Per ESPN NY: I know a lot of us around here have been calling for an outside linebacker to complement Wake, perhaps Gholston could be the guy? He's a phenomenal physical specimen, but it just hasn't been able to translate to the NFL just yet. I believe he's salvageable and that he could use a fresh start. Face it, after the stats he put up in New York, no one is going to give him a huge contract, so why not? I'll leave it to you guys for some opinions.... I'll finish off on a little blast from the past.
Nolan has revived the careers (or in this case, started a career) of physically less talented guys. The D is slightly different and he would be a situational guy, but he does have the physical tools...what's holding him back we don't know...maybe some of our jests members can let us in on the issues...
Well, he and Aaron Maybin are the two on the bubble guys I'd like for the Dolphins to take a look at, it seems to me Gholston has the tools but Rexxy just prefers Veteran OLB's, add in the Ghost's lack of ST prowess and it seems to me he and the NYJ's are ready to part ways. Problem being, he is quite wealthy from his #6 overall contract so he may simply not have the desire to make it in the NFL. I think Cam Wake could be a huge help to the Ghost though, both left College with all of the measurables in the world.
I'm sure they're mulling the idea around as I type. if the price is right, why not? sometimes a change brings the best out in a player.
Lord, no. It seems like anyone who gets cut should be a Dolphin. This guy is the definition of a bust and its because he doesn't know how to use his damn hands! He never knew how to use them and its why he's a horrific player.
Hmm, here we go again Alen, to me we have this guy completely scouted from 2008, and I like the idea of Wake mentoring the lad, but if they pass on him it would be understandable. I've maintained Ghost is not a Will, he is a Sam, just because a player has measurables does not mean they are great passrushers Put it this way, would you rather have Q Moses or Ikaika, or the Ghost?
So many people including some gurus get seduced by the physical attributes of a player without considering if said player has football instincts . Gholston does not have them. I never like himed as a draft prospect and I am relieved we did not draft him as had been rumored at the time.I hope we pass this time around too . Aaron Maybin is more interesting IMO.
Maybin and Gholston...2 guys iam on the record for wanting to stay far away from after studying their college film...Maybin I had as the most overrated projected first rounder by the experts in the draft..He had a phoney body.. Needless to say Pod, I dont want either one.
Personally, the guy I've got hopes they pick up is Wallace Gilberry from Kansas City. He had 7 sacks last season, but he did so playing essentially as a passing down DT in the 270 pound range. It's the same kind of situation as they moved Matt Roth and Ikaika Alama-Francis to OLB.
I feel like this needs to be linked whenever Bryan Cox is mentioned: http://www.neilrogers.com/sounds/nn1996/01.mp3
Gholston was over rated coming into the draft and was expected to be a monster and he isn't. Same thing with Adam Carriker, selected number 2 overall, simply over rated from the get go. A player does not have a better venue to play in than in NY and as far as defensive minded coaches go, Rex Ryan has to be at the top of the list. Just another player people dream can be changed over by moving to another team, no way.
At least Adam Carriker has had some success at times with the Redskins now as a 3-4 end. Gholston hasn't done squat.
Maybin and Gholston are the two guys I want us to take a hard look at also. I feel like Gholston could succeed in our defense, because he has the ability to put his hand in the dirt and rush off the edge in a 4 down-linemen set and we run 4 down-linemen quite a bit for a 3-4 defense. I think he needs a fresh start and Miami would be a fresh start.
He may have played better in a 3-4 but no way near he was flagged to be as a player. Same goes with Gholston. They both were physical specimans that had scouts drooling on themselves and they both proved to be nothing near what they were thought to be.
For what it's worth, Carriker's success came in his 4th season after a change of scenery. Gholston is currently in his 3rd season on a different team.
I'd take a look Deej, no harm in that, though I seriously doubt anyone is going to claim him, or his contract, he will be a FA and therefore low cost he has the gears and the strength, let's see what Bill Sheridan can do with him. That and I utterly reject the writer's notion that "IF Rex Ryan cannot develop him, no one can!" Rubbish, show me the linebackers Rex Ryan has ever developed, in Baltimore he inherited Mike Nolan's guys, or they were already there, in NY Harris was there and they signed everyone else as Vet FA's.
Not saying that he's turned out to be worth what he was drafted. I'm just saying at least he's done something. Difference, IMO, is that Adam Carriker was used wrong in STL. Gholston is doing the wrong job period. JMHO.
your missing the key words in my post Pod....''FAR AWAY''.. but if it will make you happy to bring them in for a workout...alright Pod...
Here's a very unlikely scenario that is too delicious to pass up: If we signed Gholston and he actually was a difference-maker, how much would that just KILL jet fans!??!
I don't get some of you. There are players that get cut mostly because of cost and teams having other talent to replace a player. There are others that are cut because they are showing no ability to perform at this level. Gholston is one of those getting cut due to lack of talent. There is no need to waste time on the guy.
Nah, they would still say he sucked. Their Momma's put too much Dioxin in their meatballs when they were young.
I still like Manny Lawson from SF. Like his size and motor and think he could be a great fit in our system.
I do agree that Nolan can make players better but Gholston's had a pretty good defensive teacher in his own right. Rex is a clown to me but if he could not get Gholston to break out, I don't think anyone could do much better.
The Conman speaketh.. I dont know if either one will turn their fortunes around, but based on the tape, they were easy projections to be off their teams in 3 years..
