and it becomes a little un-nerving expecting these same WR's to get seperation for 3 steps routes... as least the same WR's that played the last 4 games last season...

IMO, Frerotte was definitely better than any of the rest besides Fiedler or Pennington. Combining turnovers, fumbles plus ints, Gus and Henne are pretty close depending on if you go by nfl.com or pro football reference.
The former said 13 fumbles and 4 lost, the latter said 13 fumbles and 4 recovered. Huge disparity. I didn't mind Gus though and I thought even back then that Nicky would have been better off to resign Gus rather than trade for CPep.

I think Gus had some injury question Mr C, and his 53% or so completion rate was not lil nicky's cup of tea.

But right now, the two look surprisingly similar, Henne has to drive past that though as Frerotte had a long career but he was a journey men Qb and I think Henne's toughness will take him a bit higher then he has shown especially with the new offense, there will be guys open but Henne will be vulnerable to the Cb blitz which means hits and knock downs, no more max protects very often.

The premium won't be on speed, though BM and Hartline are plenty fast enough, it will be on escaping the jam at the los.

I ask myself why I let that happen?? Why didn't the OC tailor the offense to Henne's strengths ?? Why didn't I give him the opportunities to attempt those downfield passes and why did it screw around until well into the season with his OL ??

Henne going 10 of 40 with 3 picks was not good, However, for whatever it's worth, other QBs were not far off from those type of numbers. Cutler was 17-64, 8 picks. Sanchez 21-74, 4, Palmer 16-54, 3, Ryan 16-51, 3, and even Peyton was only 29-95, with 7 picks.

I do believe that Henne struggles with the deep pass. He has a tendency to through a flatter deep ball than is ideal. To complete that you have to be very accurate and have great anticipation. When you throw a more arching pass it gives your receiver a chance to get there and make a play. I had hoped that bringing in Marshall would help Henne trust and use that arching pass more often. I also believe that Henne is a little to mistake averse. I think he and the offense could benefit if he were a bit more aggressive. It could be him or the coaching. IMO it's probably a little (or a lot) of both.

Going back to the point of this thread, in Sparano's shoes I would have worked to improve the running game and add weapons that could result in big plays from short passes (which Henne throws very well). I said this before the off-season began and it is what I believe that the team tried to do. I look at a QB like Matt Ryan, whom many see as a franchise guy (I don't), and I see a guy who benefitted greatly from a strong running game. Now I do think that Ryan is a better QB than Henne, but I don't see that difference as significant enough to compensate for the surrounding team (like a franchise QB would). In Todd's thread, the stats showed that when Ryan had similar run support to what Henne generally received last year their production was similar. I think that supports the original evaluation of the two QBs, Ryan was better, but not markedly so. Personally, I'm still looking to upgrade the QB position, but I don't think there are many options available that are likely to accomplish that. I think that Henne gives us the best chance to win and that if the players and coaches chosen do elevate the run game and produce a few big plays from short passes that this team can easily have the same level of success that an Atlanta or even the Jets have had the last two seasons. In Sparano's place, that's what I'd be looking to do.

Henne was a short passing, strong armed quarterback in college. This offense was tailored to Henne's strengths.

You can make videos of him hitting Ginn consistently.

Even with the videos of having all world wide receivers against regular college cornerbacks, he still had the statistics of a quarterback who throws the ball short, rather than deep.

I think that is exactly what they did do Rafi, which is why DT, Clay and Gates are here, also think they plan on Polite having a bounce back yr as he played in 10 with an injury.

Problem is, Atlanta added Tony Gonzalez to be that Te a young Qb seems to need, we still have Fasano.

If this offense functions at its best by the the ball being delivered from the pocket, than we have the best guy on the market, the arm is magnificent for the short to intermediate game.

If my offense covets a pocket passer, Henne can thrive..

