I know this argument has been brought up many times, but I ask you to make it one more time for my sake. I am a Verizon customer and seeing as how my Enve 3 doesn't have a working ear piece anymore it's time for a new phone. At first I was holding out for the HTC Thunderbolt, but after thinking about having to pay additional for 4g that I wouldn't get to use all the time, and a possible $250 price tag I think I've changed my mind. So right now I'm torn between the Droid X and the iPhone 3g. I won't be changing carriers, so that is not an option.

I just wanted to hear your thoughts from both sides to help formulate a better opinion. I'm familiar with the iOS software and such from having a iPod touch. Also my girlfriend has a droid and my mom just got a droid so I've been learning about that as well. I really don't have a preference for either at this point.

    Thanks guy.

I’d say wait two weeks and pick up the iPhone 4 on Verizon. Feburary 10. You should be able to get a temporary phone in the meantime, if your current phone is totally useless. But since you said you were thinking of holding out for the Thunderbolt, then you shouldn’t have an issue waiting for the iPhone 4, either.

Holding out isn't an issue. I've been using my phone on speaker phone for a week now lol. My question is this; what makes one better than the other? Desides I know you tend to be a proponent of the iPhone and of Apple, what do you like so much about it?

i've had both, and i prefer my Evo 4g... and by both i mean an iPhone 3g not the iPhone4 so thats another story...

but i like the customization and control you are allowed with Android... even without rooting or jailbreaking, droids ability to change how the phone acts and looks in so many ways is a plus to me... the operating system is very fast, integration with google is amazing, etc etc... what it is not as good at is the music side, but to me thats not that important, i have a few songs on there for when im at the gym but i dont really need it to hold all my songs or hook it up to itunes, though there are apps that will allow your android to use itunes to organize your music and put it on the phone... also the fact that apple has a million things you can dock your iphone/ipod too is convenient and something i miss being able to do with my droid phone...

all in all i like both, but i am now a full droid backer and will not be switching anytime soon...

    I agree with this.

My brother has a 4G iPhone and he LOVES that thing. When he was here visiting last year it came in handy more than once with GPS, directions, etc. Then again, any smartphone has that capability now.

I just got a LG Optimus with Droid
    [IMG]

And I am LOVING everything about it.

I think the iPhone is the best phone out there in terms of both hardware and software design. The iTunes App Store utterly dwarfs and outclasses the multitude of various Android Market and sub-clones out there. iTunes’ syncing and the way it hooks in to various apps, whether Apple’s or Microsoft’s, to manage your data is seamless. Right out of the box, it’s basically a usable miniature computer. 20 minutes in the App Store and it’s a sci-fi Swiss army knife. The battery life is better than pretty much anything else out there. Same with its other specs; it’s actually slightly better hardware than the iPad, despite being smaller. I assume you like your iPod Touch: imagine if it could make calls.

There just isn’t any other phone out there that can compare.

You can't compare a 3G to the Evo. Its like comparing the newest laptops to a Pentium 1.

    Now the iPhone 4 however.....

Going through the same decision making process myself. I will probably wait till my dumb (not smart) phone craps out before I pony up. I've heard there will be a better Iphone or that it will work with 4g sometime in the summer. Anybody know anything about this? I've heard good things about the droid but I definitely am an "apple" guy not to mention shareholder.

Apple releases a new iPhone every summer. The release window is practically set in stone at this point, rare for Apple since they like to just release their stuff whenever they feel like.

Don’t count on 4G support, though.

Someone can answer this better than I, but I don't know that Verizon's iPhone will allow for simultaneous phone and internet use, since it is CDMA.

I know there was talk of adding GSM back when, but I really haven't followed it.

Yeah, I don't think Apple will release a Verizon 4G LTE compatible iPhone until later this year or early 2012.

I prefer the iPhone. I don't really like the Android UI (that's just a personal preference) and the music player sound quality is pretty crappy when compared to what the iPhone sounds like. I stream Pandora and listen to my music all day, so it's kind of a deal breaker. I haven't found an Android phone that sounds anywhere close to as good as the iPhone.

Verizon's iPhone 4 will not be able to data and voice at the same time. None of their phones can. However the new 4g LTE phones thunderbolt and bionic will have that capability. This is interesting though....

Nope. No talk and surf the web at the same time on the Verizon iPhone. I know one big thing Verizon included was the wifi hotspot within the phone. I'm not sure what will happen if you're tethered to your computer and you get an incoming call. Seems like that could be an issue for Verizon.

Correct, no simultaneous voice and data, just like every other Verizon phone. That won’t change until Verizon’s LTE network becomes mature enough to start buying LTE phones.

Apple won’t adopt LTE until they can get power-efficient chips that are combo LTE and GSM/CDMA radios. They’d prefer one chip that can handle LTE, CDMA, and GSM, but they’ll settle for one model that does LTE/GSM and another that does LTE/CDMA. I don’t think Apple will adopt LTE until 2013, actually. June 2012 is possible, though.

Every time you read an article about a new phone (be it a droid, Blackberry, or some other mess) they always explain how it stacks up against the iPhone. There's a really good reason for that... It is the device that sets the bar in this market. The thing is easy to use, easy to start, easy to get used to, easy to hack, and can go well over 24 hours without a battery charge (iPhone4).

