I guess no matter who we signed as a UDFA, some folks are gonna bash the player, and bash Ireland and our scouts' evaluation skills, as if they know better. The odds are against most any UDFA making a roster, so it's always the safe bet to knock whatever signings we make.

 

The only weight I put on UDFAs is that they should have some chance vs. no chance.

And your statement has no relevance to what I'm saying since I said improvise by buying time with their feet (to throw) or by making the great pass and read. I'm talking about the ability to pass.

I can't speak for anybody else, but all I did was give an opinion on a prospect. It was the same opinion I gave when some were talking about him as a 2nd round pick. And as far as Ireland goes, I have supported him most of the times, but he has not demonstrated any reason for us to assume that he has better criteria for evaluating QBs than anybody else does. When I was scouting players I found QB to be one of those positions where there was a wide range of ability and opinions in the NFL. I certainly met many scouts that I felt would be better off using a magic 8-ball than doing any QB evaluations. So I don't agree with the idea that they must know better.

And have read that there are concerns about his arm strength, that can be improved, while never becoming a rocket arm there are things a Qb can do to improve their velocity if they are diligent.

 

I don't think he has bad footwork now. Good footwork is a big part of his great release. His problem is that he can't react when things go bad. If you look at every successful QB, they had that ability. They did it in different ways, though. Brady was always able to step back and throw accurately to the right read. Marino would step up and fire the ball in there past the DB even when it was the wrong read. Brees and Rivers are able to make incredibly fast, accurate reads. Rodgers buys time with his feet and makes the right read. Big Ben buys time by shrugging off tacklers. They all do something that lets them succeed when the OC is wrong or another player screws up. That's the difference between the franchise QB that makes you a perennial contender and the Ortons who might get you to the playoffs once in a while but would need an all-time great team around them to win a SB.

 

Have not seen him play very often, Ck(?) had a thread about a Div II playoff game he was Qbing, and maybe one other game.

Like his release, think he is accurate in between the hashes, maybe a bit more mobile then one would think.

 

Miami may not sign as many of the udfa's as we may like or hope for , however don't dismiss that they will bring in many of them once rosters are cut down.

That is and has been their mo and it should be even more so this year as it will much harder for bottom end players to make teams.

Teams like Miami will or should have an ongoing list and when a player they like , think has enough down the road potential , they will have the opportunity to bring in boat loads of these types this year , imo.

I'd like to see any interviews where he comes across badly. On youtube there are 3-4 videos where he talks to media types and he didn't seem any better or worse than 98% of football players in similar interviews.

I've never watched this guy and have no idea how he'll do, though his numbers last year were excellent (I Googled 'em); great TD-INT ratio, 68% comp., over 3000 yds. And I remember another noodle-armed dinker who did alright for us a couple years ago. But if anyone thinks a UDFA will necessarily be irrelevant, I heard on Mike y Mike that there were 23 of them in the last Pro-bowl, and we've got 2 decent ones here.

Well there is the UDFA Qb we expected. I wonder who the vet will be?

 

Just watched the youtube video of Devlin. While he looks good..at the college level, it sure looks like if he tries to force some of those throws in the much faster NFL, he's going to get picked off left and right.

 

Actually, he has a high football IQ and did well in interviews. He is an intelligent kid and can identify protections quickly, etc etc. Thats not the issue. His style of O and making the adjustment to the NFL may be a challenge, for sure. We had some connections at U of D and got some good insight into this kid. He was coached well and is mentally strong. May be a good back up and wont hurt you. Needs to work on a consistent delivery(concern), showing some inconsistency. He's a pocket guy in a ball control offense with a good D. Sound familiar?

 

But at what positions? I would guess that the vast majority of them are at WR, RB, interior OL, or on the defense. It's rare to find a gem at QB and this is coming from someone who was crowing about Kurt Warner before he replaced Trent Green.

 

For the record, 30 minutes late to his own Pro Day is why I said he had a noodle for a head. That and I've heard from 3 interviewers that interviewed him and said he came off like he had an attitude, chippy with them.

For me the arm strength and the lack of confidence that came with it were the big problems. He doesn't stretch the field.

 

Get drafted during the official NFL Draft.

 

For a player that wasn't drafted, he sounds like his ego is getting the best of him.

 

Agreed, as far as QB goes, you're not finding many Cadillacs "hidin' at the bottom of a Crackerjack box", like Warner or Unitas (9th round), or even Brady in the 6th.

To me, I did not see anything in his game that was not fixable he had the raw tools and techniques but did not look very refined while using them from a 1.5 game look at him.

He would be a great prospect to send to a NFL developmental league.

And, to me, this is all that matters. I was going to be pretty pissed if Van Camp was the best they could do in the UDFA market. I still don't quite understand how we let Froman go to the Falcons where he'll have to compete with John Parker Wilson, who the Falcons like, just for a roster spot. We should keep a close eye on that battle.

 

Maybe they like Devlin more than Froman?

 

Tell you what if they go to camp with Kyle Orton, Chad Henne, Pat Devlin and Tom Brandstater, then whatever Sparano said in the past about wanting mobility at the QB position will either have been the biggest lie ever told, or Jeff Ireland really could give two sh-ts what Tony Sparano wants.

Every single one of those guys are pure pocket passers. Every single one of those guys is awkward and has a tough time improvising when flushed from the pocket. Ketchup, ketchup, ketchup, ketchup.

 

For those of you knocking this signing, would you rather us NOT be looking for a QB in all possible places? I want them to search and search and keep searching, taking whatever chances they can to find "The" guy!

 

That doesn't necessarily make him a noodle head. I once managed to be an hour late reporting for duty at a new military base and later in the day proceeded to throw a christmas tree at my commanding officer. That doesn't make me ... oh, scratch that.
