Last year, Bell had 100 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 2 FF, 1 pick, and defended 5 passes.

He graded out as the #8 S on PFF but, that was based on being #2 rushing the QB, #13 vs the run, and being waay down the line in coverage.

When teams threw on him, he was lit up for over 70% completions, and 126 YAC, which his 11 missed tackles accounts for. He was absolute horrible in coverage, and is now 33 years old.

It's impossible not to like the guy. It's also impossible not to see his shortcomings. Should we be looking to replace him with Jones?

    Opinions?

He's not great in coverage, but I don't think he's as poor as people make him out to be. I wouldn't mind Jones stepping up and taking over the starting position, but at the same time thats something Jones will have to earn.

How do you argue with 70% completions, and missing 11 tackles? That's about as poor as ya can get in coverage for a S.

However, he does a lot of things for our D which have nothing to do with coverage. My main question is if that is enough?

I hopin our youngster is the real deal, if our team is gonna get better, him winning that position would go along way, Bell is what he is, an excellent run defender in the blood zone, and somewhat of a liability in coverage.. He's basically a linebacker in a safety's body..

For me, iam very excited to see reshad get first team reps..you wanna talk about flashing talent relative to rep count..He's up there, and thats a great sign.

he absolutely made 2 critical errors in the jet game to do his part to contribute to theloss, giving up the first TD to keller on the first drive, and letting LT run for a first down at the end of the game when he was in perfect position to make a tackle..not sure why he missed that tackle but it was gross.

What does the 70% completion exactly prove? He gave up 9.6 ypr, which was one of the best in the league.

He did miss 11 tackles, but he also made 86. As a percentage of his total tackles, his miss % was much better than guys like Adrian Wilson, Eric Berry, Ed Reed, Quintin Mikell, and Troy Polamalu, among others. So I don't really think that number is as poor as you can get in coverage. He certainly isn't very good, but he's not the liability people make him out to be.

You gotta understand that those missed tackles came on early in the year. I swear he had like four all alone in the first Jets game. He got better as the year went on. As Stringer said, if we can replace him with Jones, great but he has to earn it.

5 of his missed tackles came in the first two games. PFF gave him 2 @ BUF, and 3 @ MIN. They only credited him with 1 missed tackle against the NYJ.

That last line surprises me but I may be wrong then. I don't put much stock into PFF but I guess they're right.

Yeah, I don't put much into their ratings, but for things like missed tackles I think they're generally reliable. Missed tackles are a pretty subjective thing though, so they could be off.

I would confirm that he only missed one against the jets in the first game, it was a major miss, but in terms of missed tackles, thats about it.

Yeremiah will never be an all star, and i think we all know that. But the guy is above average and solid. With our FS position being what it is, and the overall youth of our secondary, Bell does a pretty good job given his obvious limitations in coverage (which i don't are as bad as they are made out to be). Yeremiah isn't gonna be a house hold name, but i think he's in the top half of the league. Here's hoping Jones beats him out for the position, but we aren't in the hole at SS like we are at FS.

i do believe RJ will be our SS by the end of the season ... as much as i believed Clemons would be our FS last year. i don't believe RJ has the speed to hold down FS .... It will be interesting to see if the kids, Amaya and Restelli, can bring anything to the table besides STs as well. Amaya might be able to push Clemons at FS.

Overall, we are in very good shape across our DBs ...
