For me, what we do with Carey means everything on what we do in the draft and FA. Do we belive he will come back to be a top ten RT? Will we move him inside and look for a RT in the draft? Does he have the speed to pull as a G? Will we move him, and create another need? Opinions?
Carey will be at RT IMO. He's not a good fit at G, and moving just creates another hole that we'd have to fill. If there's a mid round prospect we like, no problem w/ grabbing him as an eventual replacement. But I dont see us moving him to G or eating the 7 million itd cost to be rid of him, so lets just hope he shows up in shape and ready to play.
Carey is a keeper. But the coaches need to emphasize he get his fat *** in shape. His best year by far was 2006 when he came into camp in excellent condition. I think the coaching staff wanted him to bloat up since he was moved to RT for running plays when Long was drafted. Carrying that excess weight is what led to him having knee problems this year imo.
i have a seriously hard time believing that the coaching staff wanted him to gain weight .... but assuming Vernon is here for the season - it will be at RT, because we don't have someone to fill in yet to trade him. what we will not do is cut him -- no way on that one, as much as it seems to some that i don't like or appreciate Vernon - we would be stupid to cut him.
Carey looks like he's not far away from having a fork stuck in him..... his back is about shot. This is probably his last season with us...
He's a very good RT provided he keeps his weight down. I think that was the cause of many of his injury problems from last year. That said, I wouldn't be opposed to trying to move him if it means more draft picks.
If you're going to give an unqualified medical prognosis, you think you'd at least do one that falls in line with an injury he had this year? How is his back shot when his knee was what was on the injury reports the entire season and got him on IR?
Would you like an appointment? I think I could fix your problem too.. You can tell by the way gets up off the ground and can't seem to get straightened up as he walks to the huddle..... and I was giving my opinion. Which is what the OP asked for........ppl's opinions on Carey. If you're gonna stalk me, do a better job
He should be back, and if he can get 100 percent healthy he CAN play RT again but I would move him inside to RG. He can be a probowl Guard. Absolutely keep him.
His overall performance, his lack of care for his body relative to his sport, has left me not caring what the hell happens to him... bottom line, Iam shoppin him this offseason.
I'd love to see them get their hands on one prospect and that's Ben Ijalana. I just don't see them taking a lineman in the 1st and if he lasts til the 3rd, he'd be a solid get.
My opinion: We already have enough holes to fill this offseason without creating another one by cutting Carey.
He is due a big raise next year and as far as I am concerned, he is not worth it. Unfortunately with all the needs on offense, the Dolphins will probably bite the bullet for one more year and pay him. Of course if the Dolphins feel they can get another right tackle in the draft or free agency who can play better than Carey has in recent years. I would have no problem with him being cut. Since he signed his big contract a few years ago. He has not played very well and I thought his over all play was terrible last year, even before he when injured.
He was bad while injured though. Carey has been a damned good Tackle every single season and getting rid of him just opens up another position to be filled.
We need enough O linemen replaced as is but I just don't know if Carey is physically fit enough to make it thru a full season.... If he does start, I hope we have a good back up plan
Oz, I understand not wanting another hole, but the way that man is headed iam not sure if he can last another year at this pace..the lack of attention to his body is catching up, and if there is any value left in him I would just dangle and see.
Phins didn't invest a roster spot in Lydon Murtha to have him sit while a damage Carey continues to stink the joint.
Well, I'd say much depends on what shape he is in physically, he had: -Turf toe, worse than YBell's -Sprained MCL And those are the injuries we know about, they shut him down early to try and avoid a surgical procedure for Big Vern, if he comes back healthy, and imho drops maybe 20 pds, no reason not to keep him, however if he cannot recover what else can be done with him?
I would most definitely agree with you guys if it not for the lack of draft picks, and with Free Agency looking like it will come after the draft, if at all. The line surely needs fixing but when healthy, and he does have an entire year to get there, I think Carey should be the least of the problems on the offense.
I would pick up lineman for sure at some point but with no signed running backs worth a darn and with a need for some speed, and the need for something exciting to sell tickets, I just don't see a 1st round pick being a lineman.
Wow, persecution complex much? You're giving a medical opinion, which you are totally unqualified to make. Claiming him getting up off the ground a certain way is indicative of a career-threatening back injury is about as good as the time I heard someone say you could tell how smart a certain player was by how fast the spoke.
It's bizarre to see the Vernon Carey is dangerously overweight thing catch on as an article of faith when we know for a fact that Carey has weight clauses in his contract and the front office hasn't been shy in discipling players that violated their weight clauses(Paul Soliai most notably). He's not significantly bigger than he's been in his entire pro career. Take a look. He's fat, but so are many top NFL Tackles. Does anyone have any idea here what Damion Woody actually looks like?
