It actually is news, because the NFL had the option of imposing non-collectively bargained league rules. Would have strengthened the not-union’s case of collusion, but they could have done it.

it's such a shame. they couldn't care less about NFL fans. once they inevitably solve issues and hammer out a new CBA, the fans will be so ready to go back to football that it will be easy to forget what they put us through. No one is going to want to think about it, everyone will just try to forget asap to block out the bad memories. and the nfl and nflpa know this. i doubt many fans will hold a long-lasting grudge that will manifest itself into opting against buying tickets or merchandise because of a "hey remember when they had that stupid lockout" thought.

the only way this hurts them is for actual games not played until they figure it out. those tickets sales won't come back, but as soon as they are available again, people will start buying them again.

I'd love to see fans completely lock out the games and instead watch them at a local bar or on Direct TV with 50 people sharing the price of one Sunday Ticket to keep the profit down. IMO it'd be hilarious to see a game played with not a single fan in the stadium. Basically, I'd like to see the owners in their fancy press boxes, bent over, ankles clinched by fists.......... (especially J Lo)

Unfortunately that wouldn't solve the problem. The NFL is a unique entity in that it the majority of it's revenue comes from the TV deals and as compared to its gate receipts. Any of the other sports you would cripple by boycotting the game, because you are directly taking large chunks of money from their pocket. The best way to hurt the NFL is a complete boycott and decline in TV ratings.

I'd like to see the owners tell the coaches to change players positions. Seeing Tom Brady playing NT with the look of death in his eyes would be priceless.

I figured Tom Brady would be used to getting down into a 3 point stance, and could probably transition nicely.

I couldn't agree more penn. The greed is sickening. Honestly, I think the whole thing needs to implode for these guys (the NFLPA and the NFL) to get that they can't keep bilking fans for more and more money just to watch a game. :pity:

What they deserve is to be overtaken by baseball but that's not going to happen unfortunately. They obviously think they're untouchable, what happened to MLB and NHL from their work stoppages couldn't happen to the mighty NFL. I hope they're wrong because they all deserve to pay a price for this. They've known this was coming for a long time, they have let their rabid fanbase down in a huge way.

Now would be the perfect time to introduce a playoff system for College Football and pickup all of the fed up fans. As a state employee who has not sniffed a raise in the past 3 years as my costs of life continue to increase, listening to these out of touch, financially secured blowhards whine about money, my weekends will be spent watching College ball on Saturday and Nascar on Sunday.

Couldn't some teams still allow players in the facilities theoretically? Say Ross could care less about the money and wants his players ready. Would he be able to not participate in the lockout?

Eventually unions always ruin everything. I remember when tickets to a game cost $12. Oh what a mess they have made out of the greatest sport ever.

Exactly but this way we get to see him do it on every play and we also get to see him on the bottom of every pile. For at least 3-4 plays until he quits.. :)

I remember tickets costing $8, wow, that was a long time ago, now look at it. Some greedy unions ruin everything. That's what ruined our economy. Unions seized control of the whole of industry and priced themselves out of sight with their greedy demands.

Don't know that id lay this at the unions feet personally.

I've been an advocate of the owners overall. If GB is any indication of their fiscal position, making 20 then 10 million in profit over the last 2 years then I fall in line with them. HOWEVER.....I cant support them because they won't open their damn books. I have a sneaky feeling that these owners are full of ****, and are rolling in dough. If they really are making 10-20 million on a 1 billion dollar team...then fine. Open the books, people will se, and they could work out a fiscally feasible agreement with the players.

But they won't....we and the players are supposed to trust the owners that they have money problems. Just like Florida trusted the shady assed Marlins and built them a new stadium, etc. Etc. Etc.

The whole thug sucks, but I'm out of my original position for the time being.

Why would having baseball overtake football help?
Same model, same greed, just a different sport.

It would serve all pro sports if college athletics took over all the ratings for all sports or if large chunks of fans stopped watching all of them collectively truly affecting TV ratings. They would then realize the very fan bases they continue to rape and pillage are in fact what makes their million dollar salaries possible.

I get so sick of hearing players and owners responses that the economy has no bearing on what they demand in contracts. That none of this gets passed down to the avg. fan. The problem is that a large portion of the idiotic public actually buys into it. Meanwhile the avg. fan cannot attend a game with rising ticket prices and large percentages of stadiums now being "special" increased rate seating or seat leases, increases in merchandise pricing, increases in TV programming fees, taxes passed down to consumers to pay for the office space these idiots play in, etc. It's horsecrap! People need to wake up.

