''Ex-pro scout Dave Razzano hears from "key" personnel people in the NFL that Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick is "inching into the late first round."
Kaepernick "has some rare qualities for a quarterback," according to Razzano. Razzano tends to be a bit wild in his evaluations -- same as most current and ex-NFL scouts -- but it's worth noting that this feeling has been echoed by Doug Farrar of Football Outsiders. Kaepernick is also Russ Lande of the Sporting News' No. 2 QB in the draft, behind Blaine Gabbert. We know that the Titans sent a large contingent to Kaepernick's Tuesday private workout.

Kid was 36 out of 38 at his proday.. exactly what your supposed to do..

According to ProFootballTalk, Kaepernick completed 36 of 38 passes in his workout. Kaepernick, who is viewed by draft analysts as a project QB, has been working on his deep ball accuracy, shortening his wind up and making his drops quicker. Some now think he could be a second-round prospect.
According to the Reno Gazette Journal, Kapernick had a private workout with 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh last week. He also has 10 private workouts/pre-draft visits set up with NFL clubs according to his agent.

Sources say that Jim Harbaugh is very interested in the player, has met with him twice personally.

Sources say he displayed great touch and accuracy, with a rifle of an arm..Higher velocity than anyone in this draft..

These reports just continue to give some validity to some of our projections on the player.. Man I hope we can get him in the 2nd, but iam not to sure. This draft is gonna kill me man..

6'5..233...runs a 4.5, strongest arm in the draft, reports on frail frame are false, completely mobile in every sense, escapability talent, very smart, very hungry, very coachable, leader, scrambler who looks to pass first, keeps head up on the move, player who when he decides to run the football ATTACKS the los, will take it upfield with no wasted movement and all purpose, will take on contact if necessary tp pick up extra yards, shows toughness and instincts for the position..Dolphins have met with the QB on 3 different occasions.

Negs..got a hitch in his swing, and came from the pistol...

I'm not opposed, but I don't think this guys gonna beat Henne in his rookie season, especially since he's coming from the pistol. Most Shotgun/pistol guys need awhile to adjust to being under center.

thats fine...dont underestimate this kid though, he will push anyone if front of him..To me hes the kind of player you want to throw into the fire, hes very much an instinctual player with great improvisational skills,I dont want to take those things away from him, and make him mechanical..he'll be fine in the fire if thats the case.

It would help if we knew what kind of offense we are employing. CKap would blow in last year's Henning's offense.

I don't care about what a QB prospect can do the first year. I think its unreasonable to expect any QB to come in and start year one. There's been a few success stories where young QBs have been decent while protected by a strong running game, but those are the exception. And really they weren't even as good as I'd expect Henne to play under a better system.

thats so tru Rob...CK made a good point the other day about while everything kind of looks like we will run this hybrid type offense and covet the athletic QB, however, the theory that Daball wanted to sign Jake delhomme, and the fact of what type of systems he comes from, and the type of QB's and coordinators he's worked with, screams pocket passer, thus putting Mallett more on our radar...

There sure are a lot of variables that conflict with what theory I just mentioned including right after the season when Sparano made indicting comments about what he desires for the position..Ive got to feel that with this regimes history with a multidimensional offense, and the offense and players daboll worked with in cleveland, its seems to really favor the athletic QB, which imo, Ckap is the one with the most upside..

Nah, that's the great part of being a fan. You get to just throw random names out there w/o any regard for system & personnel compatibility, learning curve, etc. Fun stuff.

I can see why you'd like him, but IMO he's a guy that wont be ready until year 3 or 4, and I don't see the Miami fans or management waiting that long. Henne just finished his 3rd year and most fans are calling him a bust. I just dont know if the patience required to develop a QB exists down here.

The only way this happens is through trade. Look at the teams in the bottom of the first:

    26. Baltimore
    27. Atlanta
    28. New England
    29. Chicago
    30. NY Jets
    31. Pittsburgh
    32. Green Bay

Not a single one of these teams will draft a quarterback.

QBs lately are coming in and starting right away, and while they certainly aren't world beaters season 1, they are doing ok.

