Chad Henne said Friday he thought the fact the Dolphins didn’t draft a quarterback was a sign of confidence in him. “But it’s not my job yet,” he said. “I’ll still have to compete” with a to-be-determined veteran. Henne — who was attending a charity event in honor of Jim Mandich, who died April 26 — believes he can succeed in new coordinator Brian Daboll’s offense: “I like it and I’m comfortable with it. I don’t know the whole offense yet, but it’s very diverse, and there a lot of things you can add to it.”
One change he especially likes: “Last year, we did five- or seven-step drops” on pass plays. “Now, we have three, five and seven. It keeps the defense on their toes. As a defensive back, you’re not looking at the quarterback’s feet as much.” Shorter drops at times will translate into quicker throws “and we’ll have shorter patterns.”
Henne disputes the notion that he was handicapped last year by a fear of making mistakes, pounded into him by coaches: “I don’t think I was ever afraid of mistakes. There are things I have to improve on, but I’m not going to change the way I play.”

    • Henne said he and about 30 Dolphins will begin on-field practices this week that will try to replicate Dolphins practices, as best they can: “We’ll try to get some of the plays in.” Rookie center Mike Pouncey has been picking Jake Long’s brain and practicing snaps with Henne.

Last year was a tough year for Henne. This regime is going to go all-in to show that Henne is the right guy .This regime is betting their future on him.

I think we have to hope that he can turn things around.Their whole draft was geared towards making Henne's job easier. IMO Its sink or swim time.

Whether we like it or not we are on the same ship.Either Henne succeeds or we will be looking at a new regime AND QB next year.

Looking for a new regime sounds about par for the course for this organization. No patience to build for the long haul, we need instant gratification in Dolphin land.

Largest "duh-huh" statement that could be made "gee, glad they did not bring someone in via the draft to replace me"

Would be nice to see us..just..get..lucky..with..a Qb...just once..one time..come on man

Pads, teams aren't "lucky" with QB's. No QB comes in the league without needing fixing. Brady needed to sit, Rivers needed to sit, Rodgers needed to sit, Ryan had a poor 09, Flacco...is good on his best day, average on most. Fact is, we've been terrible at picking someone, sticking with them, and turning them into real QB's.

    Fitzpatrick, Vick, Shaun Hill, etc.

Shaun Hill is by no measure a good QB. He's an adequate clean up guy. Vick came out running. Came from prison and sat for a year. Now he's in an Andy Reid system. A. J. Feely? Fitzpatrick was sitting behind Palmer in Cincy though.

All were finds in FA KM, no one thought much of them and they all played well.

    That is "luck".

This is a run the ball, play defense, ground and pound type team. If we're asking Henne to win games for us again this year, that'll mean our running game still stinks, ST is still a joke, & the D is still struggling to create turnovers. If that's the case then yeah we're looking at 7-8 wins and probably a new regime. But, if we can do those three things, top 7 in rushing, top 15 in ST, top 10 in defense & turnover ratio then IMO we can make the playoffs w/ the Chad Henne from last year. Now if Henne plays better, and I think he will if the running game is top 7, then we can be a contender. A lot of variables, but the Jets did it w/ friggin Sanchez so I think it can happen here also.

All I can say about Henne bro is I'm driving by the car lot and there are some nice looking cars in there, not ready to trade in quite yet, but I've asked about a couple of models..

I see cars that cost 7-9-11 million dollars (Orton-Young-Palmer) & they don't run much better than the one we have at 550,000.

The car lot is offering financing...

Kidding aside, for me the best news this offseason is Sparano has said he is not going to tinker with the Oline lineup as he has in the past, thank goodness for that one, I like the point Clayton made about Young if we want to run the WC and take it up a notch, he would be a really good piece to add, maybe he beats out Henne, maybe not, but he would contribute and if Henne goes down he has enough experience to fill in and not to be Rusty Smith.

I agree but is the goal be a playoff team or a superbowl team? The real question is he ever going to be good enough to win a superbowl.
I don't think the jets will win one with sanchez and the jury is out on henne.I don't like henne but i am praying he turns the corner because i want to win above all else.

You're right, I say we give Ireland and Sparano ten years to prove they can finish better than 7-9 on a regular basis.

Ten years is kind of over the top, but having 4-5 isn't unreasonable. Jeff Fisher had 4 full seasons of no better than 8-8 before he had a really successful season, making the leap to AFC Champs in year 5.
Also I don't consider Ireland and Sparano as a package deal. While the jury is still out on Tony, I think Ireland has already shown he is above average league wide as a judge of talent. JMO.

I think you are right, Tony is on hot seat (maybe, not sold on that but that is my gut feeling) I think Irish is safe in that Ross really likes and trusts him

    Two distinct camps.

People who've seen enough to make the call that he's not a ligit NFL QB and we need to move on.....