It has a bazzilion games and apps. Half a bazzilion of them are free... This is a screen shot from a game in motion on my phone:

I've never had an Iphone but I had a blackberry and got rid of it for the EVO 4G. I love this phone, its been solid all around. its fast, the screen res is amazing and the HD video is great, plus it has the camera built into the front and i actually utilize the video conferencing on it. The battery life is absolutely horrible in 4g mode, so i only switch it on when i need it, which is rare. i use the wifi at home and that saves alot of life, as its not constantly pulling from the data network. As arsenal said, the google intigration is amazing as well. Like Mor said, everything is compared to the Iphone for a reason, but the EVO 4G def gives it a huge run for its money. I don't use mine for music as i do have an ipod.

So I think I could purchase either phone and be happy with it, because they both have positives. HOWEVER, it appears that there is one major deal breaker and that is the Droid's ability to function as an MP3 player. Now I understand that iPhone is going to be superior to the Droid in that capacity, because its apple. So I'm not asking which is better between the two. What I want to know, is the Droid's sound and ability to function as an mp3 player at least relatively comparable to the iPhone? Or if I were to listen to the two side by side would I be sorely disappointed in the Droid?

I’d imagine Android phones work fine as music and movie players. The difference is that you won’t get to buy anything from the iTunes Store. Legal, paid content will be much scarcer.

its not that it can't funtion as an mp3 player... sound quality is more than fine, you can get different mp3 playing apps with EQs and adjust as you please... you can download legal music from amazonmp3 right on the phone (or there are actually apps that you can download any song without paying anything, dont know how they are allowed to stick around, but their in the market), you can have widgets with your player right on your home screen to change songs easy while still doing other things...

its fine, i just think with an iPhone being able to use it just like an ipod makes it easier, not to mention the hard drive space they give you for that... playback wise i see no difference, and video wise my evo is amazing with the screen size and HD quality, plus ive outputted from my phone to my TV plenty of times and it looks great with the micro HDMI...

as for battery, that is also not as good on most droids, but i keep a charger in my car and spare batteries which can be purchased on ebay CHEAP... not to mention you can get extended life batteries up to i think like 4000 mah or some ridiculous amount with custom covers to allow your phone to last forever...

to me iPhone wins in integration as an mp3 player just for ease of setup with itunes (if you have that already), and battery life
Droid wins in operating system, ease of use, customization, less restrictions, capabilities, etc

The droids main weakness IMO is that they aren't all the same. Different carriers put different OS versions on their phones, and the phones differ widely with hardware specs. They change the interfaces so two phones with the same OS won’t give the same user experience. This being said, I really like the Galaxy S line of phones from Samsung. I prefer their screens to the iphone4’s, Apple has higher resolution but Samsungs better contrast and more vibrant colors do it for me. At a certain point more resolution becomes meaningless, and those super AMOLED screens are so pretty. This is personal preference and if you can discern the difference the higher resolution may work better for you. Both screens are awesome.

I like the droids app selection over Apples. I know people pimp the number of apps that Apple has, but for me the droid wins this. Open source lets more people make apps and you have a much more diverse selection of free apps that receive constant support from the community. I don’t pay for apps. Also, droids support of flash makes it the far better web surfing selection. HTML 5 blah blah blah, bottom line flash is still widely used on the net.

    **edit**
Thought of something else too. Everyone that I know that has had issues with their iPhone has had extermely positive interactions with Apple getting their stuff fixed. This is not the case with my friends that have had problems with some driod phones. Apple does that way better.

I thought the Itunes store went, or is going DMA free? If so, you can buy mp3's from the iTunes Store and play them on a driod.

Also the Driod (depending on the version) supports far more video and audio codecs than the Iphone does

After reading this thread i thought i would try my evo as an mp3 player. heres the problem with that.. I use mine for email which i am sure you will do as well. i get lots of emails so it goes off maybe every 5-10 minutes. The problem is that when you have headphones in and have a song cranking, it will pause for a sec, play the email or text notification and then go back to playing. its really annoying. i dont know if iphone does that or not..

My sister has Iphone 4, I have Droid X. We put our phones side by side and loaded various web pages at same time, youtube videos, etc. My phone was TWICE as fast as her "amazing" Iphone 4. Maybe where we live doesn't have the best coverage for ATT, who knows. But I seen all i needed to see.

Yes, the DRM has been gone for a while. The issue is that you can’t sync an Android phone through iTunes.

In other words, it might or might not support more codecs that are generally irrelevant because most video and audio these days is distributed with some form of H.264 encoding, which is what iOS natively supports.

The iPhone is where Android stole that behavior from. If you listen to music that often, just set your mail client to wait longer to check for mail.

Totally unscientific, subjective speed tests FTW!

The question was whether you could access content from the itunes store, not use the itunes app. Your statement was:
That isn't true. Plus, there are apps to sync your itunes information (play lists, ratings, play counts etc...)on your driod.

FLV is still the most common video format found on-line. You cannot play those on an iphone without converting them. Easy enough to do, but they play on a droid natively.

Playlists and ratings are not music files, they’re metadata.

And the point still stands: the iTunes Store is larger than whatever Amazon offers.

You can buy any MP3 from the iTunes Store and play it on a driod, how then does your point stand? Maybe I'm missing your point.

You can also buy any MP3 from Amazon and play it on an iPhone.

Most people aren’t going to bother digging into their directory structures, finding the music file, exporting it, adding it to whatever software they use to interface with their Android phone, setting up a new playlist, fixing whatever metadata tags need adjusting, and then finally syncing. Not to mention having to manage two different music libraries (iTunes and the Android sync software) just to put music on one device.

Nor do they have to. As I mentioned, there are apps that do all of that. I'll also take this as an "you're right, a droid user does have the same access to paid legal content as an iphone user" post. Thank you Desides, it takes a big man to admit fault.