Well I do not think he is particularly overweight, I do think as a player ages they should drop weight to try and keep the same level of performance.
Yeah, he's been a big dude all his life. I think he needs to get into a little better shape though. No matter how he has to or if he has to work just a little harder at it. Injuries surely hurt him this year but it hurt his play big time...
You're a blatant smartass who's main objective on these forums is to be a blatant smartass and show ppl up..........you don't offer a damn thing other than trying to stroke your own ego. You've been warned how many times to focus on the subject rather the posters? You look around for chances to jump in and admonish ppl for having the nerve to have their own opinions on a subject, for daring to disagree with the coaches or FO and to belittle them for it. I have no interest what so ever in anything you have to say. You never really stand for anything anyway......you try to be vague and non committal so that you can deny it when called out for being wrong......like back when the Pat white arguments were going on. A subject on which you weren't man enough to just admit you were wrong. You couldn't possibly be anymore petty and I just couldn't care less what you think or have to say. And I didn't give a "medical" opinion....... did you see anywhere that I claimed to be a doctor? Or that I was basing it on any medical background that I had?.....no and most ppl with any kind of brain in their head didn't just assume that I was a spinal surgeon, giving a professional opinion. Just like most ppl on here I was just saying what I felt, giving my opinion, take it or leave it. But no, it must be soooo important to you that you have to hound me about something so ridiculous...... you have a serious personality disorder and I would appreciate you just staying clear of me and my posts or we can let the mods once again tell you that you need to check yourself. Personally I think Carey has some back issues to go along with his other problems....... and his being over weight like he is, coupled with what I have observed tells me that my opinion could have some validity. If you don't think so, that's all you had to say and keep that smartass crap to yourself.
it doesn't mean its right and not deserving of serious criticism Dpate. Also the fact that our strength and conditioning coach got fired could be an indictment on where he allowed Carey and others to be in the first place...
for example if Matt Hassellback took one offfseason and dedicated himself in the gym I would jump on his ***.
Yes and no Deej, keep in mind a Qb wears a flak jacket anyway to absorb some of the energy from blindside hits, that doesn't mean a cookie dough lower body is ideal but Qb's make their money from the their arm and brains not from their ability to run down the field or to have a good initial step.
i saw alot of laziness from carey last year wether it's a back problem,a shoulder problem or a gut problem doesn't matter,he has not played upto the contract given him and we should have a plan going into the year incase he continues his trend of the last 2 years. doesn't matter to me where we get that replacement wether it's the draft,f.a or home depot the rt position needs to be played better or we are in for another long year.cutting carey outright may not make alot of sense but continuing with turnstyle and no real competition doesn't make sense either.
You should probably not post anymore if you are going to be this sensitive. Or actually even if you are not for that matter. You absolutely gave a medical opinion in even the most generous of contexts. You diagnosed and gave prognosis on an injury. I don't think anyone would mistake you for a doctor, especially given an actual medical professional would require you know, something tangible to base an opinion on.
You're acting as if he's a 400+ something woman riding around on her Rascal scooter at Walmart picking up ice cream. Managing the shape of an NFL big man is not as easy as changing his diet or having him run more laps. Some of these players have to work to keep on weight like the Zach Thomas' and Jason Taylor' of the world, and some of them have to work to keep it off like Carey, and NFL staffs have to identify the best they can reasonably do. Carey being at the 340 or so pounds he plays at is NOT unreasonable in any sense, given he's played at an elite level doing so.
Carey got owned in the last half of the year. If he's going to play that bad again, I say let him walk.
I'm a big proponent of finding an alternative at RT. However as that alternative isn't currently on the roster, keeping VC seems to be the correct course of action. I'm not sure he can actually move inside to guard at this stage of his career relative to the coaching staff and how long they've seen him. What I mean by that is that if they felt that he was a solution at guard, wouldn't they have already moved him there? Recall what Sparano and co. did with Leonard Davis when he moved from the Cardinals to the Cowboys. He struggled as a LT with the Cards but flourished in his first year (after signing that monster FA contract) when being moved to guard for the Cowboys. I don't think weight is an issue for him in that regard... that man is 6-6 360 or so... I am not opposed to drafting a solid OL prospect with our first round pick. Be that C, G or T. Although it's funny, look at the teams that are left in the playoffs and how many of those had problems along their oline, at least initially this year, with injuries and poor performance. Once you get those units figured out by the halfway mark of the season, it seems success is dependant on the cohesiveness of the group. Tyson Clabo as mentioned previously is a solution via FA.
I would also add that John Jerry at RT may be a way to go next year. I know they tested him at RT during the Senior Bowl practices to which he performed quite well.
Go find an ice pack to sit on..... it'll feel better Well there you go...... I would prescribe some Imodium chewing gum. Your mouth has the runs... Hey I'm not bad at this Doctor thing..