And those who need more time and another year of incompetence with a stronger support system around him to take away some of the excuses made on behalf of Henne's poor play (which I think most people pro or con recognize )JMO and could be wrong but doubt it strongly

Obvious to me we also need a new Head coach who's able to recognize and evaluate talent in a reasonable amount of time. (as ex. QB position & state of OL after 3 years and yes lets throw in the Special team, who've been everything but special consistently.. ) along with not being able to adjust game day and forget about the 2 min drill. Now maybe Coach S. has learned on the job and that sits well with some, but my feelings is I'm afraid (but hope) we're going to be re loading again next year with a new HC but will have some quality players to work with and not a full rebuild situation...... In the long run this will benefit instead of dragging on with a inept organization for another few years, only to reload and start the process then.

Building a strong ground game is Coach S. passion, great, because we sure don't have much of a choice if you think about it. And another thought going under the bridge is the fact that 99% of the time you need a passing threat to help that ground game be successful. So who's going to run this powerful ground game, = rookie RB? and lets see we don't have a veteran RB yet, maybe bring back Ronnie........we can't get Adrian Petersen............whos the only one that would give us a pray of a shot at a successful ground game with the minimal passing threat we have now.

Folks there's just a little to much fill in the blanks, uncertainty and past screw ups to make me feel after three years we have a organization that knows what its doin.
Good thing is, if my view comes to fruition, we'll probably have a good shot at a quality QB in next years draft and hopefully an experience HC to build us back into the great team we once were and actually with a good QB and knowledgeable staff don't think it would take to long........looks like another year of disappointment,,,god I hope I'm wrong

    Three comments:

    1. Happy to hear about 3 step drops. Henne's Michigan highlight reel had quite a few 3 step drop quick passes to receivers. I'd argue quick passes to the outside were Henne's best repertoire of throws while at Michigan that opened up everything deeper. It was pathetic to hear 3 weeks straight of Miami's route predictability comments from opposing teams' secondary (Reed, Finnegan, etc.), which I think Henne was alluding to looking at his feet.

    2. I think the fans on message boards can be pretty ravenous... A 7-9 season is viewed as a colossal disappointment because of higher expectations this regime has brought. I thought we were golden after going 6-5 and our offense finally came alive against the Raiders to make our playoff push against an easy late home schedule. The team let up and our home record is something that both the organization and players should be accountably embarrassed for. You'd think our team was broken beyond repair and we were a 2-14 team by the topics and conversation here.

    3. The worse thing this offseason / lockout would be hearing no news regarding our players' activities. They could have sulked all offseason, done "individual workouts", etc. All I hear is about the offensive leaders, Henne & Long, installing the new offense they are excited about with amongst the highest participation in the NFL. That means the other offensive players are buying in. I love it.

It's about time some dolfans build a bridge and get over Henne & Sparano being here for 2011 and root for them, your team, to succeed.

Yeah I am not sure they are in for getting that "vet" to really compete as much as backup and mentor Henne. I too see the way the draft fell, it was a capitulation by them that Henne is the man, like it or not, and we will sink or swim with him. Had one of those QB's fallen, things might have been a whole different ballgame.

4 full seasons is enough time if you do it right. Other teams are well on the road to success so why should the Dolphins be any different ?

Because it is a stretch to assume both situations were equal, if one looks at the Falcons, they had Roddy White, most of their Oline intact etc.

That is not to say that this season is not "put up or shut up" time for Sparano, more to add perspective to the discussion.

    This is always my thinking.

What are we doing here ? Trying to get into the playoffs or WIN IT ALL ? If you are not trying to do the latter, why bother ? Being a playoff team is not good enough for me. Its been 40 years, its time to win it all again.

I don't know where you guys get the fact that Ireland is so good. He has made some really horrendous mistakes in FA so far. They far out number his wins. And his top draft picks have not exactly been stellar either. Odrick ??? Total question mark on this guy, Pat White ? Please. Henne ? Still tons of questions on him too. Merling ? another one that looks like it could be a wasted 2nd round pick. Turner ? YIKES !

That's about 40% hit rate, and I don't think that would make him a top 10 GM in the NFL.

Besides who wants someone that is "above average". Eff that Shyte ! I WANT THE BEST ! I've been waiting 40 years and I'm old and tired of waiting and watching other franchises pull ahead of us. Its nauseating to see Detroit making the strides they are, and St Louis, and then to us with our collective butts up our arseholes.

With such a large nucleus of YOUNG players, there's a progression through the development process, which likely means there is a progression through the success process as well, meaning you're probably going to have to crawl before you walk...... and become a playoff team before you become a SB team. That is, unless you'd like to foolishly blow your load on 1 SB run by bringing tons of short-lifed vets and ignore crucial player development. Your impatience has left you nearsighted.

I'm looking more at St. Louis & Detroit actually. I think they are both poised to do more than the Dolphins next year, BY FAR. I think that is fairer measuring stick to us than the Falcons. If those two end up with more success over the next 2-3 years than us, it will all ONCE AGAIN fall back on getting that franchise QB to build around instead of a 320 lb all world OLman. It will be the one glaring mistake and hugely defining moment for this regime.

