That is where a savior like Cam Newton comes in.
    Bad footwork and all.
Boomer says he has all the tools but won't be able to start right away.
I have to laugh at all the creative nonsense in the thread to move up to get this guy.
Newton is going to be a failure at the next level.
    Another great college football player.

Disagree, history shows that mobile Qb's with big arms usually pan out Killahp, if anything there is far more risk in taking a pocket passing Qb as if the defense pressures or confuses them with coverages their only counter move is to check down, or throw the ball away, with this new generation of 6'5 230 pds plus Qb's who can run like a tailback they have a counter move..tuck the ball and run.

Where was Ryan Leaf going? Or Chad Henne?

Nowhere, thus the ball is thrown away, or checked down, or they are sacked.

come on Bro, we say that for 13 games in 2010, we should know how that story ends by now as we have seen it often enough "and Henne throws the ball 10 feet over the receivers head and out of bounds"./

    You are right actually , 7 and 9 , 7 and 9 , maybe 8 and 8 , 9 and 7 , 6 and 10 ... no reason to improve QB play.

I pay about as much heed to Mort's evaluation of draft prospects as I do to Laura Bush's

Ryan Mallett, Blaine Gabbert......they shouldn't start right away either.

The fact that someone has all the tools and has to start straight away aren't mutually exclusive.

Try watching more than some highlights on College Gameday and the National Championship game.

There is a bottom line in all this mess..

We need a young QB to revive this dying franchise, our brand is taking major hits, our logo has no more appeal...Its sounds stupid, but hope needs to be restored, and only a bad *** young cocky QB can do it.. so Irish better use all the talent he has in identifying the right one.

If they give up a draft pick for orton or some other free agent, they will continue to die a slow death..

Its time ya'll..Mallett...Newton..Ckap...Those are the three that could jump start an energy source...energy this franchise desperately needs..

    Time to man up..

Hmm, agree and disagree Deej, yes the Dolphins brand has a black eye atm, however "panic seldom works" should be the approach they take to improving the franchise, a young Qb, or a Vet, if we do not win more games it won't matter at all.

Aaron Rodgers sat for 3 years. Was he a waste of time? (Not defending Newton, just arguing against this logic)

Once again I love how people compare a college QB who hasn't played a down in the NFL to a SB MVP.Do you know for a FACT that Newton will be Aaron Rodgers in three years? The comparisons are laughable.

Thing is, the HC who drafted Rodgers, Sherman, was fired after that season, and they already had Brett Favre, they could afford to sit him.

Does anyone really think A) this regime will take a Qb early with all that went on a couple of weeks ago? B) we have enough talent to sit a #1 pick for three yrs?

And folks wonder why I like Vince Young.

Carson Palmer sat a year ... as have others....

You have a pre determined agenda against a player for no valid reason. This franchise NEEDS a franchise QB more than they need some player to contribute to a strength area ( Odrick DL ) cough cough ...

Have you addressed the issue of who you have pegged to be this teams QB that will lead them to a Super Bowl?

It may or may not be Newton , but deciding against ANY QB because he needs time develop is seriously flawed.

Weren't we under .500 the last 2 years? That has brought us closer to a needed positive at QB how? GB drafted Rodgers while they still had Favre , knowing he wasn't going to contribute initially , when it was time to move on ( and kudos to GB for doing so ) they did and are not looking back ... Miami should have been doing this in the latter Marino years .... we STILL don't have a QB , yet somehow , magically that will be rectified how?

I'm no expert, nor do I claim to be, but I trust my eyes. I never liked the way Vince threw the ball, and I don't think anyone ever thought he had a big arm. Cam seems to embody that same athleticism as Vince, but also have a more "pure" throwing motion, and enough accuracy to threaten all levels of the field.

Also, all the things we hear/read about Vince like not putting in the work, acting entitled, being an otherwise nut don't seem to apply to Cam. Teammates, coaches, etc. seem to all rave about his work-ethic, willingness to learn and lead, and his ability to take valid criticism and learn from it.

I just hope that if we do take him, our coaches don't take a guy that seems gifted enough and bog him down (which is what I think happened a little bit with Henne).

You speak as though every QB taken in the first round is a gimme so if we take one he will automatically be a franchise QB. The Rodgers comparison continues to crack me up. It is not the same situation. You do understand that QB's taken in the first round fail right? They can become busts. Personally I don't see one of these guys worthy of the value but that is me. I don't want to take one just to take one and realize a year later we fugged it up.
For the record I thought the Odrick pick was a waste last season.Watch what I'm saying the guy will have problems with his leg for the rest of his career. Will end up a bust like Philip Merling.

