Supposedly an HD console more powerful than the PS3 which will be announced within a month and shown at E3.

Destructoid has translated posts from a French source who describes the controller:

    And IGN chimes in.

There also may or may not be backwards compatibility with the Wii. I’d bet on “Hell no.”

Anyway, considering this is supposed to come out in 2012, being graphically better than the 360 and PS3 is not very impressive. If it’s better than PC hardware coming out over the next two years, then Nintendo will have something on its hands, especially if they can sell it for $300.

    Thoughts?

Given the money they've raked in over the past 5 years, they could certainly afford to bring out a beefy console at a reasonable price. I too agree that it won't be very impressive if it's only marginally better than the PS3/360, and I can only imagine they'd also use DVDs as a storage medium rather than blu-ray. Interestingly, if this comes out in 2012, this would be Nintendo's first console (I believe) that has come out more than 5 years after its predecessor since the SNES.

Much like the Wii though, if the software isn't there to support the hardware it'll too just become a dust collector/paper weight.

Agreed. Skyward Sword is the only reason I have yet to sell my Wii. Oh, and they’re cutting prices on the Wii soon, as well. Thanks, Nintendo, for screwing over my chance at making some money on eBay… and for not bringing out Xenoblade or The Last Story.

I haven't played my Wii in at least 8 months. I've been seriously considering buying a PS3. I probably still will because of MK (tied with SF for my favorite fighting series), GoW3, and a few other titles. If this new Nintendo system comes guns blazing at e3 then I certainly would consider holding out. If it can muster nexter (lol) gen graphics with a diverse game base, I'd be all for it. I just don't see me goign Nintendo just because. I have literally never missed a Nintendo console. From NES straight up to Wii. If this comes out with just slightly better hardware, I think I'd just hold out for the next Sony or Microsoft console. I'm rooting for Nintendo though. I want to keep playing the usual mascots (Zelda, Mario, Metroid), but I also want to be able to shoot people in the head right afterward online WITHOUT friend codes.

I hope this doesn't push back the new Zelda game. Even if I'm not real excited for it because it looks more like a gimmick to me....but its Zelda

    how do you mean that?

Live streaming of games like onlive? not this go around. Saves on the cloud? maybe but at this point I'm waiting for them to get a modern online system set up. Just count on Nintendo to be conservative in terms of services and hardware and you'll probably be right.

Also this controller of theirs sounds like a nightmare to hold, I'm really curious to see it at e3 but I'd not be surpised if it had a few redesigns after since there's so much time till launch. Extra controllers are gonna cost a pretty penny too with a 6" touch screen on it.

Not sure why it would. Nintendo pushed back Twilight Princess because they were porting it to the Wii, and didn’t want to launch with a 6+ month old game. Remember, the Wii was basically a Gamecube+ in terms of hardware. This new system is supposed to be leaps beyond.

    Nintendo hates the Internet.

Not really the same thing. They “hated” discs because they needed to present reasons why their format choice with the N64 was competitive or better than the PSX and Saturn’s CDs. They went right to optical the first chance they had via the Gamecube.

They went optical when the writing was on the wall with their format of choice.

With the importance of online play in today's market Nintendo would be fools to not create a viable online solution. Since it is Nintendo though, they might take things to a whole new level.

They went optical the first chance they had. Solid state storage is still in use today, if you hadn’t noticed…

Let’s look at their latest handiwork, the 3DS:

    1. No achievements.
    2. No centralized, matchmaking-style online play.
    3. No e-store, no web browser, nothing related to Internet communications available at launch.
    4. No unique online identity, just a universal friend code.

This is now going to suddenly change with the WiiII? I grant you that it’s possible, but the chances are remote. Nintendo’s true biases last for generations. Reggie Fils-Aime still hates RPGs, for example.

No, not really. The N64’s development was largely finished before CD-ROM drives became cheap enough to use in a console. Remember, the Playstation was born out of the SNES-CD concept, where Sony would supply CD-ROM drives to Nintendo at a cheaper rate for a cut of the profits. Nintendo axed the concept, went with the N64 plan, and Sony used its advantage of being able to manufacture CD-ROM drives to complete the SNES-CD concept and release it as the Playstation.

This is simply what they said publicly to defend against criticism of going with carts in a console released in 1996 despite CD-ROMs present in competitors released in 1994 and 1995.

Heres the latest specs from IGN:

Additionally, IGN has learned that the system will be based on a revamped version of AMD's R700 GPU architecture, not AMD's Fusion technology as previously believed, which will, as previously reported, out perform the PlayStation 3's NVIDIA 7800GTX-based processor. Like the Xbox 360, the system's CPU will be a custom-built triple-core IBM PowerPC chipset, but the clocking speeds will be faster. The system will support 1080p output with the potential for stereoscopic 3D as well, though it has not been determined whether that will be a staple feature.

Starting to sound to me like it’s an iterative but not significant improvement over the five year old hardware Sony and Microsoft are offering.

For what it’s worth, AMD’s R700 was released as the Radeon HD 4xxx line. The 4800 series was pretty damn good for its time, and I still use a 4850 X2 in my gaming PC. Nintendo seems to be building a faster Xbox 360.

It needs to deliver all games at 720p or better (preferably all at 1080p), which is not something PS3 and 360 do.

It’s true that a lot of games cheat on the 720p requirement, but officially, both consoles require at least 720p in games, so that’s not really going to resonate with the market.

Now, if Nintendo opens their E3 show with a video like this, then pans out to a simulated first person view of a person holding the new console’s controller with a screen running the same demo, and the console clearly visible… then they’re going to hit the home run they desperately need.

Nintendo is leaning toward calling the new console the Stream.

So, when you’re done at Project Cafe, you might play with your Wii, and then have to unleash a Stream.

    Nintendo… :pity:

At this point it's pretty obvious that nintendo is trolling us...

Personally I'm going to hold off on anymore predictions(lets see if I stick to that) till E3 cause there's alot of rumors and they can't all be true, remember on top on all this, the french site that got all the ngp info right also said there's another surpise coming.

1080p isn't a definite from what I read which should be a crime at this point in time.

If it's not a reasonable step up from the 360 or ps3, I won't get it.

Depends on the manner in which you want your 1080p. I’m sure the console will have support for 1080p, if rumors are to be believed. But making 1080p support in games mandatory? I don’t think even Microsoft and Sony are going that route with their next gen consoles. A bunch of games in this generation have to upscale or cheat on detail to hit 720p as is.

I am aware, which is why a console released 5 years after those shouldn't have to cheat. And I've read that the console won't for sure yet support 1080p at all, as Nintendo is still trying to determine whether they go with 1080p or 1080i as the resolution peak.

The AMD R700 line is pretty good, but not all-powerful. Look at it this way: Nintendo is using essentially the Xbox 360’s CPU and a GPU that’s already two generations outdated. Contrast that with Sony and Microsoft using GPUs that, at the time of their consoles’ release, were heavily modified versions of GPUs that had yet to be released publicly.

If the specs we’re hearing are true, then Nintendo is basically building a Dreamcast II: a system that’s in between the current generation and the next generation.

If it’s truly an HD console, then it’ll have 1080p output.

I don't believe everyone would follow that line of thinking (especially a company who just put out something that maxed out at 480p), as 720p is still HD.

Remember that the supposed goal is to reclaim the hardcore market. Going to be tough to do that if a console released six years after its competition can’t do 1080p.