You must ALWAYS build around the franchise QB. Its NFL Football 101.

Odd patriots waived their #2 and #3 and #4 pick and no one said a word?

Can they get a "yikes" as well?

Carpenter, Bess, Wake, Clemons, Jones, come to mind as well and 40% is actually above average, as typically only 2 starters come out of each draft class.

Kind of agree, but know that wishing never works, it does take time for guys to learn how to play the game as pros, and we had a better record then either the rams or lions in 09 and 10, who also have had the benefit of Top 5 picks consistently over the last 4 yrs.

If one wonders why I champion Young and Orton so heavily, it is because we are in the toughest division in football, hands down, the team that made the AFC title game the last two yrs could not even win the division either of those two yrs, we need to hit on some longshots to close that gap as the working theory in Miami is "we" are supposed to bring in talent and teach them how to be disciplined, tough, smart football players.

That system, if working, should be able to take raw but motivated talent and turn it into winning football players.

Take it as a positive sign we have #1 or #2 least penalized team in the NFL for the last 3 seasons.

Here's an easy solution. Quit your 40 years worth of moaning and groaning and become a Pats fan. They'll probably be in the playoffs this year. :wink2:

I don't get where losing all of a sudden translates to irrational complaining. Ireland's mistakes do NOT far out weight his wins. Where do you come up with this nonsense? Defensively he's been outstanding. Offensively he's been average at best; however, our 2011 draft appears as though he may be more competent offensively than I gave him credit for. And Wake is worthy of a top 5 pick, which easily makes up for missing on Turner and White combined.

Dude, are you serious about this Detroit stuff? Do you know how many years in a row they had to royally suck to accumulate all these high draft picks needed to be in the position they're currently in?

"StLouis on our arseholes"? Really? You're putting a team that finished 7-9 in the worst division in football, who played the 32nd ranked strength of schedule, on OUR level??

Of course I thought I would give you another chance off my ignore list. I see that was a mistake.

(SIGH)......as usual you miss my point completely.

You build a Super Bowl mentality FRANCHISE, one that doesn't just compete for the playoffs every year. You model yourself after the Cheatriots, who are pissed off every year they don't get to the Super Bowl. But that kind of thinking just eludes you and many of the others on this board, who seem to have this loser mentality of "wow its just good to get to the playoffs".

No way José ! I am not happy with that anylonger. I am looking for a Super Bowl win before I have to wear adult diapers and have drool wiped from my mouth a couple of times and hour.

The Cheatriots, can wave as many as they want, because THEY WIN DAMNIT ! They have the Lombardi Trophies and can afford to make mistakes. Our organization is fragile at best, and chaotic most likely. Most position coaches have never coached at their positions of specialty. How scary is that ?????? No vet RB is here, and only one QB with any experience at all on the roster. That's even more scary.

We needed to maximize on as many picks as possible, and it was beyond foolish to pick Pat White, and not make sure to get that franchise QB to build around. And its likely in the end, I feel, going to cost both Sparano & Ireland their jobs.

As usual you don't look at all of what is going on. The current regime in Detroit has been there 2 years I believe. In those two years they have aquired and picked up talent that the previous 10 Detroit regimes could not. Who cares about what was going on for all those other regimes. Ours has been place 4 full seasons, and the Lions 2 years less. They will be better than us this year. I fully believe that. Give them another 2 years and I believe that with the defense they are building the offense they are building around a franchise QB (who granted, does need to stay healthy) will be poised to be a solid franchise for the next 4 to 5 years at least. Better days are definitely coming to Detroit unless something goes tragically wrong. As for our franchise, I don't see better days until at they very least Sparano is gone.

But..but..they have not won a SB in 8 seasons, that would mean they have been failures..right?

As for the other stuff, eh, there is no Vet Rb or Vet Qb because they have that whole lockout thing going on DJ.

You are not going to hit on every pick as much as the Draft is hyped 33% of the 09 2nd rd class has busted, injured, or disappointments already...in 2 yrs, that fast.

I have been, and remain a loyal DolFan, probably for longer than you have been alive. Just because I don't fall lockstep behind you and your beliefs on the state of our beloved Dolphins, doesn't mean you have the right to attack my fandom of the Miami Dolphins. And in those 8 seasons how many times have they not been a REAL threat to make it to the Super Bowl ? Maybe in 2008 (and they almost made the playoffs even in that year). That is the kind of team you want to be.....its the kind of franchise Miami USED TO BE ! Many of you don't remember how it was......we didn't worry about making the playoffs, it was what seed would we be in the playoffs that we used to argue about every year. I WANT TO BE LIKE THAT AGAIN ! Nothing less is acceptable.

Yeah that's the ticket. Just win it all so Jake is pleased since he is the only one who wants the Dolphins to win a super bowl! Screw getting to the playoffs. Screw having to become GOOD first to then being GREAT! Jump right into being a SB winner, not just a contender......
