i thought it was bad in a game thread on a lakers board but man all these GM's in here are pretty annoying to read
At least they didn't trade a first round, 2nd round and a fourth round pick for an unproven wide receiver
I'm not sure why you guys think he's slow. He takes his time with his cuts and he's patient, but I wouldn't say slow. Ronnie last year was slow. This guy's ehhh in the speed department. One other thing to remember, a guy like him in Hillis broke apart the Pats defense and really banged up the Jets. That's the model to go for when trying to beat teams like New England especially. Oh by the way he's not slower than Shonne Greene and Greene is half of one of the league's best rushing attacks. Miami needs a consistent ground game producing at least 4.3 YPC, Thomas is a part of that.
I dont have a problem with what they gave up to get into the late second, relatively cheap. But I do have an issue with who they picked and who they passed on once there!
They just almost fixed our offensive woes in two picks. If they can snatch up DJ Williams/Virgil Green and Edmund Gates/Ricardo Lockette, take McElroy later, and find a fast back either in FA or later rounds/UDFA's/Kory Sheets, we'd be in business.
I am not either, however I am thrilled with his vision, cut back ability and ability to fall forward.
Remember guys that Emmitt Smith was clocked anywhere from 4.55 to 4.7 in the forty at the combine. What I like about Thomas are two very important attributes: he is quick and decisive when attacking the hole and he has good instincts for setting up blocks at the second level. This guy is going to pick up some chunk yardage for us. A 4.2 to 4.5 ypc back. I'm not disappointed with this pick at all. And what did we give up? Picks where players typically come in, take up space, and get cut. Not a bad deal and certainly not a bad pick.
I base this on the teams that picked before us and how RB's before him were picked. Ingram went 23, the other two Vereen and LeShoure were picked before him leaving only one or two teams on the board who were actually expected to pick a RB that early. Maybe they pick Thomas maybe not. Either way there would still be good talent at RB left for grabs. My point is we could have made more of our pick by selecting say a WR like Hankerson, Gates, Brown, Jernigan or Paul. TE's Cameron, Williams or even go as far as Vincent Green!! Basically what I'm getting at is that we needed to address other areas first. There is going to be more talent left in the 4-5th rd's this year at RB then there will be at TE or WR. So, if we stayed and picked say Hankerson at #79 or TE Cameron we would still have a 5th and 7th. Hunter, Jones, Toddman and a few other RB's would still be available in the 4th. Then we maybe double up on RB's again in the 5th or go after a WR for special teams etc.... I just think we could have played our cards a bit better then we did. All I see in Thomas is a slower Ronnie Brown with half the receiving skills and bad hammies. I don't think he is a BAD pick, just not the best. We already have Hilliard, we need a speedy back with lots of big play ability. I just don't see this in Thomas
We just drafted 2 guys who made our offense more athletic........ and we're not done. This is extremely good news.
Umad? Seriously though you're hating this pick because Daniel Thomas put up a 2.9 avg against Nebraska? Were you against Adrian Peterson then and his awesome 2.9 avg against TCU(22 carries) and 2.5 avg against UCLA(23 carries) in 05? Daniel Thomas sorta reminds me of AP and I will get bashed for saying that but I don't care.... I'm laughing at everyone saying Thomas reminds them of Ronnie Brown, though.
yeah, Thomas is not Ronnie Brown. He's a better back for us, and he's a better threat out of the backfield.
Yes it is not a pick that I think is a good one. People have bad games I realize, but this was a big night for KSU and they went up against a good defense and got owned. I was not impressed. He just seems like a guy who can produce against weaker teams, but not so well against better ones. He didn't just look like he was having an off night, he looked physically inferior to the defenders he was playing - slower, less aggressive, less athletic. Still, if he can correct his fumbling issues (possible, far from guaranteed) he may turn out ok. I hope he does, but I would be less surprised to see him not on the team in 3 years than I would be seeing him in the probowl. I am against the pick as it stands, but if he proves me wrong then I will be happy because he will be doing well. One can be against a pick, its ok.
