I do not think it was the fact that Sony went cheap that allowed their network to be hacked. Even though Sony didn't charge 50 dollars a year it did provide revenue stream, from download games and from advertisements from HOME. Plus the fact that sony recently released PLUS to make more money online, your "cheap" route does not really hold water.

One big difference between Sony's network and Xbox's is that Sony's was more open.

Sony is now saying that some of the PSN services will be back on-line and operational in a week...in the meantime my 360 just keeps chugging along...

LOL @ your sig, because it's so true. Ever been to Downtown Jacksonville? It's about as exciting as walking through a funeral. Someone needs to take a giant flamethrower to that place. Most Depressing "City" in Florida.

When the smoke clears and we get more details on what happened then we can assign blame accordingly. While it's easy to just say that Sony should have invested more money it was probably a combination of design choices, budget, and some good old human incompetence.

I shouldn't complain too loudly since this mess will make for a better, more secure network for my future PS3 gaming (when I get around to buying one).

We already know what the problem is: Sony didn’t encrypt their database tables that included customer identification values. They assumed that the security between that table and the Internet was strong enough, even though they were encrypting the credit card tables.

So far, nothing to tell me that we're getting credit for it. If it's up next week and I only lose 2 weeks of service, I'll be annoyed, but not enough to ***** about 7 dollars worth of service. If it goes on longer then that, then I'll start complaining to get a refund of time lost.
More importantly, I'm just pissed, because my characters were all hitting level 30 and the game was becoming more exciting.

Completely off topic, but since you seem to have spent some time with it, how is DC Universe? Worth buying? I never got that into World of Warcraft, but I'm just not that into gaming on a computer :crapstrom:

My girlfriend and I had a lot of fun for about a month. Then everyone's 1 month starting sub expired and there wasn't enough end game content to satisfy them enough to resub. It's a little unfair because WoW had even less in the beginning.....but this is 2011 not 2004. It was a lot of fun, but it's a damn near abandoned game PC wise at least. We canceled our subs about a month ago.

Anybody having the bank issue them a new credit card / debit card? Seems like a PITA, but I might do this.

The only card I used was my main checking account debit card. I know that sounds bad, but I figure it's something I always keep a very close eye on. Wouldn't take me long to notice is something was up. Luckily, I've never been the victim of identity theft, but I figure for now if it ain't broke I'm not fixing it.

If you guys use Bank of America and, IIRC, Citi, you can get a virtual credit card from them. Basically it’s a throwaway card number that links to your actual card/account, so you can basically wipe it from existence at a moment’s notice in an event like this.

    Anyway, details about Hirai’s presser.

The price is still a little steep considering it's on top of the monthly subscription fee. I'm still enjoying it. The PvP aspect is pretty fun. just flying through the city and seeing a villian attacking a low level hero and coming to their aid. Pretty good storylines with all the storyarcs, more enjoyable if you're into the DC heroes. They also have different storyarcs available depending on who your superhero/villian mentor is: Superman/Luthor (meta), Wonderwoman/brother blood (magic) Batman/Joker (Gadgets).

Overall, I like City of Heroes a little better. The only plus for DCU, is that it is easier to solo your way to the top level. But once you get to the top level, the level 30 missions really need teams.

My understanding is it was a result of the same attack, not a separate incident.

That appears to be so. But it’s still amazing how large the scope of this attack is.

I hope Amazon, Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc are double-checking their infrastructure...

If I'm being completely honest I've just about had it at this point. I sympathize with Sony to a certain degree and understand they were a victim of an attack. But waiting this long for the service to come back up is a little ridiculous. And I'm not even that much of a hard core gamer. Black Ops was the first game I've been into playing online in a long time.

Right now the Xbox360 deals on Amazon really have me tempted. If I can sell my old model 360 I'm going to be getting one. Not just because of this attack, but in part. Wanting to play Gears of War 3 online is another factor.

1st, this couldn't have just been added to the ongoing "Sony Breach/Network Down" thread or the other Class Action thread?

2nd, why would anyone want to force Sony to pay out $10 a person? That's such a small amount, it's not even worth bringing a case against them.

Uhh, that is 10 dollars per person, seems pretty reasonable. If it comes back online this week, then 10 dollars about covers what was lost in my subscription

Would you rather wait about two weeks and have psn return with a better security infrastructure, or wait a couple days and have it come back with the same ****ty security? I'd rather be inconvenienced for a few weeks.

I'd rather they had done it right the first time. From what I understand their weaknesses were exposed before this attack so it's not like they didn't have warning. Like many huge corporations they decided financially it made more sense to cross that bridge when they came to it. Do you remember the Ford / Firestone controversy? They knew the tires on the vehicles would cause deaths, but weighed the cost of lawsuits vs recall and opted for the lawsuits. Now, nobody is dying over the PS network being down (well, I bet at least one hopeless nerd has offed himself by now) but you get the comparison.

So, Sony’s responded to a Congressional inquiry. And GARDENHEAD’s lawsuit gets a boost.

First: Sony knew about accounts being compromised six days before informing us.

Second: Sony says Anonymous’ DDOS attacks provided cover for the PSN hack

Lastly: at least one Representative isn’t happy with Sony’s response

Had to chuckle watching the white house press correspondence guy today give his live update on the Bin Laden photos and details. At the very end some guy pops in with a question about Sony. He's like, "Um, yeah, not sure about that."

Who woulda thunk the silly games I waste my spare time with would be a congressional, and now even white house topic of discussion.

Topdawg apparently only posts stories, never replies to anyone else’s threads.

Because, as GARDENHEAD admitted, the lawyers get paid too. Usually first, and always the most.
