Will Dolphins Spend to the Cap?

Last year there were rumors of a self-imposed soft cap from inside the Dolphins organization.

Heading into free agency do you think we'll spend to the cap limit or will we come in significantly under it?

This is a good question. The cap is $120 Million. The floor is $108 Million.

I have no idea where we'll end up.

Don't teams have to spend up to 95 or 99% under the new CBA? I thought that was what the rumor mill was swirling about.

I thought the floor this year was very near to the actual cap?

That notwithstanding, I don't doubt we'll be very close to the cap when it's all said and done.

Didn't know that Atom. I like the idea of a higher floor as a fan, but that's tough for smaller-market teams.

I hope we spend to our limit, not the floor.

The reality is that great franchises are built through scouting, drafting and developing players not spending in FA. Steelers are a great example.

But spending can hide your sub-par scouting, GMing and poor player development if you throw some money at a short term free agent to patch the holes.

    We got holes.

Garden, any idea what number we're at now?

How much money we have available to play?

The cap is rumored to be ~$120 million. The floor for this year is 99%, and this year only as it goes down to 95% next year and ultimately 89% iirc. That being said, the floor for this year would be 118.8 million dollars, not $108 million as that would only be 90% of the cap. So yeah, we'll spend to the cap or just slightly under it as we have absolutely no choice.

This organization has never had issues with spending money. There may be issues with HOW we spend it... but our organization always puts it's money where it's mouth is. Just made an offer to make Jim Harbough the highest paid coach in the league. Just made Dansby the highest paid MLB in the league, and Marshall one of the highest paid WRs in the league. We are not having issues spending money....

IIRC late last offseason a directive came down to cut the spending on the middle and lower part of the roster. We had either overpaid for our top tier players, or someone felt in a penny pinching mood.

I know we spend on our marquee guys, just want to see if we skimp on the role players.

Actually, I'm glad to hear everyone will be forced to spend almost equally.
