Muck - Looks like a young Randy McMichael out there catching the ball and running after the catch! Do you remember when we drafted McMichael in the 4td round back in 2002 and all the Finheaven cronies were spitting mad because they wanted us to draft OG Martin Bibla from the U. We dont know folks. We just dont know.
Except he's faster than McMichael. He looks like a 4.6 guy and I think he could carry 6-3, 255 at that speed. That's a pretty talented player.
He looks even faster than Randy! And hopefully doesn't flame out after a sensational rookie season! I don't remember that exact outrage, but I'm SURE it happened.
Randy was pretty athletic coming out of college - I remember the number 4.51 but maybe Im getting confused. Wonder how this kid will look in Daboll's system.
He may be used as a FB but Daboll's fullback wasn't like a traditional fullback last year. Split him (Vickers) out quite a bit, used him with digs, clearouts, slants. Vickers had like 4/5 catches though. I think that will be higher with Clay.
It's the return of the... 2 WR 2TE 1 RB formation. And with Clay's skills we can out him out wide and put Marshall in the slot. How bout that Rexy? You gonna put Revis in the slot and let Bart Scott cover our man Clay? Or you gonna leave Scott on Marshall so he can score on you twice like he did last year? Hmmmm. Cant wait to find out. Good job Ireland. Now it's on Daboll to come with a plan and Henne to make it happen b/c the pieces (except speedy RB) are there.
I think we might see more 3 WR, 1 H-Back, 1 RB or perhaps 50/50 split. Probably just depends on the opponent. Against the Jets you use Clay because they're developing CBs to stop multiple WRs, same with the Pats. Against other teams with perhaps 1 good CB, you go with multiple WRs. Either way you don't have Lousaka Polite, a slow *** version of Ronnie Brown and Joey Haynos out to catch passes.
Yeah, I'm curious of how much of that stuff was left on the field due to circumstances. I'm pretty well convinced Mike Holmgren traded for Peyton Hillis not as a runningback, but as a fullback to implement some of that WCO-style stuff, and that was part of the stuff that they wanted Daboll to put in his play book but didn't done with Hillis carrying the load and Vickers being a pure blocker.
The average size is what Bill Parcells, in his philosophy, has set as a minimum. The thing is, you mentioend Haynos. Haynos is 6'7", 260 lbs or so. The thing with Charles Clay is that he is a guy that can flex out and attack the inside seams of the field. He will bring to the table a lot of what David Martin brought to the table in 2008, and the Dolphins have missed Martin's ability to open up the underneath routes to the receivers.
One of them will be kept because this team will need a second blocker at tight end. Both Mastrud and Shuler have potential as blockers. Charles Clay will compete with Dedrick Epps for a roster spot, IMO.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/stats?playerId=237445 Looks like Clay was quite the receiver in college: 69 receptions for 1024 yards and 7 TD's 38 for 464 and 9 39 for 530 and 5 43 for 526 and 7 What do we have here....
Here's the thing? Which Roster spot does he take? There's no way in hell we waste a spot just for a second FB.
That's fine, they can come in on GL or ST or whatever, but no more asking them to be play a significant role on offense.
Anyone remember Richie Anderson? Richie Anderson was about 6-2, 230 lbs. He wasn't a true full back and wasn't a true tight end, but he was a guy that Bill Parcells moved around a lot with the Jets and was a jack of all trades type of player that hurt us a lot. Another guy that is similar is Keith Byars, another guy that wasn't a true fullback or tight end.
these videos are very conforting, he seems to move very well (IMO, some of his runs are impressive in the way he moves, thinking of his size) and he has apparently good hands... quite happy I have to admit
Clay was an ultra productive pass catching fullback in Tulsa's spread offense. He is a powerful runner that gets the difficult yards between the tackles and consistently finds running lanes due to good vision. He frequently lined up at tight end at Tulsa and was a difficult matchup for defensive backs. However, he is a bit of a man without a position, as he does not have the blocking skills to lead a heavy running attack or the refined receiving skills to be a tight end. Overall, Clay has enough athleticism to make an NFL roster and should be a middle round draft pick. **From NFL.com I never heard of the guy before. I'm livid when I see FB with Green sitting there. I look him up on Insider, he's the #1 FB in the draft. top end FB speed at 4.7, ran 34 times for 232 yds, a 6.6 avg., and lined up a lot at TE. I look him up on NFL, he's not listed but, is ranked as the #7 TE in the draft, caught 43 balls for 526 yds, a 12.2 avg. The the light goes on and it's WOW, this guy could be a great pick. I like it.
Eh, Sharpe was 6'2''. Hernandez is 6'2''. He's an inch shorter than Fasano. He's complementary. He'll be catching more probably, but he's still only a complement. Gates is an inch taller as well btw.
Sounds like we may have found the next Dallas Clark? I love the idea of someone who could play both positions. Now we can use one less roster spot on either fb or te and carry extra players in more important positions.....
Bitter about? It's the truth. Maybe not so much about Pouncey, but if they plan on playing Clay exclusively at FB, that's ridiculous. He can't block. This guy can be a very good player for us playing mostly TE, some FB, some HB, especially on 3rd downs.
We had a great draft, but this is the only pick that I didn't like. I would have rather drafted a FS, SS or a speedy RB. I don't see how they added any speed in the backfield at all and that was one of our greatest needs. Forgive me guys, I am sorry to say this, but this pick makes no sense to me. I am not saying that he is not a good player, I just have no idea why we picked him over our other needs.
What backfield? FBs don't usually even run 4.6s. He's a TE/H-Back. He's nothing like Cooley by the way. Clay can run, Cooley is far slower. A bigger Richie Anderson as KB mentioned.
All comes down to Dabolls creatively. On paper the pick seems iffy, but if Sean Payton was our coach id be very excited about this guy. Right now i know nothing of Daboll or what he plans to do with this offense, so i'll stick to cautiously optimistic.
Offense needed a TE/Xfactor; we got it. Offense needed to get more athletic; we got it. Offense needed to become less predictable; we got it. Give it half a season--- you'll come around cobra. This is a kid with a lot of upside if Daboll can figure out how to use him effectively. You gotta remember---- he's getting a late start at TE/Hback. Clay is a guy we can move all around the field to create mismatches.
The benefit with Clay is that unless you put a really damn good linebacker (can cover him and not be a liability against the run) you have to cover him likely with a safety. Henne will probably be given the ability to audible into a running play where Clay comes from back outside back into the traditional role of a FB, but now instead of a true LB you have a safety trying to stop the run. The advantage for the Dolphins running game will be obvious as compared to having say Polite. Cobbs played a similar role blocking at times if I'm not mistaken, but he was nowhere near the size of Clay. There are almost no 100% accurate comparisons of Clay I can think of on the NFL level.
