With the Packers winning the Super Bowl tonight and all of this talk about how great and storied a franchise they are I thought it would be interesting to shed light on the fact things can be turned around.

I know that we are in a "dead period" as an organization as far as being the team that we want to be, but the Packers went through something even worse than us. From 1973 to 1992 (the year they found Favre) the Packers made the playoffs only once, in 1982. This won't make it any easier to swallow the fact that another year went by with us watching another team winning a championship, but hopefully it provides a little bit of comfort in the idea that we can make a turn around at any time. Now I think we've got some of the pieces in place, but hopefully this off season proves to be a big one in Dolphin history.

It will be turned around when we too find a QB and its not Chad Henne. St. Louis Rams started a turn around after waiting 4 years for Bulger to wake up again. It wasn't magic, they drafted a kid named Sam Bradford. When we get an Aaron Rogers or Sam Bradford then yes, the turn around will start.

It's not that we are a quarterback away from being a good team. It's that we can't even start the journey to being a good team until we have a quarterback.

Well uab, you may look at the Packers and their SB win, for me the organization that I look at is the Redskins.

That was a once proud franchise winning 3 Sb's, their stadium was sold out week after week, then the team was sold and the wheels came off because they had a Owner/Fan buy the team and step into the Football Decision making process.

And they have tried everything to get back ontop, spend large money in FA, they Drafted Qb's in the first rd, they even managed to coax their version of Don Shula, Joe Gibbs away from Nascar Success and back onto the football field and they had some success, enough so Gibbs stepped away after a single playoff appearance (and loss).

The one thing they have never tried is..patience, in the Snyder era they have never found their guy and just stuck with him, compared to the two teams in this yr's SB, which are models of Stability, they find their guys and stick with them.

I think there is a lesson in there for Dolphins fans.

How did you come to that decision dj? Did you study the roster? Watch every game and grade players?

    How?

The Redskins are a fascinating, if not slightly frightening, case study in a path the Dolphins could easily make a mistake and go down, all the way down to recycling a "fmr' Super Bowl winning HC..twice.

The hint here is that GB ended their drought with Favre and ended the next drought with Rogers. Coincidence? I don't think so.

The only hope we have as a franchise is that the FO realizes this and finally makes a significant investment into the QB position.

As with anything in the NFL, spending a first round pick on a QB guarantees you nothing. But I guess I don't see your point. Are you suggesting that because several first round prospects at QB have failed over the past few years that we shouldn't spend a first round pick on a QB? Some work out, some don't. But look at the percentage of first round QBs that succeed as compared to 2nd round picks. We can nitpick over exceptions to the rule all we want, but bottom line is since 2005 (when the rules began to severely favor passing offenses) 5 of the 6 winning QBs have been first round picks. Is that a trend we or any other team in the NFL should be ignoring?

Well now, why would "the passing rules have changed" not make Campbell more likely to succeed?

The Redskins have done everything their fans have wanted, from spending big money in FA, trading for Veterans, hiring the "hot" head coach, drafting a Qb with a high pick, bringing back the old beloved head coach, switched to the 3-4..twice etc.

They have maybe 2 playoff appearances in that entire time, the only thing that they have not attempted is..patience, they have the panic thing down pat, the patience thing..not at all in all of that time no coach has made it past 3 yrs..just like the Dolphins.

I just love it when people bash on Henne and say we need a QB but haven't a damn clue who they want to replace him with or how in the hell they plan on landing one. There are so many mouthbreathers at this board.

Just any QB will do just for the sake of getting a QB as long as it isn't Henne. :az:

Yep, if it is thought about, the Dolphins problem has been over the yrs they have acted as if we were the SnyderSkins, trades, splashy signings, hot head coach hire at the time, etc etc

GB rarely makes big trades, rarely signs big named FA, will let fan favorite players walk via FA or trade, if the packers are to be considered the paradigm, which I do not think the are, they merely won a SB, then compare their methods to the Dolphins over the same period of time and the differences are huge.

Compare our methods to the Redskins and the sameness is disturbingly similar small wonder our results parallel their results over the last decade.

Again, what is your point? Are you against making a significant investment in QB just because Jason Cambell failed? And, FWIW, he's been an ok QB in this league so far. And with the patience thing, why even bring that up? What good is patience going to do any team if you have a QB that simply cannot succeed at this level? If you're talking about Henne I'm all for him getting another shot. But you can't assume he can or will succeed. You bring in another QB for him to compete with.

