
    2. DJ Williams
    3. Dedric Epps

    OL
    LT Jake Long
LG Mike Pouncey (Mankins is tempting, but Long/Carey make 18million already, adding another 8-10 million is too much on OL, IMO)
    C Richie Incognito
    RG John Jerry
    RT Vernon Carey
    OL Joe Berger
    OL Nate Garner
    OL Pat McQuistan
    OL Mid round G/T prospect

This list assumes a trade down from #15, then Pouncey in R1 then Ryan Williams-Devine- DJ Williams. Didnt go WR in the draft b/c IMO we need proven guys there, not maybes. RB is a much easier transition from college, so I went RB in the draft, WR in FA, assuming there is a FA this year. With this group we can attack defenses in just about every way imaginable.

At RB- Power running with Benson. Edge running with Devine. Williams can give you a combo of both inside and outside. All three can catch the ball effectively. Devine is a nightmare in coverage for most NFL LBs. Line him up outside, with a WR in the slot, the defense is forced to declare man/zone, which makes Henne's job easier. Williams is a great receiver out of the backfield, he can take a check down and do something with it, unlike anything we've seen the last couple years. Most importantly, all 3 guys can turn good blocking into a double digit gain, or great blocking into a 20-40+ yd gain. Again, we haven't seen that around here in a loooong time.

At WR- Adding Holmes will help Marshall tremendously. No more cover doubling BM and Cover 2ing us to death. Holmes can destroy single coverage if he gets it consistently, teams will have to pick their poison instead of just living with a few short completions to Hartline as was the case this year. The 4/5 WR set now becomes an option with BM-Holmes-Hartline-Bess-Smith. Henne seems to play better in spread looks, where its easier to decipher coverage. The spread invites teams to blitz, but Henne seems to best is best ball vs blitz-man looks, its soft coverages that he seems to struggle with. Brad Smith can help us out in the WC option game, as well as return kicks (Devine can as well). I see the return of the Jet sweep with Devine coming around in motion, how many LBs are going to beat him to the edge, huh? Bring your safety down to play Devine, Smith keeps it, and if he can find a crease, its a 12-20 yd gain, at least. Oh, and Smith adds a legit passing threat to the WC, something we've never had.

Basically, adding these guys means the end of our 3 yds and a round of boos offense. We'll be able to attack, we can be unpredictable, make big plays, take the pressure off of the QB to be uber precise, and give our defense some points to work with for a change. Last year we fixed the D, now its the O's turn.

    In my perfect offseason:

-Brian Hartline and Phil Merling along with a #3 to Denver for:

    -DJ Williams
    -Eddie Royal
    -Kyle Orton

Deal Bess for a #3 and take a LG with the #15 or trade back and take a LG later in the draft and recoup the #3 or a #2

    We'd wind up with

    -new starting ILB
    -new faster slot Wr
    -new starting Qb
    -new starting LG

Then we would need a running back or three

Wow. If John Elway does that trade, he's a double agent. A Pro Bowl LB, starting QB, and starting WR for a couple backups and a 3rd round pick? Oh yeah, that'd be more than perfect...

All of those players have flaws:

DJ Williams is going to make 4.25 million and was charged with his second DWI in 5yrs
Royal no longer fits what they do, as the Rotoworld article suggests
Orton is wishful thinking on my part, the thread title did not say "no wishful thinking allowed".

Royal is also one heck of a Returner.

    More speed at WR

    Athletic TE

More speed and athletic ability on the oline, our guys getting down field or blocking for screens is painful to watch.

    Young fast nimble rb

QB who isn't afraid to take chances, stretches the field and leads the team.

Well, Merling had a domestic battery charge and Hartline (apparently) left the scene of an accident, so our guys have issues too. But I'm not knocking the trade Pad, I think it'd be the best trade in Fins history TBH.

Yeah, I am getting to the point where if Julio doesn't fall to us, I want us to trade back in the 1st and pick up a 2nd. If Julio does fall to us, I want to take him and do everything we can to get a 2nd round pick this year, while keeping our 3rd and 4th this year. Even if that means trading a future 1st. This draft is loaded with talent in the first few rounds and we don't have a million needs at this point, especially with how many potential free agents are out there. This HAS to be our year.

