Well, first things first though RR, Daboll will have to ink the deal, fly to Miami, settle in, and study the offense and see whom he likes, and whom he does not feel he can work with, then we can move forward with retaining or letting walk offensive players.

This may surprise people, but the spread/no huddle/hurry up suits Henne's skillset, maybe Thiggy as well, but I'd like to think Daboll has the final call on that one.

A good number of fans really wanted McDaniels here and Daboll sounds like a Josh McDaniels minus the jerk factor.

I had read one of the reasons why Mike Nolan could get his defense up to speed quickly was supposedly Sparano asked him to keep the defense's existing terminology. I am hoping this is the case with Daboll for the offense.

Oh I agree Pads, but Im
gonna laugh my *** off at all the wailing being done when people start to realize they knew nothing about the guy, based all of their angst on his Cleveland stats, and find out we actually will have a prettu exciting and creative offense next season

No, not a moderator or an administrator. Just a long time member who has seen the boards decline rapidly over the past few months. I'm not trying to bust anyone's balls so please never take it that way. I'm just trying to do my part as a faithful member here to keep the boards a enjoyable place for everyone. Whatever side of the Henne argument you fall on, you must admit that those arguments, usually started with an inflammatory comment like the one I quoted, always degenerate into needless negativity, spamming, trolling, name calling, etc. Same thing happens all the time with a player. Whether it was Ginn, Cammarillo, Pat White, etc. The point is, nine times out of ten nothing good ever comes out of these things. It becomes a pissing match between the two sides who are not willing to give any ground to the other. I myself have been guilty of it in the past. And honestly, as I've seen over the past few months these Henne bashers/defenders have a tendency to let it spill over into EVERY SINGLE THREAD. And it's just not necessary, it clutters the boards, hijacks threads, etc. Since X-Pac is a new member, I believe it's his first day, I was just trying to let him know to stay on topic in threads. Again, not a mod or an admin. Just a long time member trying to prevent against some of the chaos of this very young offseason and keep the place an enjoyable forum. Sorry if I offended your or X-Pac or anyone else.

No way we make this hire unless its true that we are going to try and turn our offense into a hybrid Patriots offense. Not sure why this hasn't been done sooner, other than having Henning at OC. I hope we get it done, I think we have more talent everywhere on our offense other than QB than the Pats do.

I'll be happy to have panicked too soon. Only problem is, we don't have 5 WR good enough to be on the field, nor do we have 2 decent TE.
Looks like we'll be going offense heavy in FA and the draft.

No it isnt what it is. Clean the crap up or go back to the other board. You or anyone else wants to stay here you will treat others with some degree of respect. Not everyone is going to agree on everything but acting like a hardass isnt going to keep you around very long.

Daboll runs a combo of the spread and the Earhart-Perkins offense. Its anything but a conservative offense but it relies on YAC which means you need playmakers. Look at Clevelands roster and let me know when you find one.

First, hope you get well soon.

Different views are fine. I think the people who have been posting with me on various boards over the last 7-8 years will tell you I rarely agree with the masses. Its not a question of agreeing or disagreeing, its how you do it. You want to prove someone wrong do it with facts not authoritative or nasty posts. Dissension creates discussion, its a necessity of any good message board or else we'd all be bored as heck. I am hopped up on sinus meds but controlling your emotions and words is an entirely different thing. Please show respect for others. Thats all we ask. You have an opinion as do I, and the next guy. Treat people how you want to be treated bro.

Ive already said, if he comes in and installs what he ran in Cleveland, its an awful hiring. My buddy said he runs spread sometimes...and maybe he didnt do better because of no playmakers on O, I give that. But from one we know, this second, it doesnt look like a good hiring.

I dont agree with that at all bro. You can run the greatest system in the world but you need players to make it work. You acknowledge the lack of players so what do you or anyone else expect?

