With the 199th pick of the 2011 GML draft, the New England Patriots swing for the fences and select....

Running Back from Auburn, "Super" Mario Fannin.

This is about taking a flier on a guy we like here in the 7th round who has tremendous upside. He ran the fastest 40 time of any running back at the combine. So when you factor in his size at 230 pounds, and above average hands, you have to take notice. Unfortunately for him he never really produced in college to the degree that would warrant a high pick. But we think he can be a man of many hats in the Patriots offense. A little tailback, some tight end, some fullback. He fits into the rotation we have with Delanie Walker and Marcel Reece. But his primary position will be running back, backing up Danny Woodhead as our third down back. I compare Fannin to Arian Foster (who I liked coming out of college). A big back, with a second gear, who never really blossomed until the pros. I feel Fannin has that some chance.

Titans select Andrew Luck, QB, Stanford.

While he may not have entered the draft, the Titans also have no room to sign him. This is a lose/lose situation. It's more of a statement by GM GISH that Luck is his guy in 2012, and no one will get in his way.

    Dion Lewis, RB, Pitt!!!

Dion didn't have the best combine performance, but he had a better pro day by many accounts and wowed in the positional drills. We have little doubt with what we saw Dion do the past two years that he won't be able to find a productive place on our team, and make many GMs in the NFL regret not picking him themselves.

Only started one full season for the Sooners, at right tackle. A former tight end. At 6-6 300 pounds, we feel he has a great frame and athletic ability to develop into a starting NFL tackle. We also love his intangibles - his smarts and leadership ability. A typical Patriot lineman down the road. Certainly a project, but we feel he will work hard to make the team and contribute. Could also be used as a 3rd tackle in goal line situations due to the receiving option he brings.

    Aldrick Robinson, WR, SMU!!!

Much like Dion Lewis, we like Aldrick too much to allow him to slip past us and possibly be selected elsewhere, or chance getting outbid for him as a UDFA. While we already selected two WRs earlier in the draft, given the departure of Jackson and Floyd, we feel it is important to add as many talented WRs to the mix as possible (within reason) to give Rivers as much a chance at success in the future as he has had in the past.

Aldrick finished 2010 with a strong senior year (65 rec, 1,301 yds, 20ypc, 14 TDs), closing the books on a very strong career at SMU where he caught over 3,000 yards and 30 Tds. He carried that over to the combine and his pro day where he put up exceptional numbers. His statistics and workout numbers strongly mirror those of former teammate and 2010 3rd round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Emmanuel Sanders. Frankly with how much Robinson's #'s paralled (both statistical and workout) we're surprised (but extremely grateful) that Aldrick is rated as low as he is. We feel he is more talented than many of the WRs that have come off the board since the 5th rd (and possibly earlier). Our confidence that Aldrick will be able to perform for us in various forms (return duty and WR work) is backed up not only by the success of Sanders, but the work ethic and character he seems do display, and that of which his coaches vouch for.
