You're right, my mistake. We traded down from 56 to 61. Meaning we missed out on Fili Moala, Paul Kruger, Sebastian Vollmer, Sherrod Martin & Will Beatty. Not exactly elite talent though. Davis is the top CB from 2009, Matthews is the top OLB, hard to argue w/ either pick. Smith is arguably the #2 CB in from 2009, in a year where were thin at the position outside of Will Allen, who never made it past the Saints game. The only elite talent we passed on is perhaps Earl Thomas & Dez Bryant. We traded for Marshall, and Clemons did pretty well back there so we were OK at both SE and FS. Meanwhile we picked up 2 starters and a core ST with that 12th overall from 2010. IMO what you're doing is nitpicking decisions after the fact. Which is cool, not much else to do this time of year lol.
I have to know more about this guy before I could make that kind of decision. His career numbers are really good. I just wonder if he would be another Ronnie Brown. Almost getting there, but, not quite. So the real question is on another team other then Alabama, who beats their opponents by an average of around 40 -7, what would his numbers really look like. I think I would go QB first, then take a strong hard look with more info if he is there. This kind of player is a perfect reason why there should be a cap to the two years contract of all new comers out of college. A league minimum of 1,000,000 with negotiations in the 3rd year, for larger/longer contracts. Players would have to prove them selves and not have the Jamarcus Russell syndrome.
We have no core St players, the unit was garbage and would were would we be with Matthews and Wake, and Allen and Smith? Won't bag on Odie, will say if you keep moving back you simply will not find elite type prospects.
Man you're all over it. I'm almost hoping Jones is not there b/c it would hurt to pass on him. I think I could get over it, but only we can trade down then grab Pouncey-Leshoure-Little, or something like that.
Sucky or not, Dobbins is a core ST guy. Along w/ Hilliard, Cobbs, Jones etc. Core doesn't signify how good a unit is, it just means you're on most, if not all, of the units.
I'd like Ingram BUT...with the potential of an 18 game schedule looming the need for multiple backs will be greater than ever. The team's depth is weak at best with former starters Brown (showed some flashes late) and Williams likely gone. Brown could be back with the right type of contract with Hilliard and Sheets providing some additional options in camp. But the team will need at least one more back either in the draft or through free agency. The 18 game schedule is going to challenge GMs and HCs with roster and player management. It might make the difference between winning a championship or not that first year.
Not to change the subject, but is the thread title supposed to read, "inevitable" instead of enviable? It's really bothering me. lol
When I look at teams with multiple early picks I see Jones as having the most value for a potential trade down. He's the guy I'm hoping is there so SD, NE, maybe DEN will have a big incentive to dial us up for a trade.
I keep tellin some folks, the reason why you rarely seen him caught from behind, is because he gets a head start, lol..Kinda like the analogy of pressing down on the accelerator when you see the smoke.. I think eyes would be blown away because of the polar opposite of styles..
I disagree Blitz, I think you design offense inside out, especially when you dont have a QB... The offense has a chance to have very good balance with the talents of Marshall and Ingram on the field..
Personally, I doubt Jones will be there, but if he is, unless that deal includes a 1st next year, I'm taking Julio Jones no questions asked. I just don't see him getting past the Rams with all of their issues at WR. Just curious as to how you thought SD, Denver, and NE would be involved? Last I read, I thought Vincent Jackson wanted to stay, and Denver drafted Demaryius Thomas and Brandon Lloyd had a breakout season for them. New England I could see, but I'm not sure I'd want to help out a division rival unless they'd be giving up a 1st and 2nd this year, plus another pick in 2012.
I like Ingram but the more I look at him... He isn't that big, strong or fast. What exactly would he bring to the table that would entice Ireland? If Julio Jones or AJ Green are there, how do you pass them up? Ireland already said he wants size AND speed...