Supporting the NCAA cartel is by far the worst thing one could do to “get back” at the NFL.

Not sure that it's the avg. Joe to blame here either. I LOVE football, and have paid to go to 1 game in my entire life. I've been to 4 or 5.....by way of corporations.

Businesses, and the rich are pricing out average people. I don't buy tickets because they're too damn expensive. Doubt many on the board here are driving it up personally, but I bet most of them work or have worked for someone who is.

Not saying the avg. Joe is at fault for the mess.
The avg. Joe is the victim however.
I'm just saying that the average fan seems not to even realize how much BS they are given and just like in politics the avg. person eats the Shizz sandwich without questioning.

What business would 'open their books' to the employees ?? The players didn't come to the owners and say " Hey, put up your money and we'll start this business!" They aren't the owners partners. No business opens their books to the employees or to the public. I could care less how Jones or Ross spend their money so long as I like the products on the field, and I do. I have no sympathy for the wealthy players, who's salaries START at $325,000 per year. The players have never budged on their original demands and that last offer by the owners proved that fact. What did they do, they didn't even look at it and started the litigation process. F___ them and the horse they rode in on...

Players: You guys open your books or will will no longer be a union and we're going to sue you unless you meet all our demands. Us players continue to get over 600 million dollars more than you owners and the owners shall be responsible for the folowing. Fix your own stadiums, pay the rent, light bills, organization payrolls, and we'll sign on the dotted line. Oh and one more thing. You also dish out the funds for health care......

    Owners: **** Off

I'll never fault the owners on this. Both parties are greedy mofos and it's a shame that the fans have to suffer..

Only this is not the unions fault. Its the owners, but of course the brainwashed Americans blame everything on unions. Not realizing if it was not for unions and the union movement, they would still be working a 60+ hour workweek without over time pay, and working on most of the national holidays we have now, and not have the standard 2 week paid vacation. I'm sure most of you guys would love to work under the conditions most factory workers had in the late 1800's.

And before the players had a union the owners didn't even give them a living wage or pay for any health insurance. Most players until the early 1980's actually worked a 2nd job in the offseason, and most of the time it paid them more than their football job did.

Owners: Hey we were happy enough with the last CBA ... but we want more money back cause we don't make enough. Oh by the way we started prepping for this years ago.
Players: You need more money? Show us and we will talk.
Owners: Nah, we don't think so.
    Players: Decertified!
    Owners: Locked out!

Both sides are at fault here folks. The owner's are very much culpable in this - it was their idea to head down this road to begin with.

False premise. They weren’t happy with it. The owners thought Tagliabue bent over for Upshaw because he was retiring and wanted a new CBA as his legacy.

Florida built the Marlins a stadium ? Really when did the State of Florida put a dime into the Marlins ? And what is wrong with the Marlins ? Their books were shown earlier this year and it proved that the Marlins weren't making much of a profit. Only one season so far in the last 3 or 4 did they show a decent profit. And why would you be against an owner making a profit ? By the way, the Marlins made $ 6 million last year.....they are sooooo rolling in dough.

    What a joke

I wish there was a manner for the fans to send a strong message to both sides. We are not a union, and we are probably fragmented in opinion, but I think something is warranted that sends a shot across their collective bow.

Yea Ozzy. Is right on this one. The Maroons were able to get. So much of their stadium publically funded by saying they operated close to or in the red. Turns out they were very much in the black.

The OWNERS opted out of the CBA 2 yeas ago. The OWNERS haven't been willing to negotiate until this year. The OWNERS said they're having financial hardship yet aren't willing the prove it, the OWNERS told they players to take a pay cut.

The PLAYERS said "Screw that, if you want us to take a pay cut PROVE you're in financial distress"

They didn't. So the players said they're not willing to take a pay cut.

And you need to quit looking at Football teams as if they're brick and mortar businesses. That's not the case at all. They essentially run a legal monopoly and get huge tax breaks and perks from the public. While they're under not LEGAL obligation to disclose their financial information I have NO problem with their employee's balking at taking a cut in the revenue when the owners refuse to show anything indicating that they're in financial distress. If my boss came in and told me to take a pay cut I'd tell him the same damn thing the players are saying. Prove that you need me to take a cut and we'll talk.
