a RB and/or DB would be nice but not game changers for Miami in the up-coming free-agency. what we need is a veteran QB on the cheap to compete with Henne & Thigpen for the start & an elite Left Pulling-Guard to solidify the offensive line.

free agent offensive guards worth consideration:
    Carl Nicks (NO)
    Logan Mankins (NE)
    Davin Joseph (TB)
    Harvey Dahl (ATL).
    Ryan Kalil (CAR)
    Daryn Colledge (GB)

veteran free agent QB's that might not break the bank but could compete & perhaps win the start with Henne & Thigpen:
    Alex Smith (SF)
    Marc Bulger (Balto)
    Kerry Collins (Titans)
    Vince Young (Titans)
    Chris Simms (Titans)
    Bruce Gradkowski (Raiders)
    Jarmarcus Russell (Raiders)
    Matt Hasselbeck (Seattle)

possibly Carson Palmer could be negotiated

Williams and/or Brown could be resigned reasonably. Complete the offensive line & we already have the running stable to pound out the game.
with the return of Will Allen, we have the veteran defensive back we need to help shape the secondary.
if we try & fail to establish the franchise QB this year, then one awaits us in the next draft. I would not waste major picks & treasure in acquiring what we don't need.

Carl Nicks will cost a 1st round pick, Logan Mankins and Ryan Kalil were franchised. There's a small chance that Mankins gets free by demanding exemption from the franchise tag as a named plaintiff like Reggie White did in the past, but that's neither here nor there right now.

    Davin Joseph also sucks.

I think they should sign both Trent Edwards and Kellen Clemens. Pat's always refresh afc easter's maybe we can catch some of their magic. Also if one of them makes it just makes it more sweeter.

None of those QBs excite, except maybe Palmer. Given that we have very little shot at Palmer, I'd take a cheap (only if) V Young. otherwise, spend our money elsewhere (RB, G and/or RT).

As it is, we'll be in a rush to install Daboll's new offense. Will there be time to do all that's necessary, and have a 2 or 3 man QB competition as well? Anything's possible, but I'm skeptical, even more so when I look at the garbage heap that we're calling a QB crop. Meanwhile there a few solid backs who could help us and are CLEAR upgrades over what we have today. There's also a historically deep list of WRs who are set to hit the market. Sometimes you have to take what's available and resist the urge to reach for something that's not there. Let the Cardinals, Titans, Vikings, 49ers etc trade their 2012 picks for the trash heap QBs, and if Henne doesnt work out, then we're in even better position to grab (trade up for) a guy next April.

How about Harvey Dahl or Justin Blalock? I'd think either signing would be met with some enthusiasm around here. Likely the Falcs cannot resign both in that 3 day window.
Blalock, DWill, TJack and Edwards, and I'll be sportin' a chubby.

it all begins in the trenches & nobody goes to the Superbowl w/o the Franchise QB. it can happen.

I don't think either of them are athletic enough. They need someone who is pretty athletic at left guard, even to the point of finding someone who might not be a particularly good in-line blocker. Someone in the mold of pre-injury Justin Smiley. Blalock and Dahl are pretty good players but neither are particularly athletic.

Blalock is athletic enough that he could have been an NFL OT were his arms a little longer. I think he's been pretty solid and reliable for the Falcs. If I were going to give big money to an interior OL free agent, he is the kind of guy I'd look at. He has been as durable as it gets besides being a good player. Over 50 straight starts at Texas. 62 starts in 62 games played in the NFL going back to 2007. He missed 2 games as a rookie and that's it. If we give big money to anyone, I'd rather it be someone who has proven durable and at least will be out there, more likely, every game.

It's a little bit different though. There are a fair amount of NFL Left Tackles that I doubt could be very good on longer pulls. If you watch a Michael Turner highlight video there's a bunch of zone stuff and he occasionally will pull where he's either crossing the LT or C, but it's a little bit different if he is going to get out a block someone on the second level outside of the RT.