You know how I feel about WR's in round one but would it really surprise anyone if we went with some kind of receiving target either TE or WR?

this is the one year where it wouldnt bother me drafting a WR. This draft is loadded with receivers. it would almost be a crime not to draft one or two

    I like the hire.

    1. The Pats and the Jets are the teams to beat in the AFC. Daboll has spent time with both.

    2. He was with the Pats all three years they won the Super Bowl, so he has seen how it gets done.

    3. Deion Branch was the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIX. Daboll was his position coach.

    4. He learned from the likes of Belichick, Weis, McDaniels, Mangini, Holmgren, Schottenheimer, Saban, Brady, and Favre.

Really the only knock against him is the fact that Cleveland's offense has sucked the last two years. But look at their QB situation. Derek Anderson went to Arizona. He sucked. Brady Quinn went to Denver. He sucked. Jake Delhomme sucked so bad he was cut by the Panthers. And Colt McCoy is an undersized rookie.

Plus they traded away their top wideout (Braylon Edwards) and their top tight end (Kellen Winslow). To say the deck was stacked against Daboll in Cleveland is an understatement.

What do we have here? lol

edit: also, another point is, almost anyone can look like a great OC with great talent, its OCs that get production out of not much, that show how good they are as OCs, something Daboll has yet to do

True or false: Marshall, Bess and Hartline are better then anything on the cleveland roster? Maybe you could make an argument for massaquoi but considering hes the lone target nothing hes done really is that impressive :)

They are better no doubt. But as a whole are we that much better to go from bottom 3 in the league to middle of the pack? they had a better OL, running game, TE, and one could say they had better QB play when Colt McCoy was in there...So what im saying is, because we have one of 2 better wideouts, we are going to make a huge jump?

Man I just look at New England's offense and drool. The fact the Daboll played a part in that has got me excited. Think about it... Sparano can turn to Daboll and ask, "How did the Super Bowl champs of 2003 handle this?" Or "How did the Super Bowl champs of 2004 handle that?"

to me the hope is he can get henne to play better. i'm all for more four wide or five wide receiver sets as long as henne can handle it. i hope we dont run too many wr screens though since thats a play that was more effective three years ago. defenses pretty much shut that play down on a regular basis now. to me i would like to see if he can get crossing routes to work here. its a big if since they are dangerous and i dont completely trust henne throwing over the middle yet. i hope he keeps us as a run first team though since i think thats our personality and i dont want to be a pass happy team unless we have peyton manning throwing the ball

Just to play devil's advocate. Here are the Top 10 offenses this season:

    New England Patriots
    San Diego Chargers
    Philadelphia Eagles
    Indianapolis Colts
    Atlanta Falcons
    New York Giants
    Houston Texans
    Green Bay Packers
    New Orleans Saints
    Pittsburgh Steelers

None of those teams are lacking for talent. Or a QB for that matter. I think you would be hard-pressed to name an OC who put together a Top 10 offense with sub-par talent. Agreed?

We are not going to make a huge jump with Henne as our QB. Not unless he can eliminate the interceptions and improve his accuracy.

Draft a center and I like our OL. Long is a stud, Jerry was a rookie, and Carey is better than most. Plus we get Garner back next season. I would not be surprised if he takes the starting job away from Incognito.

    Fasano is very underrated.

Still scratching my head over our ineffective running game. But the o-line is not always to blame. The fullback and the tight end have blocking assignments as well.

Well theres a couple of problems with that argument...one is that Colt McCoy is better suited for a WCO so thats what they ran at times which is not Daboll's area of expertise. Well, you have to figure more talent will be added at the skill spots. The consistency of the running game was just as big an issue for us as the passing game..getting that going alone would help us jump 5-7 spots minimum. Both RW and RB are not consistent at all, in part because their carries and usage varied so drastically. I wouldnt say they had a better OL at all, Id say our backs were really that bad. TE is about even..watson and fasano...neither one is much of a bargain. McCoy was totally miscast in that offense though.

I would be very surprised if Henne was our starting QB next season.

