Wow Cam Newton has dropped down to #26 on this ranking. I wonder if Cam will be sitting around squirming like Brady Quinn on draft day, waiting a long time for his name to be called?
There are roughly 5 teams in the top ten who need QBs. Newton is going early. Vince Young is not all that talented. He’s also mentally unbalanced.
Really? Vince Young is not all that talented? Interesting. Newton will probably be taken higher than he should but after Gabbert. Newton is a high risk/high reward player, bottom line.
Well, if Young really isn't all that talented, then neither is Cam Newton since they have essentially the same skill set, strengths, and weaknesses. In fact, Vince's passing metrics at Texas were actually better than Cam's at Auburn.
No, that’s an honest evaluation. You get pretty touchy about your quarterbacks, I’ve noticed. Tebow, Young, now Newton. The irony is that I agreed with you about Tim Tebow.
I don't think that it's a question about touchy- I just, with all do respect, don't see how anyone can say that Vince Young isn't all that talented. He does have issues galore but dude is talented. I wasn't all that big a fan of Young- I much preferred Jay Cutler that year and would have taken Matt Leinart over him as well. Cam Newton- dude is a big risk imo and I think that he's a lower half of the 1st rd guy. And I would indeed take Ponder over Newton. Newton has a LOT to prove, especially given that he's a 1 year wonder. If he was available at #15 I'd probably pass. Locker would concern me there, too. Still like Dalton as a 2nd/3rd rd guy and I do like Scott Tolzien as a mid/later rd guy. Ponder is a guy, if he medically checks out, that you imo take at #15 or trade down in the 1st, pick up a 2nd, and take Ponder late 1st and maybe a Pouncy, Wisniewski, or Marcus Cannon in the 2nd, depending on who might slip a bit. Still intrigued by Gabe Carimi, can't get that out of my head.
I don’t view him as a particularly gifted quarterback. Great athlete, mediocre quarterback. And since quarterback is just as much a mental position as a physical position, having great athletic gifts isn’t enough. Cam Newton showed more aptitude as a quarterback—not just a passer or an athlete, but as a quarterback—in one season than Young did in his entire NCAA career. JMO.
1. Vince Young is talented. 2. Cam Newton is talented. 3. "Cam Newton = Vince Young" is lazy thinking. All three thoughts can coexist without contradiction
