your making excuses for him, Iam not..I would say he's about 350, and thats absolutely to much weight to be carrying on his frame, especially for a man who has nothing else to do but play football and get paid millions..

I know by his body that he's not doing everything he can to reach his best..and when that happens, I lose respect for the man.

Get ur fat *** in shape damn it...

If 350lbs is too much, why isn't his required weight lower?

With guys of that size its not easy to lose weight, maintain your strength, and still keep the rest of your body healthy. In this situation, I would tend to trust whatever the staff requires of him.

I've been a proponent of moving Carey to Guard, but Jerry at RT does not exactly inspire confidence.

    But

    RT:John Jerry
    RG:Vern Carey
C: Richie Incognito (PFF is way off base on their ranking of Berger imho)
    LG: Nate Garner
    LT: Jake Long

    Or:

    RT:Carey
    RG: Incognito
    C: Berger/Draft pick
    LG: Nate Garner
    LT: Jake Long

    Swing G Pat McQuistan
    Swing T Lydon Murtha

Though imho Murtha could move Jerry to the Bench as JJ was bad in 2010, to me that is a good beginning to a Oline though McQ should face competition at the swing G position, to me maybe Ray Feinga takes it from him as McQ had to many penalties in 2010.

Carey was a top RT in 08 and 09. Last season, there was a big drop off but, he was still a bit above average. IF the injuries are not a continuing problem, he is a keeper.

In addition to the Jerry option, Garner has played pretty well in 09. Thoughts on Garner's place on the OL?

Ok, sure String, yeah, Vernon is playing at his optimum level, relative to his weight and frame, YEAH RIGHT..... you have got to be kidding me..The ignorance of nutrition, proper weight training, and excuse making in this thread is out of control...

Its obvious to a dead Ray charles that he's not doing what he should in the cafeteria or the freakin weight room.

try the guy @ Center, we really need a Center big-time
or how about @ NT or DE? he's got the size
why not give Jake Long a shot @ QB while we're @ it?

You do realize that's also about when his knee showed up on the injury report? Vernon Carey is probably the only guy who gets knocked around here because he plays injured.

Well that's the coaches fault for having a hurt player out there taking snaps from someone who could do more then be a turnstile. Carey offered little, if any, protection for our QB. We always had to keep a guy in to protect him. Sparano is supposed to be a O/L coach. He has shown me very little skills in the way he poorly handled the O/L this year.

maybe his injuries which results into inconsistent and nonexplosive play, could be prevented if he played at his optimum weight and body fat ratio...maybe ya know.

To be fair, what a novel concept, Carey gave up 4 sacks. Long gave up 6.

The reality is there is no shortage of effective, high snap count "fat" NFL linemen, and Vernon Carey is just one of them. The reality is, you can be a 350+ pound linemen in the NFL and be dominant, and have a high snap count.

Applying a bizarre morality to it and equating fat to lazy is just getting silly.

There's no bizarre morailty, just a bottom line, the man is NOT doing everything in his control to be the best football player HE can be...and when your getting paid millions JUST TO DO THAT,and you choose not to, than you deserve the harsh criticism.

Absolutely none of this stands up to scrutiny. Lyndon Murtha completely healthy was a worse option than Vernon Carey injured. Carey, even when he was injured for half the year graded out essentially average in Pass Protection according to Pro Football Focus.

How did Sparano poorly handle the OL this year, especially in this context, given that A). He had no say in personnel prior to this last two weeks or so, and B). Their precaution, Nate Garner, went down early in the season?

And yet, virtually all the franchises in the NFL seems to have little problems with this horrendous crime that is supposedly being perpetrated against I'm not sure whom. I wonder why?

Vernon Carey losing weight to get down to whatever arbitrary number that you are assigning as appropriate would not make him a better player if he lost power and ability to plant and not be moved. The fact that he, at the same size he is now when he's been healthy is able to athletically stay with high quality speed rushers suggests what the Dolphins franchise seems to think, that his weight is appropriate for him at this point.

To be fair, it's much easier to get sacks from the LT side of the field as most blitzes come from that side because the QB's are right handed. Long was solo in his pass attempts. Giving up 6 alone and with one arm in some games. Carey had one and sometimes two people to help him. If he hurt his knee because of him carrying too much weight, he needs to say no to all the eating and watch his diet and exercise better. He is getting paid millions to do that.

Because being quicker on your feet has no upside at all as a Tackle?

Nah, what we do instead is blow a receiving option, whether it be a TE or RB, by keeping them in to block to help Carey out. But his weight was critical in the strength he needed to really boost our running game this year to a league impressive mid 20's

But I know, how dare I say such a thing.

True story. There were 8 RT's who graded out better than Carey this season (PFF). Half of them gave up more sacks.
I am NOT saying that Carey had a great year in any way. Just that he was far from a "turn style." There were 23 NFL teams with worse.

No, there's an upside to it, but it's balanced with other aspects, and when you've got an elite player at the position you don't **** with it, especially because there are fans on a message board who don't find the player aesthetically appealing enough.

Vernon Carey is not getting any special degree of help in pass protection. If anything, Jake Long got more help after his shoulder injury and it looked like he might not have been a viable starter otherwise.

And again, you do realize he played hurt, right? With a knee injury that eventually got him put on IR?

how do you just assume tony had NO SAY in any personnel moves? The stipulation added to his extension was "more of a role" in personnel....it could mean he had a limited role previously. You shouldnt just assume things, enless, you got your "GM insider" diploma at the same school jetssuck got his PHD :wink2:

We tend to focus way too much on micro-analyzing issues here; the fact is, it is plain to any person with any observational skills whatsoever watching games that something has been wrong with Carey for a while now.