Did you ever stop to think that maybe some of us realize we're not qualified to suggest who our next QB should be? We just see the product on the field and realize for the past couple of seasons Henne isn't getting it done. I don't want to speak for anyone else, but for me personally I can see that Henne is probably not good enough to take this team to a championship. Notice I said probably. So as a fan, who earns my living in something much different than scouting football talent, I'll leave that up to Jeff Ireland as to who, if anyone, should replace Henne and hope he gets it right.

-using a high pick on a Qb is no guarantee of anything
-because Redskins fans and Dolphins fans lack patience
-depends on what one means by success and were the team is heading into this season.
-not talking about Henne, I've been consistent in that I no longer trust Henne to be our starting Qb

I'm speaking of the parallels between how the Redskins have done business for the last 10 yrs and how the Dolphins have done business for the last 10 yrs and the similarities therein, recall Campbell led the Redskins to the playoffs and Gibbs left thinking he had filled the Big 5 positions, it did not work out that way because a team has to be at least competent overall, in all 3 phases, then they can make one unit elite (imho) the Redskins Oline was a disaster waiting to happen and it did happen.

There is a lesson in their for Dolfans.

So how bout taking a minute and explaining to me the difference in someone COMPLAINING about a QB and not stating who they want to replace him with...............

and YOU complaining about anything else?

Are you now in charge of who can complain about WHAT?

    Talk about hypocrisy.

I get tired of what you are doing, but except for my letting you know this, THIS ONE TIME, I just let them have their say. You complain, I try to let it go.......normally.

Sorry BUT.........It sounds to me like you have yourself on a pedestal.

    Padre,

    Bolded your responses and replied.

-using a high pick on a Qb is no guarantee of anything

Agreed but that doesn't mean you don't try just because someone else failed. Especially when there are just as many, if not more success stories.

-because Redskins fans and Dolphins fans lack patience

Don't pretend we are any different than any other fan base. All fans are impatient when they suffer through enough losing seasons. Steelers fans are content because of the continued success. It's easy to be patient when you have proven QB and proven coach, both who had almost instant success in this league.

-depends on what one means by success and were the team is heading into this season.

I think you have to trust the talent of your QB to take you to a Superbowl and win. Anything less and what's the point?

-not talking about Henne, I've been consistent in that I no longer trust Henne to be our starting Qb

    Agreed.

I agree. It is ownership fault for listening to fans. If the owners do everything the fans hate and win the superbowl, then they will sell out. Fans only care about winning. Just collectively are really stupid when it comes to how to win.

Did you ever stop and think that you aren't qualified to evaluate where Henne's development is at this point. The people who are in that position will be willing to give him another shot in a new system which is the right thing to do. It cracks me up that you are clueless to who you want to replace Henne and use the I'm not a talent scout yet you can say he probably isn't good enough. See people just love to ***** and moan about things they know nothing about.

If there wasn't any hope none of us would keep watching.

I'd like to see Chad Henne work on his athleticism in the offseason. I think that could help his game greatly. I think somebody should send him the P90X plyometrics workout. If that doesn't improve his agility than he's just doomed to move like Drew Bledsoe forever.

Realistically Henne will probably be starting again unless a trade is made for Orton. If they somehow acquire a second round pick and then trade it for Kolb I'm going to jump off of my roof.

I will agree that this QB class is probably one of the worst to come out in a long time.
I don't think anyone wants one just for the F of it. Most people see how our QB's have been and are. If henne continues to play like he has, we will be in the running for the #1 pick next year and then we can get a potentially great one.

Kp, without turning this thead into "henne haters" and "henne homers" let me ask you this, what part of henne's development is he responsible for? You keep blaming Lee and Henning for things he could clearly develop on his own (like staring at receivers).

You told MonstBlitz he wasn't qualified to evaluate where Henne's development is at this point. What makes you qualified to evaluate henne's development? Just curious.

When Green Bay lost to Favre's Vikings not once but twice last year, "patient" is not a word I would use to describe Packer fans.

"Fire Ted Thompson" has been a rallying cry of many Packers fans for years.

Well, that is the logical conclusion especially when one considers the only Qb's working with Daboll are Henne and..Brandstater(?) as Thigpen is a FA and Penny is pretty much irrelevant, such work prior to any labor issues will give Henne a huge edge heading into Training Camp.

