"Ran into Lions RB Kevin Smith during my morning workout. He's a restricted free agent and told me to tell the Dolphins: "Come get me."

How will Kevin Smith fit in our offense and who will he replace? Ricky or Ronnie?

I think he'd be a decent backup guy and should come fairly cheap. Something to consider especially if we go RB in the draft.

He would be a great pick-up for this team. He's definitely a guy that has a lot to offer even though he's been injured a lot. In 35 games he's accumulated over 2600 yards. He adds a dimension we haven't had in a long time as a receiver out of the backfield (91 for 824.) And he's put these numbers up in what has been an often times anemic offense in Detroit behind a shoddy o-line and with shaky QB play. I would absolutely love to see this guy in a Dolphins uniform next season. Unfortunately I can't see us giving up anything to detroit to compensate for the RFA tag. Now, if Detroit decides not to tender him, or if something changes with the CBA that you only need 3 years to acquire UFA status, maybe we'll end up with him. But I wouldn't hold your breath.

Also factor in Jahvid Best having some injury problems this past year and you could see Detroit wanting to keep him as a safety plan. Still I don't see how they could ask too much but even then risking anything but a very late round pick wouldn't make sense.

Well, it's not so much a matter of what they ask for as much as it is what they tender him at. The tender amount is based on the value of the contract offered. Now, I don't have the exact figures in front of me, and they'll be changing with the new CBA anyway most likely, so it's pointless to speculate on that right now. However, you do raise an interesting point. I've watched every Lions game for the better part of the past 5 years. They're my favorite team in the NFC. I know, I'm a glutton for punishment. In Best's first three games he was explosive, but that turf toe injury hampered him all season. And for some RBs that injury can hamper them for several seasons, even for the rest of their career. Personally, if I was running the ship in Detroit I would put the second round tender on him. Not because you think you'll get that in return, but because he is that valuable to the team. I know he wants to start somewhere, and believe me he will get his shot again to be a starter in the NFL, but I think it will be after next season when he becomes an unrestricted free agent. You can't hold talent like his down for long, which sadly means you can't keep it in Detroit.

Kevin was great at UCF his last year here, but really hasn't done anything in teh NFL that would warrant a pick being used on him. If anything, he will become a F/A and still would get minimal offers.

He's not a big play back, which is what we really need. So I doubt he would be an option anyways

I've liked Kevin Smith for a while. As a rookie, I had him in Fantasy football so I followed him and watched games. 2009 was a bad year due to injury and Best came in lighting it up in 2010. He's a great receiver and pretty quick. A versatile guy like him would be good to have in the mold of Chester Taylor. We'd absolutely need another back though. Sort of like Pitt or Balt where they have situational backs. Maybe Mark Ingraham.

Then after getting hounded on Twitter about it, Smith tweeted that he is still under contract with the Lions and is focusing on his rehab. Methinks the Lions weren't too pleased.

If he was a UFA I would be all for it.
But I wouldn't give up a pick for him, especially with the the value you can find in the draft at RB.

He's got the same problem as Ronnie Brown. He's too injury prone, we don't need too see this same song and dance all over again. Sign Ahmad Bradshaw.

I like him, but he's a back up RB at best. I think Hillard is better, has been patient and should get his much deserved play time.

So... we're pretty sure Ricky won't be back after his comments, Ronnie gets bashed alot here for "dancing" and being injured, and we want to talk about bringing Kevin Smith here? Hell, has this guy EVER completed a full season in the NFL? Actually, he has, ONCE in 2008. Grrrrreat...

I dont see Kevin doing anything other than giving us more of what we had all last year (a lack of playmaking ability). I'd rather have Mike Tolbert as a #2 TBH.

If he came to Miami (and I said if) he'd be in a supporting role to Lex Hillard I am sure. He wouldn't / couldn't be an every down back.

Part of our problem is that we bring in other teams', especially Dallas', backups hoping they will go to the next level and start for us, and instead we find out why they were backups.

What is with this Lex Hilliard ****? He's not a good RB. I mean really, what has Lex Hilliard shown? As BAD as R&R were last year, Lex Hilliard didn't even get the chance to do anything. He's not a starting caliber RB. And I love on one hand, people bash Kevin Smith who I've watched and is a great RB and receiver as not being a home run hitter, then say, LETS START HILLIARD. The man crushes need to end. Kevin Smith is a MUCH better player than Lex Hilliard. And as for full healthy seasons, Kevin Smith has been in the league three years, played in 37 of 48 games and lost a spot to Jahvid Best.

He'd be coming here as a backup but make no mistake, He'd be ahead of Lex Hilliard on the Depth Chart.

I think everyone misunderstood what I was saying.

The reason Lex hasn't started was due to the depth at the position. Ricky, Ronnie and Cobbs were all here when he got drafted so it only stands to reason that he'd be behind them in the line up. If you remember the huge depth at the RB position lead to us also cut Jalen Parmalee. Lex's benching was not due to a lack of talent but a glut of overall RB talent.

With R&R probably gone Lex will be running the ball (Cobbs is a specialty back). Kevin Smith has more primary experience at RB, and he'd be a welcome addition but Lex knows our system better, this would put Smith behind Lex in our system initially.

Everyone needs to relax out there.

If Lex Hilliard is even on this team next year. He won't start. That's not how the RB position works when you have a terrible player like Lex Hilliard. If Lex was any good, he'd have played last year. As it stands, he had more snaps at FB than RB.

I think Hillard has potential that is untapped and the coaches must feel the same way as he has worked his way off the practice squad and onto the regular roster. When he has played he hasn't looked too bad. He'll be here next year because he can be a back up at both the RB and the FB position. I hope he gets his fair chance at competing for a starting position if R & R go.

That is a very good point in light of all of the coaching changes on this team. I hope both Lex Hillard and Korry Sheets step up this year and make a positive difference. It will be interesting to see who we add to the roster via both the draft and the FA market. I really don't care who runs the ball as long as we can run it well.

"Lex Hilliard and Kory Sheets will definitely be back at running back. Hilliard may finally get a chance to prove himself after spending three years almost exclusively as a special teamer. One among Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams may return – I’d bet on Ricky. No mention was made of Patrick Cobbs, which I found interesting because he was a valuable special teams player and versatile member of the offense, and the coaching staff loves him."

At the end of last year when Ronnie and Cobbs were both hurt and Ricky and Lex were playing RB I saw nothing from Lex Hilliard to make me feel confident in him as my starting running back. I'm not saying anyone else's opinion is wrong, but he just didn't pass the eye test for me. He had a strong OL to run behind and he just couldn't seem to find the holes, didn't have much burst that I saw, and wasn't physical enough when taking on blockers. Starting a running back with poor field vision who can't break away and can't run anyone over is going to get us to the Super Bowl?

Nobody said Smith is the best RB. I'm just asking you what makes you think Lex has potential. I'm saying based on stats and watching Smith play, he is better than Lex. Stop BSing then crying when someone asks you a question that you can't answer. You'll look smarter that way.