Dating back to the Indianapolis game last season, Carey was getting BULLRUSHED by the Colts' 5th or 6th-best pass rusher.

A man Carey's size, you expect him to be speed-rushed once in a while; but pushed back 10 yards, right into the Quarterback? BY A GUY HE OUTWEIGHS BY ALMOST 100 POUNDS?

I would move Carey to RG if he is healthy this TC, and proceed to find a RT that can play commensurate with the expectations of the position...a road-grader who can anchor the running game. Have Carey follow his lead.

Carey is done as a RT, whether we want to have to deal with that is irrelevant. It's fact, and recognition of it is overdue by at least two wasted seasons.

    Ridiculous.

Sparano always has had control of the day-to-day roster. Every HC has to have that or he ultimately has no power over the players.

That tinkering with the OL days before the start of the season? That was all Sparano.

The releasing players after bad games? That was Sparano.

Who hired the replacements, I don't know if that was Ireland or Sparano. But the cuts were all Tony.

"A while now" being the last half of the last season when he regularly appeared on injury reports?

Because he rated out the 7th best Tackle in '08, and 6th best in '09 on Pro Football Focus, about the closest we're going to get to Professional analysis on the subject. And he ended up scoring exactly average this year, which is hardly "done", especially given the injury issue.

The person with personnel powers makes those decisions period, and it's not Sparano here. It's been Ireland and Parcells, and they're going to listen to Sparano. It's not particularly complicated.

It's not inside information, it's putting known information together and thinking about it. If you are being mystified by critical thinking, then uh I don't know what to tell you.

I know for a fact that there are situations in which a head coach has no personnel say whatsoever because it is something that occurs regularly in front offices across the league. Bill Parcells has famously complained about being in that position in the past with his groceries quote.

This being one of them is evidenced by what occurred where we already had Bill Parcells running the show while Jeff Ireland contributed, and then was reported as time went on to get more and more ability to work autonomously, as he was being trained by Parcells to finally be the guy with personnel control. Not between Sparano and Ireland.

but to try to state the information you are giving based on "an opinion" because you know how some front offices work as a fact is where i have the issue. Sure that is how some front offices around the league work. But to come out and say Tony has no personell control, which is what you said, cannot be proven.

It's not an opinion when we know Bill Parcells had it, and it was given to Jeff Ireland. Jeff Ireland is the guy in charge. He will generally ask the coaches opinion, and the individual position coaches of prospects are asked to evaluate the players as well, but they don't pick the players, the guy in charge makes that decision.

    that is not a fact.

It is not crazy to think tony may have personell control on lineman, certain coaching positions, and even given certain decisions on draft selections or free agents.

Then you have not paid adequate attention.

"Effective immediately, Jeff Ireland will assume full control over all aspects and decisions in regard to the Miami Dolphins football team and support staff," the statement reads. "This was the intent of the structure put in place in the past. Bill Parcells will remain with the club on a daily consultant basis."

It's absolutely crazy, because there are limited, shared resources, and you cannot give two people "ultimate" but differing authority to use those same shared, limited resources with no one being the ultimate arbiter between the two.

It's not as if the power structure that exists in reality is all that murky, either.

Bill Parcells had supreme authority, and did so for several years with the idea Jeff Ireland would be trained to have it and it would be given to him, which happened shortly before week 1.

Brian Gaines is essentially in charge of doing the scouting and the leg work on free agents, while Chris Grier does the same for college scouting. Under them they have their own specific group of scouts.

The coaches are involved as well, but their opinion is essentially asked by the people responsible to give personnel decisions. They do not make their own decisions. Most of the time it will involve scouting particular players, how they fit in the coaches system, etc.

16th. You're arguing that 16th was inappropriately high?

You're basically pissing into the wind here considering Pro Football Focus has interviewed an actual NFL linemen who says PFF's grades correspond pretty well to his line coaches.

wow..are we on different planets on this subject...if one thinks that vernon carey is at his optimum level of physical conditioning and has proper body fat ratio relative to his height and dimensions and relative to the job desrciption then iam gonna have to digress.

Because people work for an NFL team doesn't make their analysis or procedures are untouchable, people get fired all the time, including our own man who WAS in charge..

They could be under the guidance of certain philosophies to allow their lineman to get as big as they want to a degree..which would be a philosophy that I would disagree with..

Vernon carey's body is not reaching its max potential, iam sorry, it just isn't, there is so much more he could be doing to improve his body, which would result in more agility and quickness without losing strength.

Unfortunately pff is all we have to rely on when it comes to these stats. Its also subjective. Ie. Not really stats at all when we look at the oline in particular. Wish it was more in depth than did the guy get a plus or minus on each play. But that is how Sparano grades Henne so i digress.

Seriously, I don't care where I'm pissing because on game day, I saw with my own eyes. I saw Carey playing back on his heals for nearly 3/4 of the season, and that's a no no. Not only does the lineman often draw false start penalties, it makes it easier for both speed rushers, and bull rushing ends to go thru the player. Was it because his knee was injured? I sure can buy into that because before this season, Carey was a darn good RT, or LT.

Grading Vernon Carey as the 7th best offensive Right Tackle is rediculous man. Just plain rediculous.

And YES, I am most definitely arguing that 16th is too high. I'd argue 25 might be as well....