Well KillahP, take a walk with me down the sunshine, blue sky and lollipop trail of optimism:

-Assume we draft a young Qb at #15, but Chad Henne pulls a Drew Brees and blossoms in his fourth yr, we would have a situation like the Chargers, or Packers or Patriots had, 2 young Qb with tons of potential, one with over 40 starts under his belt and a career record of 28-21..

Could happen, no one saw Brees improving in 2005 after Rivers held out, Rivers was in effect the #1 over all pick in 2004..and Brees surprised everyone with his improved play..so much so Cam Cameron got weepy just talking about him..

I know it is difficult projecting good things happening to this Franchise, sort of like speaking a different language, but do try, it can happen...now I have to refill my Koolaid jug..

Eh, don't do it yet, not saying never do it, but this will be a long offseason and I'd bet if the labor stuff gets ugly they will offer even steeper discounts for subscribers.

My unvarnished, non Koolaid opinion is:

Until we see what happens this offseason I simply cannot make any predictions positive or negative, we know what the staff looks like, we have no idea what personnel moves they will make via trades, draft, free agency etc.

As for optimism, I watched Nolan's Defense in Denver, believe me when I say what we saw in 2010 was mostly his base package looks, in Denver Nolan was throwing everything but the kitchen sink at offenses, Eagle formations, 2 down D linemen, safety blitzes, AGap blitzes galore.

We rarely ran that stuff in 2010, it was mostly base 3-4, 4 man nickel rush lines, with another offseason Nolan should be able to dial things up for 2011, for the first time since the late 90's we could see a dominant Defense in Miami. For all of the love Saban got as a Defensive Guru, the 2010 defense was as good, if not better, this with 20 dropped interceptions.

That has me stoked up a bit.

Newbie ST assistant Dave Fipp also had 3 pro bowl alternates in 09, so there are some reasons for optimism.

Which is why I'm pro Vince Young, let him be an Athletic Qb and create plays and hopefully TD's, have a big play generating offense and rely on ST and Defense if he messes up throwing deep downfield..why not?

If I do it your way than I go get Mcnabb...He wants to play in warm weather, and he said hes dedicated to getting the max out of his body for his next team...says hes reenergized...Please everyone, I know his flaws...But he would be someone that has a skillset that would compliment the rest of the team, especially from a leadership standpoint, the ability to extend a play, and if his heads on strait, to lead an efficient offense.

QB's taken in the first round do bust , fail to live up to expectations and perform merely adaquately. They also tend to succeed and play at a franchise level , moreso than QB's taken later in the draft.

Baltimore took Kyle Boller in round one in 2003 , bust , they took Flacco in round one in 2008 ... bust? No.

Do they have a Qb they can count on ? Yes . Do they have a franchise QB? I say yes , certainly a QB that they feel much better about than we do with the QB's on our roster.

You select a QB till you get the guy you need. Selecting QB's in round one is a better option for success than trying to "find" one later in the draft.

You point out other players bust , so what is advantage to IGNORE the most dominant , important position ? That your choice MAY bust? While others also do , and you have nothing settled at the QB position , sounds to me like the recipe Miami has been following UNSUCESSFULLY for years. But hey , no reason to think it won't change , right?

Why pointing out other QB's that have needed time cracks you is beyond me. Again , it MAY not be Newton , but it has to be someone. Selecting a QB high gives you more probability for success at that position than taking one later. Waiting a year or so if needed is something I am willing to do ,but hey , maybe ignoring the dearth of QB play this team has had for a decade may actually be the way to improve from mediocrity.

He does that alot. Especially when someone tries to make sense out of replacing his favorite QB.

I have watched a lot of Newton this year. His highlights are great, but so is his regular play. He would make this offense better at the QB position the minute he stepped on the field.

Iam well aware 22, and have been critical of the very thing you accuse him of...Basically I projected his downfall and related it to not taking the proper steps of conditioning relative to his position and age.....However, ive seen some recent things from his mouth that make me think this child of a man has the ability to become motivated to prove people wrong..and I dont need him to be 25, just to become angry enough at the world to shut his mouth and dedicate himself once again...If I trust that motive from him, I would take that version Of mcnabb as opposed to what some folks want here...