Can't see both Julio and Ryan in any realistic scenario. Both move higher b/c of several unexpected drop outs from the draft - Blackmon, Luck, etc. Next to impossible. We'd have to trade again to the bottom of the round, score a high 2nd (assuming someone has that and wants to trade) and hope both players drop.

I see the primary needs as QB, RB, C/OG (if we settle on Incognito at Center - then need another OG; if not, need a C), RT, ILB, WR, and another TE to come on board and compete with Fasano. Only 7 slots to fill!

And, with no 2nd round pick, it is going to be next to impossible to fill these needs.

If we were able to land a QB in free agency or via trade (without trading draft picks), then the draft would go one way. If not perhaps the other. These are "wish dreams" of course, and one has to hope for some luck (which the Dolphins have had very little of the past two decades).

    Scenario 1:
    1) QB's potentially available: McNabb, Young, Orton, Palmer (very unlikely). Young likely will be released and will come at the lowest cost, imo. But, he's also a high risk and questionable. McNabb is aging and if he relies on his passing ability - he's not a great candidate (Now if we land Childress at OC, I could see McNabb coming here to work under that system). Still, I've never liked McNabb's inconsistent throwing - one throw good, next in the dirt. Just inconsistent and inaccurate (look at his %'s - not that great). He too has always seemed to be a problem at some point. Orton? Well, I suspect Denver will want a #2. I don't see us having much to offer on that front. No way do I trade away any more picks - that's fools gold. Palmer - I think that ship has sailed.

    - Of the veterans, I'd bring in Vince Young (know that's not a popular pick) - if we are looking for QB competition. I think if he is willing to work the 14-16 hr days - he'd be much improved. But, if we don't think he is and his motivation is not there, then I don't really like the QB options.

    Scenario 2:
    2) Draft QB high. Obviously, if Gabbert were to fall to us - you take him and run away happy. That would be a gift from the football gods. Highly unlikely. More likely possibility, Cam Newton. I think the comparisons to Young fall apart on these counts: a) Newton is a much better passer - completes a higher % for more YPP (10.2) than Young did - great arm. b) Better motion and release; c) Bigger & more durable (Big Ben frame); d) Equal as a runner/scrambler; e) I think his head is much more into football than the brooding Young. People at Auburn loved his work ethic and passion for the game. Even at this, it would be very good fortune for Newton to be there at #15. I think he'll go in the 8-15 range - so I think we are on the outlier range for where Newton will go. If he's there, draft him.

    Interesting tweet from Buccigross:

At this point, we still need help in multiple places. I'd could see a RB in the 3rd. I don't want Ronnie or Ricky to return. Maybe Ronnie but I think he's just lost a step. Ricky's done. RB could be had in the later rounds (esp. if we go in the 4th or 5th), however, so I'd go OL (OC or OG or RT) or ILB in the 3rd/4th round area.

    Scenario 3:
Trade down in round 1 - to the end of the round - and try to pick up a 2nd round pick. Challenge here is this: looking over the bottom of the round, none of those teams (as with last year) have a high 2nd or extra 2nd round pick. The Pats do, but that's basically out for them. No reason to trade with us. The other teams that might pull the trigger for us to move down significantly (which is what it would take to get a 2nd round pick) all have only one 2nd round pick and are near the end of that round - I doubt they'd really give up a 1st and a 2nd to move up that far. San Diego has an extra pick in round 2, but they are already at #18.

Possible we could trade players - but the players we'd want to trade away are injured, had bad seasons, or hold little value to the NFL. Those who have any value are guys we need to keep and would want to. Wow, I've just talked myself into a bad situation this off-season.

