Nice, I like that move a lot from a morale perspective. His personality should fit in well with how are defense needs to be.
Cox was a talented LB but a trouble making scumbag of a guy. It's a shame Jason Taylor went to the JETS, he'd have been a great "Pass Rush Coach" for us. We all must realize now that since our team has a full time coach in this department if our pass rush is a joke next year, we will be the laughing stock of the NFL. They should have just named Cox as an assistant and left it at that.
Jason Taylor a coach ?? At any level ?? I don't think so...this is the same JT that told the Tuna to shove his offseason workouts to do his twinkle-toes impression....the same one that wouldn't re-sign with us for the vet minimum, but did for the jests ??? Don't think so... I just don't think that a) his heart is into putting in the time to being a good coach and b) that he would really be a very good coach...This is the same guy that arguably had his best years with someone else on the D that the opposition had to worry about as well, the same JT who didn't like the move to OLB in the 3-4 (that is until he did it and had some good years)...no thanks...
The one thing I can say about Cox is that he's put in the time to be a decent coach. You can't always count on great or even very good players being good coaches, but he's put in the time to learn a craft and has had some success. Additionally, he's probably on the cheap and if I were a coach without an organization, I'd be looking to hook up with one real quick before this lockout or strike or whatever is going to happen come March 4 happens. He's been coaching for 5 yrs after a decent pro career.
I think you might be stressing over something that's not really an issue. It's not as if we hired a Super Bowl Specialist to the staff (but I reserve credit when Rex Ryan does). Lots of teams have a nickel package coach. Did people laugh at the first team to do it? I'm not sure if Miami is the first to have a 'pass rush coach', but I doubt we'll be the last. Personally I'm all about doing whatever's necessary to help this team take the next step. Despite a Top 10 finish, they've identified this as a need and are attempting to fill it. Kudos! Whether or not he'll be successful in this role remains to be seen. But he will instantly command the respect of the players. His age (still relatively young), experience, passion and aggression are something players gravitate towards. They appreciate and respect coaches who've 'done it'. Cox was a late round pick from a small college with limited athleticism. But he was a tough, instinctive, physical, fiery leader who notched 14 sacks in his second season and became a three-time All-Pro.
me too OZ, and a connection to our past and tradition, any little bit helps.. Not sure how cox is gonna help Wake in the ole pass rushin dept, but inspiration to work hard, and getting in someones face when they dont, is all iam looking for. Welcome back Home Bryan..Loved that dude, he bled our colors and always had his teammates backs.
I don't understand why Cox would be a pass rush coach. He was a 43 linebacker not a pass rusher. Wouldn't it make more sense for him to be our inside linebackers coach? Or ILB asst coach? Pass rush coach? I loved him as a player. Loved his attitude and loyalty. Maybe he'll bring the same energy as a coach. That could only be a good thing.
I don't think it really matters too much where he played. He knows how to study an nfl film, and I'm not 100 percent sure but he had like 12-14 sacks in one season and was always a pretty decent pass rushing Lb. That's where I see him working most. Getting the Lb's to learn how to shed blocks by using their smarts and balance....
Don Shula was a cornerback in the pros. Yet some were calling him the best QB coach in the league during Marino's rookie season. A better example would be Doug Blevins, our former kicking coach (watch this). A good coach is a good coach.
I think hiring Cox is crazy. If you add this loose cannon to the curious mix of personalities from the owner all the way down to the head coach it spells nothing but trouble. His talent and knowledge was never Bryan's problem, his behavior is. Unless something has changed with him this will be a disaster. Besides, Cox was always more of a run stopper than a pass rusher anyway.
The heat of battle between the lines and sporting khakis on the sidelines are two different things. He's been an NFL position coach for five years. Have we heard anything about him?
First they make our WR coach our QB coach, and now they hire a run stopper for a pass rush coach. The carousel of idiots never ends. This is like watching an animal being tortured.
He also didn’t play defensive line, but he coached the defensive line in New York and Cleveland before coming here. “Pass rush” coach is fine. At the assistant level, coaching is coaching. (I’m okay with Dorrell coaching QBs now too.)
Cox was a talented Lb, who played well against the run, ok against the pass, and he was a good pass rusher. 127 tackles with 14 sacks, and an int in one season
I think he may of been hired for teaching players how to get up for a game at home...lol...hes our personal player motivator coach.
Aren't we being a little dramatic here. I saw Cox rush the passer plenty and he played with a ton of intensity. I like that he is back.
Same here, to me the defense has the pieces, but lacks the attitude. As for the detractors of this move, and the Hilliard as Wr coach moves, think about it first -Hilliard can help to coach up Moore and Wallace -He is not so far removed from playing to be able to talk with Brandon Marshall Bryan Cox: Passrushing is so important, yet the "how" a guy learns his moves is relegated to "he had them when he came to the NFL" which of course, is not good enough, Sparano deserves credit for being innovative, if people recall in 09 Sparano brought in the martial arts expert to teach hand fighting techniques and we finished 4th in the NFL in sacks. That if people loved Mike Singletary why wouldn't Cox fall into the same category? Can anyone who flipped off a stadium full of Bills fans be all bad?
Sparano didn’t conceive MMA training for NFL players. That trend has been around for years. Jay Glazer has more to do with that than Tony Sparano.
Hate to say it but Rex's fatass was the first one that I saw use MMA and boxing for training his players. I think he brought in Teddy Atlas, iirc. I'm sure the amount of time you have to spend on footwork appealed to Rex.
my thoughts exactly. just because you played one position, doesnt mean you cant or dont understand another one. a player could have all the mental makeup of an elite quarterback, but has the physical build and abilities of a linebacker. So he becomes Patrick Willis, Brian Urlacher, Ray Lewis....a quarterback of defense. You play what your body is best suited for, not your mind. Your physical skills can limit you to a position. Your mental skills cannot. A good coach can teach anyone how to do their job better if he understands how to do that job.
Just more crap being inherited from the Cleveland Browns staff. If he was so good at coaching he would still have a job there. The guy is a putz. This staff gets worse and worse every day. Its going to be a looooooooong season folks. Cannot wait until the draft. Watch that magic happen.
The specialist Sparano brought in had worked with the Saints and Cornhuskers iirc, he seemed to have done a good job in 09.