With Ronnie and Ricky we should have been a run first offense. But we were not. Now it looks like Ricky might not be back so I'm not sure that should be our identity on offense going forward.

His only saving grace right now is our situation in not being able to lure more highly touted coaches and the talent level in Cleveland.

That being said, he is young and it does leave the door open for him to improve.

However, there's not much at this point in time that I can see to be excited about since right now all I see in front of us is a very average OC coupled with very average personel (at this point).

When you look at the stats, you cant help but wonder as well if he didnt go for more yards through the air because he didnt have a QB or was it because he likes Hennings style and wants to run it and keep things short. Could be both.

We'll see what happens. I think this move was also predicated more so because his style doesnt rock the boat too much and with Sparano being scared to death that a total renovation will definitely sink his ship, he wanted to just make a slight course alteration rather than change course altogether.

Ireland and Sparano are looking at the 7-9 record more than anything fellas. I seriously think that they honestly didnt see much wrong with us this season except for a few bad breaks and believe that they are just a player or two away from the SB.

Really, what was the point of extending Sparano's contract. They probably could have gotten Daboll in a lame duck season.

Marshall, Bess, and Hart are 3 solid guys to build a spread around if we add a few playmakers to the mix. Jerrel Jernigan, Greg Little, and Titus Young are my top 3 preferences and I'd take all of them if I could.

I really like WR Matthew Szczur (Villanova) as a 4th round pick up. 5'10 1/2, 205 with 4.4 speed, great short area quickness and tough for his size (very much a Wes Welker type only bigger) and he's going to the Senior Bowl.

Trading back in the 1st and grabbing Torrey Smith (Maryland) could be a dark horse option.

No he's not super inspiring, but honestly who out there was? There really wasn't a Cam Cameron, Scott Linehan or Mike Martz floating around this year. Yeah some might say an older name like Al Saunders, but who knows what kind of interest he may have had in coming back full time.

And how far are we really? Teams go from the bottom to the top every year, hell we did it ourselves. We were in the solid middle of the league this last year. I don't think it's too far fetched to believe a few pieces can push us back up into competitors.

His stats are kind of misleading though because you had a rookie QB there and Pick 6 Delhomme. Thats actually worse then Chad Henne.

Like I posted in Club, there is certainly a lot of work to be done but we easily could have been a respectable 11-5 when you factor in losses to Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland late in the year and the fact we got robbed during the Steeler game. When you look at our games vs winning teams, thats where you see the biggest discrepancy that leaves little doubt we have our work cut out for us.

Tthe formula vs us is simple...good QB play and good defense beats us because you arent running on us and we cant throw vs you consistently.

    Again, consider our losses:
    Pitt 23-22
    Baltimore 26-10
    NE x 2 41-14 and 38-7
    Chicago 16-0
    NYJ 31-23

Gave up 175 points (29PPG) and scored only 75 (12.5PPG). So vs the best teams that we lost two we were awful and for the most part outplayed severely. Those teams for the most part beat us at our own game and beat us up. They threw us around the field and threw the ball around the field as well and we couldnt respond.

The winning teams we did beat:
    GB 23-20
    NYJ 10-6
    Oakland 33-17
We scored 66 points (22PPG) and allowed 14.3PPG (43 overall). GB was banged up and playing like crap at that point. Oakland cant beat any team outside the division really and the Jets..well we just love to beat them I guess.

And then crappy teams that just played with more heart and effort like Detroit, Buffalo and Cleveland. We easily could have been 10-6. But to take the next step...wow do we have work to do. It starts at QB but OL, RB, deep threat at WR, TE, and upgrades at ILB, OLB, and safety play have to be made if we are gonna take that jump. The corners (Both Davis and Smith) have to also be a lot more consistent. I think Daboll will help. He was NE's WR coach for 3 of their SB wins and his WR's flourished under him. Pennington has credited Daboll with teaching him how to effectively read defenses. There's a lot of good in this hire I think.