So what you are saying is QB's shouldn't have coaching and should be able to complete each step of development on their own. Sure Henne is responsible for himself. Coaches are trained to see things young players do wrong and change and make adjustments to the mistakes.... I can't believe I have to explain this.
Henning was a stubborn ol' bastard that wasn't going to change. Thinks any QB should know his style. Lee has never developed an NFL QB ever. He was the Wildcat guy remember. Those two were a recipe for disaster with a young QB.

Well Henne is still very young and was put in just about every bad situation a young QB could be put in last season. He has a lot of talent. You don't have to be a qualified evaluator to see that you can't just throw the guy away without giving him a shot in a different system with a guy who is good with QB's. For the record that poster was the one who said he lacks the qualifications to evaluate I was just reinforcing his acknowledgement. You see when fans get impatient they tend to snowball their beliefs into facts. When that happens I'm here to bring them back to reality. Henne is still here and will get another shot. I've already stated there has been a lack of development with this QB. If someone denies this they are going on blind hatred. Another point that doesn't need evaluator qualifications to understand.

Do you really think it's that big a stretch for me to say Chad Henne probably cannot lead our team to a Superbowl based on his body of work the past two seasons? I watch the NFL, but very little college football. That's why I don't comment much about which QB we should draft. It would be a complete guess. And I've never said Henne doesn't deserve another shot. Just that it would be foolish for this FO to assume he can improve enough to be the QB of this team without making him compete for the job.

No, it's a "We need a QB" mentality. How, where or when we get one is not up to me or any other fan on this board, unless Jeff Ireland is a member. I never said we have to take a first round QB in this year's draft. If one isn't available at our pick and / or Jeff Ireland honestly feels that none of these QBs has what it takes to be a franchise QB then he will have to look to FA for a stopgap and look to next year's draft. Again, that's not up to me. I'm just a fan and admit I cannot speak intelligently on college QB prospects. But I can go out on a limb and say Chad Henne probably isn't the guy. I hope I'm wrong. I'd love to see Henne succeed in this league.

    Friend cdz12250 (agree & disagree):
    1) the biggest screw up in 2010 was the offensive line. to this day, I can't imagine what Sparano was thinking when he dismantled & dismissed one of the better NFL starting offensive lines, replacing them with rookies & journeymen. it all begins in the trenches & I believe we have to repair the offensive line in the 2011 draft/free-agency. it is the priority.
    2) I was one of the first to call for replacing Henne & I still think he is a bust. however, he's a bust that had no running game to build on because the offensive line was an even a bigger bust. traditional wisdom: establish the running game & the passing game will fellow. unless of course, you're the GreenBay Packers.
    3) only franchise potential, quality players should be brought aboard to rebuild the offense in 2011. if there is no great QB option available but a great RB, Center or Guard are all probably available, then that is the way we should go. there are a number of less expensive ways to to create competition in the QB stable & if the rest of the offense is strong, we can @ least be competitive with the defense we bring to the table in 2011.
    4) I completely agree we go nowhere without the Franchise QB & finding one has to be a priority in our commitment to eventually get to the SuperBowl, just have my doubts it can be done this year & recognize the immense job ahead of rebuilding the offense. fix what you can fix the right way with the quality players available now. next year may be a better time to draft a QB, all I am saying is it might be a wise thing to acquire a perspective consistent with our current state of affairs. less expectation & more patience is more or less the correct course as I see it. I would be content to have a competitive, winning season as we rebuild the offense, knowing that once things are in place we can bet the table on the right QB to lead us to a SuperBowl. honestly, I think we're still two or three years off making that run for the big brass ring.

hope Ireland makes the right decisions for the franchise

Well, I'd still take a long hard look at Vince Young.

However it would be far better to develop our own Qb, but the way this season is shaping up a Coach and GM would have to have a Career Death Wish to draft one with a high pick, so in that curiousity that is Miami Dolphins football, the very thing fans clamor for, "get a Qb" is the very thing they are least likely to have happen.

    Ironic..ain't it?

I really think the answer lies in free agency this year, be it Young, Hasselback, whatever there are @ least ten possibilities developing. I think we need to do it as cheaply as possible, if there is no Dan Marino in the draft, next year there very well may be:

    1) something to be said for what Friend Killerphins posted about Miami & the developmental process & we will need another two years to develop a drafted QB. makes more sense not to break the bank, but go with a veteran & open competition in the stable for the start.
    2) we need @ least two quality offensive linesmen, a running back & a return specialist/wr with exceptional speed. what are the chances, if we go for broke on a QB? the obvious answer: not very good

fix right what is fixable in 2011 & move on.