If, somehow, we were to pull off a trade to move down for extra picks, I'd go OL in round 1. Preferably RT as I think we need fresh blood there. Just don't see Carey as reliable any more. And, his poor physical work ethic (failing to stay in top shape) is not a healthy thing for the line, imo. I want a work ethic, young RT. Then bring in some big interior guys via UFAs or later round picks. In round 2 I'd go WR or RB. Round 3 ILB. Round 4, opposite of what I did in round 2 - RB or WR (given the way RB's can move in to the line up - I'd lean WR round 2 and RB round 4 - but talent availability is the factor). In round 4 or 5 I'd look for UNC QB T.J. Yates. CK's mention of him and a review of some of his games and highlights brought him to mind. Love the way he throws. Very good mechanics, good athleticism. I think he'd compete with and possibly beat out Henne.

didn't realize the Cedric was a year younger than Ronnie .... i'd take a flier on him .... but i do like the idea of using Ronnie as a playmaker in the open field vs a RB.

i've stated a few times to bring in Dixon and Hansen to compete for back-up QB along with Brandstater

Nicks or Mankins for G .... not sold on Jerry, but we do have Garner coming back - and i do buy into Incognito moving to C

Murtha has a year to try and get ready to push for RT .... otherwise we need to draft another T (early or late depending on Myrtha)

I'm looking forward to seeing Odrick, Edds and Garner back fully recovered in a few months ! Amaya and Carroll now have a year under their belts along with Jones .... D looks very, very promising for the long term if we can just tweak the LB corps.

Draft priorities: SPEEDY Playmaker (multi-facited RB/WR), RB/ Speedy WR, TE (pending development assessment of Shuler and Epps), C/G (to challenge Incognito, Berger, Jerry), T (to challenge Murtha/Carey).

Murtha and Jerry aren't where they need to be .... Jerry didn't even reach Thomas' level to date - has a ways to go .... the catch is IF Incognito moves to C, then we have 2 holes at G to fill ..... keeping Berger as a back-up, Garner probably earning 1 spot - and hopefully, signing 1 of the 2 top FAs ... or Jerry just busts his arse and shows up ready to go ..... though, i still think Garner can beat him out ... if not, Garner is a great swing man.

Wallace and Moore need to call up Jerry Rice and rent him for a few months this offseason ...

Bottom Line is that we can fix the OL with little effort, by signing either Mankins or Nicks ..... and moving Incognito to C ..... then it really becomes a focus to bring in a couple speedy playmakers and tweak the LB corps and this team is immediately much improved.

Well, do consider GMJ that whomever we acquire to be a Qb has to be ready to start from Day #1, there has to be a competition in Training Camp where Henne is the #2 guy and must be out the #1 Qb to be the starting Qb.

    Orton fits that bill.

    BTW:

5 QB's in the first 12 picks are a possibility, basically that means our #15 is a #9 for every other position besides Qb.

I've also heard that 16 Dlinemen will carry a first round grade this yr, which also means our #15 is quite a valuable commodity for a team that really wants a pass rushing prospect.

Well, TBH VT..imho pre Combine Ryan Williams is a late 3rd rd type of pick simply due to injuries this yr.

Which BTW, is where Curtis Martin slid to after he had the same issues..he would be a steal imho.

need to fix our third rate offensive line (Center & Guard) & find the franchise QB, keep Williams, then draft a late round running back with good speed. not so very complicated, unless your head coach is an idiot

The first thing I do is pay attention to the defense and sign Solai and Mcd, and extend Cam Wake...Priority#1.

Priority #2..do everything possible to move some players and recoup that 2nd round pick..Whats sad is we dont have a player that could be available that would warrant a 2nd round pick...Merling/Crowder/ for a 2 maybe.

Priority #3...Study all QB's..and Aquire 2 of them..

Priority #4..Study the 2nd tier QB's even more because of the Mark Ingram man crush.

Ive noticed that Blaine Gabbert is not very patient in the pocket and locks onto his receivers..I've also noticed that Pat Devlin's feet actually become still before release, almost every time {ala tom brady}, totally comfortable in a chaotic pocket and accurate ..I love the way Tj.Yates and Andy Dalton play the position with a high level of QB athleticism. Then can execute any play design with grace and execution, they both have escapability athleticism, can extend play's, and both have solid form, mechanics and release.