Miami's needs right now are at Qb, and Rb! Period! They have one Qb, and the two Rb's that split the load last season are FA's! Even if you say sign one back, which I hope they only do if done cheaply, but if they do then there is no way they don't do it as their first or second step in free agency! A Guard is the least of their worries right now...

Teams get to the SB by passing and running efficiently and by playing solid defense.

In Daboll's offense, how often will the LG have to reach the 2nd level outside of the RT? Even if you believe it will be often, Blalock would have to be a huge improvement over anyone we got now for LG, and allows Richie I to move to his natural RG spot where he can just be mainly an inline mauler.

Mankins should become a UFA because getting the franchise tag 2 years in a row is by no means the spirit of the rule and with all of the judges involved, it should be found unconstitutional.

That being said, how much more do you want to spend on the OL? Long, Carey and Pouncey are 1st round picks and Incognito is one nasty individual on the field. If this staff can't create an above average OL with those 4 guys plus Jerry, Berger, McQuistan and Garner, they have no business running an NFL team.

I find it hard to believe any 1[SUP]st [/SUP]or 2[SUP]nd[/SUP] round draft picks are available to bring in talent. I think we’re all in agreement that the Ireland – Sparano regime is on thin ice and I doubt Ross allows them to mortgage his team. It’s going to be interesting to see which, if any, players get cut from their current teams instead of being shopped.

My wish list is Mankins, Jackson, Palmer or Young and Brown or Bradshaw.

Frequently enough for it to be important and that you would be losing a portion of the playbook. Daboll put Eric Steinbach's mobility to as much use as he could.

really not so much to do in free-agency
we need to complete the offensive line with an elite pro-bowl caliber left guard
then find a suitable veteran QB to compete for the start

    ^^^^^I agree whole heartedly 23!!!

Spend big money with positions that show longevity! RB is the most taxing position on one, so spending big money on an RB makes for a huge gamble!

Mankins, Palmer, and a solid reasonably price back to complement Thomas, and I'll be happy!

Gotta agree here. There is no #1 running back in Miami at this time. If we resign Ronnie or Ricky that will be partially taken care of. I believe they need to address it in free agency as the #1 issue. I think O-line is the secondary issue. If the phins can't run the ball then you could have Joe Montana at QB and it wouldn't help.

Harvey Dahl is a RG and could very well end up back in Atlanta. Justin Blalock is a LG and word is he'll test the market. I've been banging the drum for him for quite a while now. Of course, he's durable . . . something this regime doesn't seem to like all that much in their free agent offensive line acquisitions.

Well, I think he would upgrade our OL from a mobility and talent standpoint, although based on this thread that is not a consensus opinion. One other very good thing about Blalock is he's been so durable. over 50 straight starts at Texas and played in and started 62 of 64 possible games since joining the Falcons. If you're gonna give big money to a player, it's better he have a good history for durability rather than an injury history like Smiley or Grove.

want to invest or squander money?

it all begins in the trenches:
when the offensive line dominates the defensive front
running lanes open & the ground game is spawn
with the ball consistently moving on the ground
the defense has to move up & into the box to stop the run.
@ which time passing lanes open
with both the running & passing games working
(they feed off each other) we dominate the clock
maximizing scoring opportunities & keeping our defense off the field
when a well rested & inspired defense takes the field, they are eager to compete & produce a 100%
it all starts on the offensive line

acquire an elite Left Guard & Veteran QB with a significant up-side & we compete

    1) no need 4 more running backs, sign Ricky and/or Ronnie @ a reasonable contract;
having a premier offensive line to run behind will make all the difference in a game
    2) don't need to upgrade talent in the WR corp, we need someone to pass the ball consistently & accurately
    3) our defense is flush & growing. Will Allen returning to the DB gives our weakest defensive unit the experience needed to allow them to step up in 2011.

    waste not, want not...

what we need is simply a Left Guard & Veteran QB & we compete @ the highest levels in 2011
