Or Murtha. Oh and if they release Carey they better sure up the left guard position because a line of Long, Incognito, Pouncey, Jerry, Garner/Murtha is really not looking to hot. I'd rather have something were it's Long, (FA:Kosier or Blalock or Baas), Pouncey with Jerry and Incognito competing for RG and Garner and Murtha competing for RT
When I added the contracts a month ago(base salaries only) our salary came in at $84 million, I didn't know dead money counted against the cap. It looks like we won't be able to sign DeAngelo Williams and Marshall Yanda after all.
Phins Cap Update NFL is saying the salary cap will be $123M, which may include a one player $3M exemption I mentioned but, not 100% sure. Barry Jackson reports that will leave us about $12M under as of now. Good news. Apologize for my posted numbers being off, they were the best I could find until now.
The numbers I was able to get before this had us at $5M under. Having another $7M to spend is good news.
padre said something like we get like 12 million of the books with brown, ricky and pennington, will this add to it ? because close to 25 million would make me feel much better
It really doesn't matter if we have 12 or 25 mil to spend. It's not what you spend, it's how you spend. What I mean is that in another thread, it mentioned that Washington spent 178 mil last year and look how they turned out. They were a worse team than Tampa Bay who only spent 80 mil.
I don't understand your concern. We're at a good starting point, and can free up additional monies, if needed, by cuts, trades or re-doing current contracts. We can pretty much go after who we want.
He was also second to Davis in the most times being thrown at, which is not good considering he is a Nickel sub.
I disagree. It does matter. It could be the difference between having to cut Vernon Carey to do what you aim to do in free agency, and getting to keep him. Cutting Carey will save a little over $4 million and also loosen up future salary cap years. The Dolphins seem to want an impact QB, impact RB and impact OLB. It's arguable that they can't get all three with only $12 million in 2011 cap space, while still signing all their own RFAs and draft picks.
FWIW - David Canter told me he doesn't anticipate the Phins doing anything with Soliai, and just keeping with the franchise tag. The problem with Ruud is that he makes his tackles 8 yards downfield. He gets heat for not making plays closer to or behind the line of scrimmage.
I don't have much regard for this staff but I seriously doubt they're dumb enough to start Lydon Murtha at RT. It would be Nate Garner, IMO. He's a Right Tackle by trade, he just moved to Guard temporarily because they needed him there and he happens to be versatile. If you read into what Tony Sparano has been saying, he regards his constant shuffling of the OL last year as a mistake. He wants to name five guys ASAP and have them working together all training camp and all preseason. If you cut Carey, you pretty much just name Jake Long, Richie Incognito, Mike Pouncey, John Jerry and Nate Garner as your starting OL and go with them for better or worse, having them all getting used to working together. And I know not all agree but I've wondered how suited for the incoming ZBS Vernon Carey is...agree to disagree with those who think he'd be great in that system. I think it's not the system for him, though that doesn't mean he would be "bad" in it. He's a good football player, good football players find ways to succeed, but he signed a $7m per year contract and if you're making that kind of money you want to make sure the guy is placed properly to be worth that kind of money and make that kind of impact. Just like the Dolphins want to be sure that as a 1st round pick Mike Pouncey has as much opportunity as possible to be worth that investment.
They want a veteran QB, not a impact QB. That's why their looking at Vince Young. I do agree the more money you have available, the more options you have, but it doesn't mean nothing if you don't find the right players. Again, look at the Redskins. You always have options, plus teams always find money to get the players they really want.
Sapp was VG vs Buff, Cinci, Tenn, and Cleve. He was very bad vs Pats, Pitt, Balt, Jets, and Pats. Draw your own conclusions.
He doesn't pull the trigger quick enough but a lot of that seems to be because he's going in reverse initially. Its still an issue but I also think him being a pipe dropper in their scheme so much is an issue as well. I still like him. It would be equally dumb to rely on Nate Garner IMO. Its zone blocking, not a zone blocking scheme. There's a difference IMO. One is a few plays of it while the other is a full blown scheme. Its really just narrowing it down to inside and outside zone in Brian Daboll's case, and that's not really a big deal for Carey IMO. If they cut him, I don't think it will be because of that reason.
I think the $12M allows for an impact RB, and one other impact player. I don't see any available at QB or OLB but, I could well be wrong on who we may have interest in.
Any veteran QB that can come in and start is an impact QB. They've made it clear that this off season they want to give Chad Henne REAL competition at the position. Matt Hasselbeck turned down a $7 million deal offered by the Seahawks. Vince Young is at least as impact a QB as Hasselbeck, only difference being whatever money you give Young is probably going to have a lot of behavior strings attached to it. Point being, what they want to acquire is not cheap, and arguably $12 million isn't going to cut the mustard.
I disagree, think that's an exaggeration. Nate Garner is a better football player than Lydon Murtha, by a good margin. I disagree. He's already inconsistent, and now you're crafting the running game to utilize stuff that doesn't accentuate his strengths as well. That would be equally the reason.
IMO, a impact QB would be Orton, a veteran QB would be Young. Young can run, but other than that, is he any better than Henne? I know you dont like Henne, but again, it's only our opinions. As far as the money goes, I do agree that more money=more options, but you still have to hit on the right players. See Smiley, Wilson but then with no money, we got Bess and Wake.
I think it's unproductive to focus on the word play. You know what my point was. My point was that the Dolphins want to acquire an (insert adjective here) QB, an (insert adjective here) RB and an (insert adjective here) pass rusher. What they want to acquire in those three positions, a veteran QB that can come in and legitimately compete with Chad Henne for the starting job, along with a tailback that can share equally in the running load with Daniel Thomas and a pass rusher that can pick up the slack if Cameron Wake gets doubled/tripled all the time...those are not cheap things to acquire. Hence my disagreement with your original statement that whether it's $12 million or $25 million it doesn't matter. I think it does matter.
http://blogs.sun-sentinel.com/sport...8-in-nfl-according-to-pro-football-focus.html Yes, and for those who question how legit they are here's a link from the Sun-Sentinel using their OL rankings for an article. They are VG in what they do.
I do. You have to spend the money wisely. But at only $12 million they're a lot more handcuffed than we'd hoped and may not be able to do the things they want to do. That kind of sucks.
You can't make something from nothing. In order to "come up with" more money they have to make tough decisions, and as I said cutting Vernon Carey COULD be one of those tough decisions.
well, Thru film study I feel Henne deserves another chance to lead the team, however, I'am not gonna spend too many resources on someone who I'am not thrilled about, taking away our ability to target one of the QB's in next years draft, Weeden included. No draft picks for Orton.. The one player I have thought about from the get is mcnabb, mainly for some of the reasons that you have stated, A vet on a comeback trail is intriguing..Now I know he seems to have lost his body composition, legs lookin a little weak, midsection lookin a little soft, but if this man has dedicated himself this offseason, 34 is not an impossible age to get the body in correct condition...This is something we just don't know, but I sure would be interested in his offseason conditioning.
Not sure I'd trust that McNabb has been working hard through the lockout personally. I could get with the program on him but you also have to keep in mind the Redskins have suddenly decided they're going to fake like they're keeping him, and trade him off. I'm not paying draft picks for Donovan McNabb and his $11 million or whatever salary.
I would not pay picks for anyone, other than possibly Palmer, and maybe a late rounder for Slaton if he becomes the late option.
He's a better football player, I agree, but he doesn't stay healthy. Its really not that big of a difference.