IMO they made a mistake last year passing on Hernandez and Pitta. I think either of those guys would have made a positive impact last year and had the potential to be dynamic receiving TEs going forward. Maybe Clay can do the same, but I don't think he is anywhere near the prospect those other two were.

Well, Clay has been deeply involved in offensive play at several positions, Rb/Te/Wr, he was in for a ton of plays so I suspect he can contribute quickly, and Daboll really got mileage out of Ben Watson in Cleveland so he should flourish in this system.

INOW, Clay is not unused to running patterns and hot reads etc, he had eegads what..400 offensive touches? 500? From that aspect he reminds me of D Bess this really should not be new to him.

Its not always in the stats.....

Henne is just not a guy that inspires. His team does not believe in him, and you can see it. Matt Ryan on the other hand, has a lot of confidence, and will only get better. He hasn't reached anywhere near his peak yet, and Henne doesn't have near the ceiling that Ryan has.

Not at all. That offense only works if you have a strong running game that keeps the defense out of those short passing zones. Miami abandoned the running game too often after the first qtr of the season. The result is very tight zones that you have to be hyper accurate to consistently be successful. Henne is accurate enough but he isn't accurate at an elite level. That's something that Pennington could do, but not Henne. If the defense is sitting in your zones and you're not running, then you have to run flares and deeper routes to move the D off those. Instead the Dolphins would run too many one and two man routes and not use their backs in the passing game. If you were tailoring your offense to fit Henne then you would run more often to protect your young QB (like Atlanta and the Jets did). You would have given him more multiple WR sets since that was where he had the most success. You would have used more outlet passes to the backs (like B'more did for Flacco). They did use the deep out more than they did with CP, but that was the only tailoring I identified. Unfortunately, they were fairly predictable in their use of it and they didn't have the benefit of a WR that forced the D to protect deep first.

I have high hopes for Clay, but any 6th round prospect is a long shot. Hernandez and Pitta would arguably have been 2nd round picks in this draft. They were simply superior prospects and I think that the F.O. erred by not addressing the need when they had the opportunity.

I'd have more confidence, too, if my ignoramus of an OC didn't take me out for a ridiculous drive-killing WC or greatly limit my scoring opportunities inside FG range. I'd also have more confidence if I didn't have a vet looming over me from day 1, and I would sure as s#!t have more confidence if I had better pass protection to go with a strong ground game that eased my burden and actually contributed to offensive success so that winning didn't fall on my still-learning shoulders week in and week out.

Go back and watch all the Falcon games (including playoffs) and see how many times Atlanta won in spite of an average performance by Ryan. You act like he carried his team to the playoffs ala Peyton Manning style, which couldn't be further from the truth.

What do you mean he hasn't nearly reached his peak yet? Is developing a rocket arm capable of making the throws (that he currently can not but Henne can) suddenly in the cards for him?

Please explain why "Henne doesn't have near the ceiling Ryan has" considering it's arguable that Chad is a better pure passer than Matt.

PS: you're right--- it's not always the stats. There isn't nearly as much distance between Henne & Ryan as their QB Ratings and win-loss record would suggest. The tape doesn't lie.

Maybe Mike Tomlin and Mike McCarthy, considering Ryan played inferior to Henne against both SB teams. I'd like to throw in coaches from teams like Carolina or Zona, but Chad was too busy facing the 3rd toughest strength of schedule to be afforded the luxury of 3 games vs the worst 2 teams in the NFL.

I doubt it, I really doubt it, but if you believe that then fine. In 2 years, if you are still around on this board, and both Henne and Sparano are gone, will you then admit that I was right and something should have been done sooner rather than later in getting a franchise QB onto our team ?

Then explain to me why was he benched if Henne is "the Answer" ? Must have been someone on the coaching staff that thought otherwise. If there was then why not call for their head ? Don't bring out and lay it all on Henning either. That is an excuse many here are jumping all over, and piling on him. The Dolphins offensive problems weren't all his fault. True he wasn't probably the person best fit for the job, but it has to fall on the players some of it too.

