Just more speculation, but there was a comment on there about a trade scenario in reader comments. Our #15 for Carson Palmer and the #35 overall pick. To me, thats a smoking deal. To the Bengals and Mike Brown, who knows. They may want a later pick as well. I would do this deal..... http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/04/06/more-talk-of-carson-palmer-to-the-dolphins/
Why would you do this deal? He can be had for much less if the Bengals aren't stupid. Either Palmer retires or they get a 3rd (max) for him. I would seriously reconsider my confidence in Ireland if they pull this one off.
If Ireland pulls this one off, I shall be in awe of his skills. ... given that players can't be traded until a new CBA is reached.
We'd all make that deal. Unfortunately, Mike Brown won't. He's content to have Palmer retire rather than trade him. Yes, he's that stubborn (stupid).
I'd be fine with this deal but Armando is apparently the source so there goes everything out the window.
If you read what his sources say, “Carson’s pretty good,” or, “I like Carson,” or, “It’s one of our what-ifs.” They did not really say anything.
Carson Palmer would be a great pick up. One, it would give us a solid QB to lead this young team. Two, Henne could learn under the tutelage of Palmer (should he be around to learn). I would certainly give up a third for him. If we had a second, I'd do give that up too. A first? Hmmm...in this years draft...maybe - if the Bengals would throw in a little more to spice up the deal. We could re-sign Ronnie, and/or Ricky and add a young guy - find a deep threat, and with the defense we have, we'd be solid as hell with Palmer. Just my opinion.
Agreed, he is not going to open the door to allow other players to follow suit. Brown is about the most stubborn owner in the NFL. Palmer is either a Bengal or retired this season. Tough to speculate on player trades anyway since currently they are impossible. May change after the hearings, but we will see.
It's actually a pretty good deal. You would need to add a guard, a RB like DeAngelo Williams, a third round RB, and a free agent speedster. Overall though you'd be ready to compete. QB- Palmer RB- Williams WR1- Marshall WR- Hartline WR- Bess TE- Fasano LT- Long LG- (we'll see who remains at the top of the 2nd) C- Incognito RG- Jerry RT- Carey Not a bad group led by a still solid veteran who can the run PA the way Sparano wants it to be run.
Dude is probably still a solid player. I think if the point is winning regular season games, you make this deal with the #15, if there was a CBA that is. If the point is winning playoff games, you do not trade that #15 for Palmer, you trade a lower one. Maybe trade back, recoup the second, send that. This is all if there was a CBA. I'd hate for us to get Palmer, have a few 9-7, 11-5 seasons and not be able to actually get a better QB in the draft because we're picking #20 every year.
sounds like the dolphins in the early 2000s, always good enough to compete, never bad enough to become elite.
Depends who is available at 15. If there is a QB they really like, then I'm not sure they would pull the trigger.
Everybody said Carl Peterson was the most stubborn GM and we got a 2nd rounder out of KC for Pat Surtain. Years later we only had to give up a 5th rounder for Trent Green. I think a 3rd rounder would get it done. Besides, the guy has been pretty average since his injury. Dude threw 20 picks last year.
I'm warming up to the idea...... I need to know more about Carson's elbow But as I've said before like others.... Mike Brown will hold him hostage out of spite.
Our front office seems too confident in Henne to give up a 1st for another QB to compete. That includes drafting a QB in the first as well. I just feel like they realize that Henne doesn't have much of a supporting cast and he deserves one shot. In all honesty, I can only see them bringing in a mid-late round pick or a cheap free agent to compete.
He stonewalled Chad Ochocinco's trade demands even with Washington offering 2 first rounders if I recall. This is not the first time he has put his feet down. You expect that Palmer buying a house in Cali is going to make him suddenly fall over himself to get a second rounder? GM Peterson trading players is not the same thing as an owner making a statement - he does not want to open a door.
Thank you! From living in Ohio, I saw more than enough of Palmer to see that he has more than just, possibly, elbow issues to contend with. It goes beyond any possible physical issues with him.
What if Palmer does retire? I mean, assuming the stand off lasts until the season starts (and, further assuming there even is a season), can he be signed as a FA then? If so, that's the way to go IMO. No picks given up, sign him to an incentive laden deal = win/win.
This was the exact trade idea I proposed here months ago. While I'd rather also grab a 4th round pick or something, I'd probably still go for the deal. And I say this as a regular defender of Chad Henne. At #35, you're still looking at a ton of value in places we could certainly use it. If Ingram truly does slip out of the 1st, he could be there. If not, you still might have LeShoure sitting there. The top of the 2nd also looks like a great area to address the offensive line. And don't count out receiver. I expect Green and Jones to go in the top fifteen, but I'm not sure any other receiver will go in the 1st. So we would have our pick of a very talented second tier of receivers, including Hankerson, Young, Baldwin, etc . . .
Holding players hostage that don't want to play for you when you can be comped good value. It's just one of the many variables that make that organization the steaming coil it is. Just ask any Bengals fan.
Not to mention extending Lewis at the end of last season, after a 4-12 season. He of a .469 career winning percentage and only two winning seasons in the past eight years.
Lewis has done a pretty good job considering what he has to deal with in the front office. Maybe if Mike Brown didn't always get involved in the football side of things and would pay for a scouting department, Lewis wouldn't have a below .500 winning percentage.
this is the deal to make. have been in favor of Carson Palmer (posted several times) since before the end of last season as a solution to QB in Miami
I believe the team holds the rights to Palmer when he retires under contract, so even if he retires he can not become a FA until his contract is up. i.e The Barry sanders situation in Detroit.
I was hoping someone would reply with some insight on this. Thanks Hellion. So, let me ask this then...what about when Junior Seau retired (as a Dolphin), only to turn right around and sign with the Patsies? How did that happen? EDIT: Was it as simple as his contract was up???
How is an older QB, who has never been the same since his injury, the "solution" to anything Dolphins related?
In this scenario you're basically valuing Palmer at the price of dropping from 15 to 35. Looking at the Draft Value Chart (It's not perfect, but still), that equates to a value of 500 points, or essentially a high second round pick (40th overall to be exact). I personally think that's too much, as I value Carson at around a 3rd round pick. However, if you're Ireland and Carson is worth a 2nd rounder, then yeah, I think you consider it.
