so what are we doing with the RFA's that have been placed with the original round tender that were undrafted? start bidding on them come Wednesday? Bid on them on Monday and if the original team doesn't match, they get nothing?? Should they have that right???

So, what are the exact rules with transition tags? I was thinking I should have transitioned one of my players...

work same as a franchise tag, but there is no compensation if you are outbidded for them.

Vikings Franchise Sidney Rice, Transition Chad Greenway

In the real NFL, it gives a team the right of first refusal if another team makes an offer for a player… but gives the team no compensation if that player leaves.

I think in the GM League, it’s just a cheaper franchise tag without compensation if another team makes a better offer.

    Make up your mind!

Ya, I understand that part. But, say the Bills make an offer on one of my transitioned players. Then I match it. Are they allowed to make another offer or what? That's what confuses me. (And I'm assuming the offer has to be more than the transition tag worth. right?)

Nah, at the end of the private bidding period, you get one number to match. If you match it, that player is yours.

Also, one more question: Can a team go over their salary cap with transition tags? For instance:

Team A places a transition tag on Bob = $6 million. Team A has a salary cap of $74 million after the transition tag. Team B offers $8 million, which means if Team A matches the offer, it will put them at $76 million salary cap. Can Team B match that offer if it puts them over?

Obviously noone is going to offer $36 million for Richard Marshall, so this is just for future reference in future leagues and I never understood the transition tag in the first place.

if you have a tagged player their tag price goes against your cap space, so yes you have to subtract it from what you can offer.

Team A has 20 Million in cap, but tagged Larry Johnson for 10 Million, he's got 10 to spend on anyone else's tagged player... that's tied up until he loses the bid and lets him walk away.

I'm pretty sure the answer is no... no offer can put you over the cap.

This is the first year I've been in the league that there has been a huge amount of interest in tagged players. I assume at no point can you go over the cap. Just like when all of free agency starts. You can't sign any player that would put you over the cap. My guess is if you want to keep "Bob" you'll have to make enough cap space before you agree to match the offer.

That is just my guess, GIK can confirm or not.

Correct. If you did not tag anyone nor did you intend on bidding on a tagged/tendered player, you do not need to be under until the start of unrestricted free agency. However if you did tag/tender someone or intend to bid on someone who is tagged/tendered, you must have the cap space for that player.

Bump, because I was right. From Jason La Canfora:

And from Wikipedia’s article on the franchise tag, the 2010 tag values were:

Pretty safe to say that Haloti Ngata was designated as a franchise defensive end by the Ravens, and that should be reflected in the GM league.

Not true, Soliai's franchise tender was like $12.4M as well, and he was definitely tendered as a DT.

So no, I don't know that you're right.

So I can explain this to everyone.

The GM League does NOT take their franchise numbers from the NFL!

Because our salary cap is determined strictly by base salary, it is only fair that the franchise tags here are only reflected by base salary as well. Because of this, I take the top 5 players' base salaries at each position and average them out. For example, I will show you how I did the defense tackles:

    DEFENSE TACKLES
    Kevin Williams - $6.0M
    Shaun Rodgers - $5.5M
    Tommy Kelly - $5.5M
    Albert Haynesworth - $5.4M
    Chris Canty - $5.25M
    AVERAGE - $5.53M
    FRANCHISE TAG - $5.53M

Now the way the NFL does their franchise tags, they include more than just base salaries. For example, Albert Haynesworth recently received a $20M-$25M bonus which is included in the NFL's version of franchise tag salary. This is why the NFL's defense tackle tag is so much higher than the one here. If you have a problem with that, then go talk to Dan Snyder... not me.

Now unless people want to have some complex way to handle salaries... it's probably best to stick to what I have down for rules. The way I run our salary currently is the easiest and probably the best way.