I didn't believe it either Jake, but thats what were tryin to say in all this, there was something really wrong going on..He got benched because Henning used him as a scapegoat for not putting TD's on the board..Who's fault was that mostly?, well imo, after watching the tape, it was Henning, not Henne..Henne was executing the offense very efficiently..Plenty good enough to win football games.

Ok maybe Delhomme would not be a good pick but I'd still take him for a year over Henne ....You know Henne will get his opportunity and if he developes great I'll eat my words and actually enjoy doing it.

For that would fill our biggest weakness............

You and I both know there isn't a single GM in the league, including Jeff Ireland that would take Chad Henne over Matt Ryan. But let it go man. Save your sanity. Look at the piles and piles of Henne threads. There is no changing their minds. They will make excuses for Henne as long as he is a Dolphin. The best thing you and I can do is to hope they're right and that Henne does develop into a franchise QB.

If Henne doesn't pan out, then he and Sparano will hopefully be gone. They'll hate Henne's replacement for awhile, but then they will blindly support that QB as well in due time. It's the QB cycle of life here on the Phins and other Dolphin message boards. I'm sure other NFL teams with mediocre to lousy QBs have the same debates.

As I've said before, I can't wait for the day when we have a QB that we don't have to bicker over whether or not he can get the job done. We'll watch him play on Sundays and just KNOW that he's our guy. I'd love for Henne to be that guy, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Put the shoe on the other foot. We are few and far between. People who support the kid. In any and every thread, we will post evidence as to why we think something. We will rewatch games and post our take. We will look at everything, then there will be the one person who will say:

ZOMG HE SOX! CAN HIM, CAN SPARANO ZOMAOMDAOMFPMD!

But all we're saying is, we believe Henne can be good, and here is why. You have this idea in your head that being unequivocally against Henne is better than being hopeful and providing evidence as to why we are. If anything, there is no changing your minds. Over this offseason, we've had notable members actually change their opinion of Henne by re-watching the games and taking everything into account. That's just homerism? For a time, dj probably would have shot the kid if he saw him in person. You're telling me we're just blind homers? Your characterization of this is insulting and quite frankly not called for. If you disagree, fine, but you just tried to take us down to children who blindly support the kid and if he doesn't pan out will be against the successor just because. If you can't debate, just leave. If you have to insult, you have no point.

I think being unequivocally against Henne is every bit as bad, if not worse than being unequivocally for him. Once again, I'm being categorized without grounds. I support Henne and will support him as long as he wears a Dolphin uniform. That doesn't mean I don't have serious questions about whether or not he can be a franchise QB and worry about the fact that as of yet, we do not have a reliable plan B to Henne.

I don't mean to insult you. I'm simply trying to save someone grief from trying to change your mind when it will never happen. You state you're objective in your analysis of Henne, but when you agree with or make statements implying that there are NFL GMs who would choose Chad Henne over Matt Ryan, you show that you're really not that objective. When you automatically agree with any media or source in support of Henne and write off anyone offering a conflicting viewpoint, it shows you're hearing what you want to hear.

But it's a Dolphins message board and you're allowed to blindly support a Miami Dolphin player. Nothing wrong with it. Disagree with it or not, but the cycle of QB support I have painted has held true on Dolphin message boards since I've been a part of them. I believe it's an accurate picture I paint. Like I said, ultimately I hope you're right about him. I'm just trying to save someone grief who will never change your mind.

Hmm, there also exists a truism:

"What are you going to believe the stats, or your lying eyes"?

I do agree that it is better to be informed (to an extent, best in the NFL on 3rd and 5 or less! is a bit absurd) then to be uninformed, witness any thread discussing Vince Young, but it is easy to see why some would not go for Chad Henne as "safe" does not mean "successful" at Qb.

Not at all, that can mean points are left out on the field, as CK showed from the opponents' 50 yd line to their 20 yd line Henne was great, but the NFL is about generating TD's not stats.