It was the same I think with Ingram in a couple of his games as well. People have to give Ireland time. Believe me if he started out with D'Brickashaw Ferguson, Nick Mangold, Jerrico Cotchery, Shaun Ellis, Calvin Pace, David Harris, Darelle Revis, and a few others instead of Carey, Yeremiah Bell, Crowder, and a young ineffective Paul Soliai Miami would be a pretty damn good team. Ireland's drafting is better than what the Jets, the Ravens, the Pats, and the Steelers have done in the last three years. I can say that with the utmost confidence. The roster save Yeremiah Bell, Channing Crowder, and Vernon Carey is almost entirely new. That's a rebuilding project. Trust me if this group had Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Haloti Ngata, and Terell Suggs they'd be pretty ****ing good and that's not even mentioning who Miami could have drafted instead with those guys.
So you think adding Pouncey and Thomas will improve the play of Henne and this will lead to the Dolphins being 7-9 or possibly 8-8. The last I checked the Dolphins have been 7-9 the last two seasons and fans are not very happy with the team. Ireland, Sparano and the rest of the individuals responsible for player selection need to be be replaced and until the owner make this decision. The Dolphins will remain a mediocre to bad team in the NFL.
I don't know what you have been smoking but Ireland and Parcells have done an absolutely terrible job the last four years. To say that Ireland has done a better job than the Jets, Patriots, Steelers, and Ravens in selecting players in the last four years is totally absurd. All four of these teams are superior to the talent on the Dolphins and that includes the players these team have selected in the drafts in the last four seasons. I have no doubt that if Ireland were fired today. He would not be hired as a GM by any other organization in the NFL. He was a puppet for Parcells and now that he is totally on his own, the Dolphins will only continue to slide toward the bottom of the NFL. The sooner Ross gets rid of Ireland and Sparano. The better off the Dolphins will be.
For everyone bashing Daniel Thomas...Jim Mora has something to say to you....
Yeah old Jim never did diddly poo did he as a coach? He only turned two of the NFL's consistently losing franchises into perennial post-season contenders. In the USFL, he took his team to 3 championship games and won 2 of them. I guess all the coaches who never won a Super Bowl are idiots huh?
I think it's highly disingenuous to say that it was Mora who turned the Colts or the Saints into perennial post-season contenders.
The problem is that it was not Mora making these selections. It was Ireland and Sparano and the one thing we do know is that the only good thing they have done so far is bring the Dolphins to a level of boring mediocrity. Personally I don't think they have a clue as to how to built a winning football team and after the 2011 season is over, I suspect they both will be looking for new jobs.
Friend jw3102: 1) don't underestimate the value of a potentially solid ground game on Henne's ability to open the attack in the air. its football 101: dominant offensive line>ground game established>passing game opens 2) I believe they will bring in a promising veteran QB in need of a second chance (on the cheap) to compete for the start. competition is the elixir of success 3) I have never been a big fan of Sparano or Henne & taken a lot of flack on this board for it. having said that, things change. they can change for the better or continue to deteriorate, but things always change. (PS/ I believe Ireland has set the right course & is an asset to the team) may Henne & Sparano surpass their potential in 2011 nobody knows what tomorrow brings
You are quite correct sir. I simply posted the video because I think Jim Mora just said what a lot of coaches would like to say, but won't. Jim often made some pretty good off the cuff comments. For better or worse.
You don't know and you never will!?! Dude, that's just being a dick...Sorry, really like Mora but that's a jock move. The production is obviously there. Pretty damn good short area burst in tight quarters, nonetheless. Runs high, but I see why upon watching his highlights again. To watch him drop and cut is pretty impressive at 230 lbs. Handles the rock pretty loosely, but he's only played RB two years. Again, looks like a safe pick and now reminds me less of Jimmy Johnson and more like a beefier Kareem Abdul-Jabar.
This clip gives me hope...