Unlikely, but considering it will likely take several years before he sees the field, maybe the Pats use one of their picks on him as a developmental prospect while Brady winds down for the next 2-3-4 years. Would be similar to the Favre/Rogers situation, though personally I'm not a fan of Kap at all.

only thing i'll disagree with that statement is that he doesn't have good size and speed, he has ''great'' size and speed..kid is much bigger than people think, boy's been in the gym, unlike Mr. Mallett..

Not world beaters and not even better than Henne was last year in a crappy system. And those are still the exceptions. So despite fans perceptions being skewed by their short term memories, the odds of any rookie coming in and giving the team a better chance to win year 1 is still very low.

The majority of your "pros" for him have to do with scrambling and running. The only aspect his passing that you mentioned is that he has a strong arm.

How is he at throwing touch passes? Accuracy? Reading defense and going through progressions?

All of those are more important qualities than any of the ones you listed. Those are the qualities I care about...

That's a matter of debate, which is why you probably have some who have him in the late first and some who don't. Personally, I see his accuracy as at least good. When he has a clean pocket, I would call it great. He's also accurate while throwing on the run. When you consider distance, there is some variation. He is good to great on passes of about 20 yards (completions, not raw distance) or less. His accuracy is poor on longer passes. The same with his touch. As for reading defenses and going through progressions, I would guess he's at least average. Throughout the year his coach was often praising him for his reads. I think the offense primarily called for pre-snap reads like most college systems. He seems to be smart and I believe his Wonderlic reflected that. I don't think he was asked to go through progressions much at UNR. Although it seemed to me that he did go through his progressions in the Senior Bowl which would indicate either that he did it more than I recall at UNR or he's a quick study. My main issue with him is that he often takes a long stride (think pitcher) when he throws. I'm not sure if he needs to or if its a fixable habit. I am encouraged that he throws so well on the run though b/c he doesn't use that long stride on those passes. That could indicate that its fixable. Also he seems to be a very good athlete. I find that QBs who are very good athletes have an easier time making/learning adjustments that deal with the lower half of their bodies than those who aren't.

Just to add what Raf's said.

Touch...He does have it Nasty, Hes got arm talent, arm athleticism, he can throw from different variations...when I watch all his reps on screens, bubbles and seam routes, his ball is usually in nice position for the receiver, you can see his aim more clearly than others, puts it with the right amount of lead and velocity on the short stuff, he can take some off the ball when necessary so that the ball is catchable and he's not one way with his motion and trajectory like Henne..

Accuracy...I believe the Player has natural accuracy, its in his DNA, He has a very nice finish towards his target, the follow thru is everything when it comes to accuracy, and his combined with his outstanding athleticism, is why iam truly excited about the player, this is not a run first mentality type kid were talking about here, he loves to throw the football, and is not shy on any throw, and, when he does decide to run, he's outstanding..

reading defenses...Its hard to tell because of the offense, just as hard as it is for most of the guys in this draft, but I'll tell ya this, there are instincts there that I trust when he plays the game, he does'nt make a lot of mistakes in coverage, and has the feet to buy himself time to reset and deliver.. did not come close to double digit int's all four years.

well JS, I and a few others have been pimpin this kid from the get, and all his stock does is continue to rise, your 5th round projection is outdated, and incorrect imo when it comes to where his skillset deserves to be drafted.

I personally believe this Kaepernick following is an exercise in polishing that will result in a product that's still not gold. My biggest qualm with him is he doesn't throw like a passer. He throws like a thrower, which was one of Pat White's biggest flaws IIRC. He just pushes the ball out of his hand. Playing in the WAC is a QB's dream. This kid has shown little statistical improvement from his first year to his last...in the WAC. Straight line max speed means nothing for a QB. This guy isn't agile. He's lanky and just seems labored in his movements. Scouts have been wrong about many people so I don't buy the line that scouts think he's up there. It's an argument from authority fallacy. In the words of a 2-bit Bills troll, "he doesn't pass the eye test".

Definitely. Kapernick can be considered gold, but it's not real gold. It's fools gold. The athleticism and arm strength intrigue many, but the pure passing skills simply aren't there. Elite quarterbacks tend to not feast on the weak sisters of the poor and play well against stronger competition. Here's a big red flag to Colin Kaepernick:

Against teams with losing records in FBS/FCS, Kaepernick had a 69.1% completion percentage, 16 touchdown passes, and 2 interceptions.