Our franchise is in the gutter brother..Hes someone that could man the position while we draft our young skillset this spring..Let the two with similar skillsets Mcnabb/Newton or Mcnabb/ Ckap grow together for a year or 2 and go from there..

This is what I would do..

Donovan McNabb is now lazy, huh? I disagree 100%.

I'm getting really sick of everybody claiming that all these black QBs are lazy. So I guess all the black QBs not named David Garrard and Josh Freeman are lazy? Yes, JaMarcus Russell and pre-conviction Mike Vick were lazy. Big deal. Tim Couch was taken with the #1 overall pick by the Browns, but he was too stupid to learn the playbook. Does that mean David Carr and Alex Smith busted because they were stupid too?

Eh, I agree with Deej GHead, McNabb looked like his legs were gone last season, he was 33ish and he just looked d-o-n-e.

I don't necessarily think he is done, do think he should rededicate himself to his craft.

There's a difference between "defeatist" and "realistic". The fact is that almost no draft trades occur without getting within 100 points of the draft chart. It will take more than every pick we have this draft to get near that for any pick above #8. Sure, you could throw in players. I'm sure we could trade Long and get up there, but then it becomes a question of value. Are these prospects worth every pick we have plus more? I don't have that high of a value on them.

As for Mallett, I think he has exactly the kinds of negatives that have resulted in the vast majority of the first round QB busts. Obviously, some teams ignore those negatives since there are so many first round QB busts. And its also possible that Mallett will be the exception, but I don't find that to be a smart bet. I expect that Newton will be so impressive that he will go in the top 5.

A take off on "son of man" perhaps?

As for being lazy, that is a loaded term, however Brady turned what..34? And he plays like a younger man, to me that does say something about McNabb's conditioning.

You can be a drama queen without being lazy. The two do not go hand-in-hand.

Be careful about accepting "black man is lazy" stereotype. You try to run an NFL offense. We'll see how lazy you are.

I am not anti black QB's at all. Reviewing my posts will show this. However just because McNabb is black doesn't shield him from justified criticism imo.

It has been widely reported , noted , that McNabb to this point at least , hasn't worked hard physically. Other black players have mentioned this , so this is not a racial issue it is a work ethic issue for a player who happens to be black. Don't make it more than it is , I am pro Cam Newton , because I like his skills , love his upside , know from people that know him and played for Auburn that they feel football matters to him.... that is enough for me to certainly be intriqued in adding him.

Maybe McNabb has had an epiphany as I mentioned , if so , great! Buyer beware though , and I have not seen enough indication of this that I would pursue Mcnabb . Not saying I wouldn't or we won't IF he makes believers out the people that need to believe he will work hard enough to have success.

McNabb was a 4 year started at Syracuse. He was Philly's QB from day one. He's been more prone to scramble than Tom Brady, thus incurring more hits to the body.

Tom Brady is a year younger than McNabb. He started for 2 years at Michigan. He didn't play his rookie year in the NFL.

Putting all that aside, I guess if you're not as prolific as Tom Brady 10+ years as a starter, your lazy!

I don’t think describing Donovan McNabb as lazy automatically means he’s calling all black QBs lazy.

For my part, I happen to think McNabb is and Russell was lazy; Michael Vick admitted that he was lazy in Atlanta but is obviously not lazy now; Garrard and Freeman are not lazy. Cam Newton definitely isn’t lazy. Warren Moon wasn’t. Randall Cunningham wasn’t. Daunte Culpepper wasn’t.

IMO, the real issue is that we’ve heard so much about how black quarterbacks A, B, C, D are/will be great players, and they turn out not to be, and people eventually get turned off by hearing the exact same description of the next supposed-to-be-great black QB. So I think some people are just automatically reacting to Cam Newton by applying the Vince Young scenario to him. They’re wrong to do it, since Newton is far superior to Young as a prospect, but it’s really tough, at least to me, to insinuate racism in this particular instance.

Brady had an ACL tear the same as McNabb and more recently.

To me, it looked like McNabb's legs just had no power to them this past season, like a running back who had been worn down.

That said, I do not happen to think he is done, thought he looked it in DC before he was benched, but I also think it is nothing that a better Oline and maybe better health cannot deal overcome.

WRONG! The only "lazy" criticism of McNabb was by Tim Hassleback, who said he didn't practice with a fast enough tempo. PROVE ME WRONG.
