Would you trade back this morning?

Jimmy Johnson has been often criticized for trading back in 1998 and missing out on Randy Moss. But this trade was made the day before, and JJ has admitted that he would not have made the trade had he know Moss was going to slide that far.

So with the speculation that Ireland would like to trade down and get a second round pick, would you pull the trigger on a reasonable deal this morning without knowing who is left on the board or would you want and possibly loose a trade partner?

Personally I think there is enough talent to be found in the later part of the first and no particular most have prospect that could fall so I would do the deal this morning.

You don't make the move now. You just come to a handshake agreement.

This is what we did with the Chargers last year. If Ryan Mathews was there at 12, the deal would go down.

He was, and it did. :)

I'd have to have a whopping offer as this is our 5th Top 15 pick in the last 6 drafts and all we have to show for it is Jake Long and Odrick and Misi.

We need more impact out of these opportunities.

Gotta agree with Muck here. Even though I want to trade down in the worst possible way, you simply cannot predict what will happen. So, to fully commit to a trade before hand might be a little foolish IMHO.

agreed on a conditional or 'in principle' deal .... but there's 2 parts to the condition - the dude we want (if there is such a thing) isn't there, and the dude the other team wants is ...

Makes one wonder where we would be drafting without DBess, Wake, Carpenter et al, the non drafted guys who have played really well.

The reality is we were fighting to get back to being merely "pretty good" let alone contending yr after yr, with Ronnie B, Jason Allen, Ted Ginn all gone those misses with high picks come back to haunt us, and Odie being injured in 2010 does not help.

In some ways it is as if the prior and somewhat current front office types are a sales force that has underperformed for most of the last 6 yrs, we need more of a "perform dammit!" mentality then we have had previously and Ireland is the new sales manager in his first yr running the department.

THAT is why I'm opposed to taking Pouncey at #15..a Guard? Really? How often do they handle the ball?

Pads, is Pouncey worth the #15 pick -- i don't think you'll find many that say yes. Outside of Smith, i do think he is the pick though. Only because it's a win-win, if we can't work out an immediate trade with PIT. It solves an immediate need and potentially goes a long way to solving the OL shenannigans.

we've tried the RD3 and beyond picks and have gotten nowhere to date. could that change this year -- who knows, but judging on past performance -- doubtful.

we don't have a RD2 pick, so if it ain't RD1 - then we immediately default right back to failing again in RD3+.

IF we can't trade down or elect not to with someone like Smith, then we must get an immediate contributor. No QB we pick is that - and although i like Ingram, i personally don't value RBs all that high either -- unless you get an AP type that falls into your lap.

we have not spent (so it seems) much time or effort with the top Ts ... no RD1 TEs ... haven't spent much at all at DE ... and at DT Wilkerson and Luiget would be welcome additions - but not immediate impact players.

so, to me barring a Jones surprise, or Smith sitting there -- it's Pouncey from all indications, unless PIT coughs up a trade before we pick ... or we get some other 'better' offer to trade down. Most preferred of course, less Jones or Smith.

If the trade or handshake was made now instead of during the draft it would have to be for good value. If the right player slides during the draft to #15 that a team just has to have will get the most value and maybe better than average.
I just hope the opportunity happens so we don't have to sit on our hands until the 3rd round watching as all that talent passes us by.

This is what I mean by "perform dammit!" as we should not miss on solid #3 and #4 picks on offensive lineman, that should not happen.

Kris O'Dowd is a 4 yr starter at USC and would be a fine value in rd #3

Running Back fits a need, but is not BPA at #15 there will still be DE/DT's that will be BPA imho.

Nah, that is why they filled Soliai's pocket full of money so a DT is not a NEED at #15 that freed up our draft as for TE's there have not been many taken in Rd #1 in recent yrs, just Pettigrew and he was taken before we drafted in 09.

Do notice that the players we have been connected to, Pouncey, Kaepernick, have interest elsewhere around the NFL?

    Smoke screen baby.

    No.

Trading back is for teams which already have their franchise Quarterbacks.

Pads, but that's exactly why i think RDs 3, 4, 5 are our WR/RB type picks ... we've spent very little effort on DEs by all reports -- but MUCH effort on RD 1/2 SOLBs with speed off the edge, in addition to much effort on QB/RB. That's why @ 15, i keep defaulting to Smith - should he be there, and would be value at that position. That brother - i sincerely don't believe is a smoke screen.

Pouncey, could be ... but he would be a 'safe' pick, fits a need, and potentially presents a possibility of a trade even post pick.

This is all folly of course if Ireland is 'in love' with one of the QBs ... which i am not, and while i do like CKap ... no way in RD 1 (early or late).

With the way they've drafted by trading back and in the 2nd round I wouldn't want it. But it will happen most likely. Maybe we'll draft another 2nd round QB or injury plagued player. I have low expectations. I'm not even watching until after The Office/Parks & Rec.

I agree with those who would wait to trade down in the draft. The longer the Dolphins wait to trade down, the better chance they have of making the best deal for themselves. Also I don't see teams drafting after the Dolphins being in any hurry to trade up if they are only interested in a particular player. They have no idea at this time if that player will even be on the board after 14 teams select before the Dolphins are on the clock. Of course if a team wants to trade up to 15 and they are willing to offer the Dolphins their first and second round pick this year and a second round pick next year. The Dolphins should make that trade immediately.

I would agree if I thought that their was truly a franchise QB who would be available with the 15th pick in the first round, but I don't. I think every QB in this draft has serious questions concerning their ability to become a top tier QB in the NFL. Even Newton and Gabbert are question marks and they are rated 1&2 at the QB position by most experts. I don't see any of the other QB's on the board who merit a selection in the first round. Perhaps if the Dolphins do make a trade with the Steelers, drafting Ponder, Dalton, or Kaepernick with this late first round selection, might be justified. I don't think Mallett will be anything but another Henne in the NFL and Jake Locker should be a late second or possibly third round selection in the draft. The Dolphins should be drafting the best player on their board when their turn comes around. Hopefully this player will be an offensive player but if he isn't. Ireland should select this player even if he plays on defense. Drafting lower rated players on a teams draft board just to fill a team need rarely ends up being a positive move in the long run.

Please trade down. 15 is a likely dead zone this year because we can get a player of similar talent at the end of the round at the 2 positions we're likely to take at 15- Guard & RB (Ryan Williams & Danny Watkins).