Against teams with winning records in FBS, Kaepernick had a 58.6% completion percentage, 5 touchdown passes, and 6 interceptions. Against losing teams, he threw a TD pass every 13.4 pass attempts. Against winning teams, he threw a touchdown pass every 29.0 passing attempts.

The most comparable player for Colin Kaepernick? Former San Diego State quarterback Kevin O'Connell.

Credit goes to RC Fischer for the stats.

I love how some just give their opinion like hes a total failure already, lol, ya'll better check yourselves in your absolute tone...if you hadn't noticed, people, nfl scouts, good sources, are talking about the player goin in the first, solid 2nd, only confirming some of the things that few of us projected would happen..If he's so bad, like you all make him out to be, were not having this conversation about his rising draft stock..

From what ive read, seen, and heard, the kid demands respect...

These are the same NFL scouts who have about a 27% hit rate when it comes to drafting first round quarterbacks. The same NFL scouts that think Cam Newton should go in the top 5 picks of this draft. The same NFL scouts that thought Vince Young was a first round quarterback prospect and Tom Brady was a 6th round prospect.

No matter where he's taken, it doesn't mean a thing until he does something in an NFL game. See the following: Russell, Quinn, Leaf, Klingler, Ware, Beck, Edwards, etc. and so on.

Not saying he's a 5th round pick, I just have a tough time seeing how his game translates well to the NFL, ESPECIALLY if he's pressed into action from the get-go. I doubt it'd be pretty.

Generally saying "I believe" means that it's what I believe. Had I said "I know", that would apply here. That's the beauty of debate and opinion. Two people looking at the same thing but seeing different things. Someone will be proven wrong but until then, I don't see the point in pushing the word of anonymous scouts as gospel while breaking another's down as solely prognostication. All of us are prognosticating at this point. It's just, in a philosophical way, funny how we can make a distinction between what we look at and what we see.

You know what's ironic------ if you combine two of these colossal fart stains, Quinn and Leaf......... you get Queaf (which is close enough in IMO).

Or you could take it one further with Klingler........ and get Queafler. Not sure why but that makes me lol.

That's one thing I question about your analysis. I've certainly seen him make many people miss while at UNR. The question becomes whether he was just able to do that against lesser competition. The reports from the Senior Bowl practices were that he was unstoppable even when they knew it was coming. This would have been against top level senior talent and it suggests that he was agile enough even against the best college players. I think everybody saw him fail to elude Miller during the game and projects that that would happen against everybody. I have a pretty high opinion of Miller so I see that as the exception rather than the rule. I'd actually give Miller the advantage against even the most mobile QBs like Vick and Rodgers.

I am a Nevada Wolfpack Alumni and without a doubt he is the best player Nevada has ever had. It would be awesome to see him in a Dolphin uniform. If he can shorten his windup he has all the tools to be a top notch QB in the NFL.

His ability to role outside of the pocket and throw against his body reminds me of Elway. He continues to look for his receivers down the field before taking off. A flick of the wrist and the ball whistles down field. He will also make crucial plays with his feet when needed.

IMO he would be a big upgrade over Henne. Having said all that, I still can't see Miami spending their top pick on a QB given the needs at RB and the OL.

NFL.com's Gil Brant reports that Kaepernick was "very impressive" in front of officials from 26 teams, and confirms Kaepernick has established himself as a "high-round draft prospect." Russ Lande of the Sporting News has Kaepernick rated as the No. 2 quarterback in the draft, behind only Blaine Gabbert. We have him teetering between the Seahawks at No. 25 and Bills at No. 34..

NFL Network's Albert Breer is the latest to suggest that Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick could "merit late first-round consideration" in April's draft.
Kaepernick's combo of athleticism, size, and arm strength is as intriguing as any quarterback in the 2011 class. According to Breer, Kaepernick could wind up being drafted "even before (Jake) Locker or (Ryan) Mallett." Kaepernick is much cleaner than Mallett off the field and more accurate than Locker on it..

    respect..

Great, I really hope we take him! :) Now I even think, if we trade down, we should take him in the first round and not the second. If we don't trade down, I don't know if we'd take him at 15. Personally, I guess I would. DON'T LET HIM GO TO BUFFALO!