While he's not going to be the homerun hitter that a guy like Adrian Peterson or Chris Johnson will be, he's going to be able to grind out carries and yards for you. As Boomer wrote in the draft winds, a college coach/scout told him Ingram is the type of guy that gets you 5, 5, 8, then 20, 5, 5, then busts a 60 yard screen on you. He's got excellent short area quickness, his 1.53 10 yard split was faster than the all 3 of the RBs who turned in the fastest 40 yard times, which is nice. He's also got excellent balance and agility and doesn't go down that easily, and hits the hole hard and fast, which is something Ronnie Brown hasn't done, and something Ricky Williams can't do any more. He's a solid player who can get you 300+ touches a year a la Peyton Hillis in Brian Daboll's Browns offense from 2010. He did his work in the SEC and ran through some very good defenses in his career. I think he's pro-ready, and a very safe pick.
SD falls into a similar category as NE. Their QB needs more weapons even though he performed very well with what he had. Their leading receiver was RB Sproles. They did tag both Jackson and Floyd but Jackson could be trade bait given their GMs indication that a long term deal was not likely. I see a Jackson trade as likely. Gates (will be 31) has his foot injury problem again and Floyd is not reliable enough to be more than a 3 or 4. Thomas recently tore his Achilles's tendon which makes DEN possibility. NE with so many picks should be looking for impact players for Brady. That band of misfits they had last year statistically did well but vs NYJ they were simply manhandled. Same thing vs BAL in 2009. I'm not worried about trading in the division with NE given their track record of drafting. All I have to say since its off topic.
Thats right. Being a great player requires a player to be on the field as #1 on the how to be great list.
I look at him as an upgrade, and someone that might be able to instill some intangibles I like...I do believe he's very close to the end, but I will hope his body recovers for a spurt in life.
I dont buy into that. I think he'd be better than anyone on our roster to build an offense around. Brown is good but can't be relied on to play all season.
I would as well. But, sadly, I feel like if the front office really wanted Shockey, they would have signed him already. And as soon as I typed that, padre starts the thread that Shockey signed with the Panthers. Dang.
Lol. Trent Richardson is no slouch either. Some of the strongest legs I've seen in a long time. Saban has the best backs money can buy...
Shockey from 4-5 yrs ago sure, but this version? I wouldnt sign him until I exhausted all other avenues.
Disagree with that GMJ, Shockey is pretty much the same player he was 4 yrs ago from a production standpoint, and he is a proven commodity, he would have solved the #2 Te problem and given Henne a legit safety blanket. Now we are down to Draftees, Street FA's, or Epps/Mastrud/Shuler, I wanted Shockey to put one more question to bed on offense.
I was at UF when Emmitt Smith signed with the Gators. I had never seen him play before, but I looked at his physical stature and 40 time and said almost the exact same thing you just posted.
i meant between ronnie and Ingram, to see how Ingram hits a hole compared to what we've grown accustomed to with ronnie would be quite the contrast.
Now that Owen Daniels signed for 4 years, all that's left at TE is Zach Miller or the draft IIRC. It'll suck if we have some monopoly money left over come FA but have no hotels left to dump it on. lol
That's the point Deej...we really can answer that better once the clock is started on the draft. Will they find a partner to trade down with (most definitely Irish's MO is to get back that missing 2nd round pick) ?? Will Ingram even be there ?? Will Green or Jones possibly be there ?? What about one of the top Safties ?? It's just guessing at this point, but without know who else is on the board, how can we say that Ingram is "the best choice".... For a point of reference, I'm on the Ingram bandwagon as I don't see either RW or RB back with us but what will FA bring us...if the CBA is resolved and FA begins, that probably will change the nature of our needs in the draft.

^^^^^ As good as any if JJ is gone. Why use our best pick to take a position that any number of FAs or second tier players can fill. We have no O-line worth a dang and that is where we should set our sights imho. Unless JJ is still on the board, one can not coach speed, we need it bad!
While I would love to see the Dolphins draft Ingram or one of the top receivers in the draft. I think they have a far greater need on the offensive line in the first round. If they draft Ingram and don't improve the offensive line, he won't have any running room to begin with. Of course the Dolphins greatest need is at the QB position but this draft is weak in regards to QB's in the first round. So hopefully the Dolphins can pick up a veteran QB in free agency and use a middle to late round pick on a young QB. My vote is no on Ingram and yes to an offensive lineman in the first round.
