really, we have degenerated to bemoaning Ted Ginn Jr .... really ..... i absolutely agree with those that stated that the mistake we made was not replacing his speed, both on special teams and as a WR .... but Ted Ginn Jr ... we in no way shape or form miss him ..... what he lacks can't be taught (yes, neither can his speed - got it ... but the guy is as glass as they come, it's a shame really).
I still wish we could've kept him. Because honestly, him being on the opposite side would have opened up things for Marshall.
He was criminally misused in Miami. Can't remember how many times he stood on the sidelines while Cobb or Bess returned a kickoff. Ginn was a good returner, particularly on kickoffs, wide receiver skills would have to be developed years down the line, if at all. Remember this wasn't long after Hester initially lit up the NFL. That's what Cameron drafted him for, and he knew he was a hard worker and a good kid that could potentially develop with time. And yes, I know, it's a criminally bad idea to draft a returner at 9 overall. But that's precisely how it was sold to a booing fanbase. It was our current staff that insisted he be a wide receiver first, and a returner down the road. Then when that experiment failed, traded him for pick that was used on an analagous player; Nolan Caroll. Like Ginn, he has decent upside, speedy, good on returns, shouldn't start. I'm happy with Caroll, but you have to wonder about the subtraction by addition logic. Unlike Ginn, Caroll has an injury history and if we had just kept Ginn, the 5th could have gone in another direction. We'd have essentially what we have today, plus another prospect. And it's the sum of the little stuff like that which has eroded by support for this staff, and my enthusiasm for the team in general.
I think it's more so of what you got for him rather than what could've happened had he stayed. He was traded for Nolan Carroll basically. Would you have done that trade straight up?
I got over Ted Ginn Jr a long time ago. He was HORRIBLE while he was here. And he stinks in San Francisco too. Not worth a roster spot.
I still don't quite understand why we got rid of Ginn in the first place. For as much as this regime preaches the importance of ST and winning the hidden yardage battle, I can't understand why they would willingly throw away a potent weapon like Ginn. Maybe he would have been making too much money to be the #4 WR and maybe you don't draft a return specialist at #9 overall but once he's on the team, you have him and you have to make do with what you have. Ted Ginn was soft, wildly inconsistent, had horrible hands and concentration, but damn it he WAS a weapon. 2007 - 34 receptions 420 yards 2 TDs, 24 Punt Returns 230 yards 1 TD, 63 Kick returns 1433 yards 0 TD (at least 2-3 were called back for penalties, 2 for holding on Jason Allen the so called special teams Ace) *2083 Total Yards 3 TDs* 2008 - 56 receptions 790 yards 2 TDs, 7 Punt Returns 54 yards (For some reason Bonamego/Sparano thought Bess/Cobbs would be a better option) 32 Kick returns 657 yards 0 TDs *1501 Total yards 2 TDs* 2009 - 38 receptions 454 yards 1 TD, 5 Punt Returns 28 yards 0 TDs, 52 Kick Returns 1296 yards 2 TDs *1778 total yards 3 TDs* So, even at his worst Ted Ginn Jr chipped in over 1500 yards a season, which is substantial. His best statistical season came in 07 under Cam Cameron who used him the way he said he would, as a returner. Enter Sparano and Parcells, Ginn is taken off of Punt Returns, has his kick returns cut in half and is force into an every down receiver role. That's not how you play Ted Ginn. He was horribly miscast in 2008. In 2009 he had one of the greatest days a kick returner has ever had setting records in the process of racking up 299 yards and 2 TDs totalling 201 yards against the Jets. If special teams is as important as we're constantly told by this regime, why let the best special teams player the Dolphins have ever had walk out the door?
Thanks Padre. Nothing like a good ole Teddy Ginn debate to get the weekend off to a roaring start. Oh the memories. I'm glad he got a shot at a fresh start. I also think the injury to Sheets makes the Ginn trade seem more questionable.
I propose that this re-ocurrent debate should be continued after next year .Teddy had an injury plagued season this year so his performance was underwhelming. I propose we bump this thread next year and see where he stands.I predict he will have at least a couple of game changing plays.BTW how long has it been since we had some game changing plays ? Oh yes .Against the Jets where he had three Jet killer game changing plays. I am sure the Jets are happy he is out of our division.
Would have been a great guy to have at flanker instead of playing the ineffective Polite or Mastrud so often this year.
You can't rate players like that. "IF" Tony Mandrich wouldn't have been using steroids, etc. What's happened is all that's relevant.
What happened was that in an injury plagued season he still produced 1,487 total yards and 2 TDs. That yardage number is significant.
No but the point is they had the correct lineup to play for the next year and blew it. The specific players they needed to spread the field and attack from Henne's strengths were constantly ignored. At the end of the Lions game Miami went into its standard formations and terrible play calling as expected and they blew it.
Sorry to beat the dead horse but I 100% believe Ted Ginn was hated from day one thanks to Camerons "Ginn Family" reference and the fact 80% of YOU wanted Brady Quinn....Yes Ted was a bust but no where near the bust Quinn wouldve been. Also what has always made me laugh is how Jason Allen got waaaaay more of a free pass and to this day I dont understand why considering Ginn made a much better impact for the Phins.
The guy couldn't get open deep, he couldn't catch when he did get open, and he was spineless scared to death to go up for a ball. He wasn't even used full time as KR this year in San Fran. Who cares what some player or person in the organization thinks about Ted Ginn?? The guy was a waste, and not having to look at that mistake year after year is worth getting a 5th rounder out of.
Tim Dobbins makes over $2 million a year, base salary. Ted Ginn doesn't even crack that base salary amount. And some of you guys are worried about wasting money? Ted Ginn's contract was not that mind-boggling, IMO. Five year contract, under $20 million... with the last year voidable. It was pretty cap friendly too. I understand not wanting him because he wasn't going to be a number one or two receiver... however he could have played that returner role and the 4th WR role. Look at what type of effect that Devery Henderson has on his team.
You can put me in that boat too brah, I'll be a Ginn fan forever just for one Jets game, and the 2 SF fans I work with are happy he's on the team FWIW
This quote is from an interview Jeff Ireland did with Joe Rose Friday morning. You traded him for a 5th round pick, Jeff.
If It Were Me, I Would have Kept Ginn And See What He Coulda Done For Us W/ Marshall. We had Up to Week 6 to Trade Him So Why Not Exercise That Right. Some Might Say, then We Wouldnt Have Nolan Carroll!!! But I Believe Nolan Carrol Would have Been Available in the 7th Round Instead of Picking McCoy.
