For a 6th rounder it's a good move. Bush hasn't come close to living up to his massive hype but he adds a dimension that we have lacked. I'm not doing cartwheels over Bush, but it's a nice move.

If its just a 6th and WE offered the two years, then YES that is a great move. I will be more optimisitic then.

Agreed. Like I said in another thread.....we cause HUGE matchup problems with Marshall, Bess, Gates, and Bush on the field....who do you cover? And the good thing with Bush....him catching screens with a good blocking WR in Marshall and a good pulling center like Pouncey, BIG plays could be a thing of the present for the dolphins finally, instead of a thing of our dreams..........

You complain that it's a 2 yr deal, but if we signed him to a 4-5 yr deal, you'd have probably cried about that too.

I'm excited about the Bush signing not even so much because we have a good playmaker now, but actually because I think it shows that we are not going to have a boring offense this year. No run run pass punt this year. We are not going to be predictable.

Let's not go nuts on Gates yet. We haven't even seen the guy in shorts. I'd still like to see another WR added. But yes, we have more options now, which is a good thing.

Losing 5th and 6th round draft picks is not "sacrificing your future."

    about this that:
    1) Miami could have a new starter @ quarterback & tailback, with 6 rookies entering the fray by 4 p.m.
the "toxic" problem has not materialized as far as I can see. we'll know better tomorrow.
    2) I am not a big fan of Tony Sparano & the jury is out on Daboll. they'll have this season to prove themselves
    having said that
things change, especially with another year of experience under Sparano's belt & a better hand to play
our defense is flush & on target; our Special Teams should be much improved with recent acquisitions.
    there is hope.

You can be assured that Ireland and our scouts have seen plenty of his game film. Doesn't matter if 95% of fans never seen him in shorts.
That said, I'd like to see another WR added because I'm not sold on Hartline as being anything special in the future. James Jones of the Packers has been mentioned here, and a middle tier guy like him would be a reasonable and affordable addition IMO.

I think out of all the things one can complain about with this FO, being aggressive in Free Agency is not one of them.

So what exact path do you propose for this off season if 1) signing FA is improbable 2) trading is "mortgaging the future" and 3) standing pat is not acceptable either?

If the problem with signing FA is based on Sparano's possible termination after the season there isn't much the front office can do about it now. This situation was created in the past by making some key bad decisions that cost us wins and thus appeal to FA's, and that is just playing out now.

Same thing a lot of folks are doing with Pouncey.....not even practiced yet, some on here have him as a Pro Bowler and future Hall of Famer. Just as many 1st round OL are busts as there are great ones. Tony Mandarich come to mind ?

I have seen no evidence of FAs avoiding Miami b/c of an unsettled front office or coaching situation. That is what was claimed and what most everybody agreed was ridiculous. DWill and Bradshaw came down to money. They wanted and signed for more than we were willing to pay. There is no indication that they wouldn't have come here had we offered the same or even close. Bush signed a very modest deal. There is nothing to indicate that we had to add a premium of any sort. It's that simple, it's all about the money for +90% of the players.

Ah leave it to Jake to be Debbie Downer

Heck I called it day one that Miami probably wouldn't land a huge contract (maybe 1 contract at the $6-10 million range a year). Not because of the past issue from the offseason, cause anyone with a brain knows players go where the money is. What is being an issue is the fact that the salary cap was only $120 million with a $3 million exception (McDaniels). After the rookies/undrafted signings it leaves Miami around $12-14 million. Part of which has gone into that OLB and now Bush with the rest probably towards Orton. Bush might be a million cheaper this year though as there are 3 exceptions for players with 5 years or more where you can write off $1 million on the cap.

Basically though Miami is competing with tight cap space vs teams with a crap load of cap space who are forced to spend to meet the salary floor.

Pouncey has the same exact DNA as a pro bowl center and even some of the most skeptical observers think our Pouncey is better coming into the league than his pro bowl twin. So it's not a big reach to think his odds of someday making it, are better than the typical first rounder.
Actually, OL is one of the safer positions to draft in the 1st round, when it comes to chance of success. Mandarich's level of success is not the rule for 1st round OL. Even though he never lived up to his all Universe hype, he still managed to play 6 seasons and 86 games. BTW, no one here has said Pouncey is a future hall of famer. If you are going to make that accusation you should back it up with links to the posts saying as such. I'm on here a lot and have never seen anyone say Mike Pouncey is going to the HOF. Sounds like more of your negative generalizations and exaggerations to me.

While I agree with your overall point; I think you are framing the issue in a misleading way. Free Agency maybe hasn't started technically, but in reality it has.

But again I agree with the point you are making.

Here's the list of FAs who have already switched teams. You tell me who we really missed out on.

    Matt Hasselbeck
    Takeo Spikes
    Quentin Mikell
    Steve Breaston
    Donte Stallworth
    Paul Posluszny
    Kevin Payne
    Daryn Colledge
    Justin Durant
    Sidney Rice
    Tarvaris Jackson
    Kellen Clemens
    Robert Gallery
    Bruce Gradkowski
    David Baas
    Brandon Stokley
    Will Herring

Darryn Colledge is the only guy on that list that you could realistically say we should have pursued and missed out on. We haven't even gotten to the meat of free agency yet. Please wait till Sunday before you jump off a bridge. Wait...I changed my mind...please just go jump off a bridge now

Not sure why you're so focused on who we acquire. Our fortunes will depend on the performance of the guys already on the roster.

Solia, Langford, Odrick, Starks, Dansby, Misi, Wake, Clemons, Vontae, Sean Smeezy, Henne, Marshall, Bess, Jerry, Incognito etc. If we can get even a slight improvement from those guys then our team becomes exponentially better. If the rookies or FA signings contribute then that's icing on the cake but we have a LONG list of guys who can improve the team w/o us acquiring anyone so I don't think the pessimism is warranted.

agreed, unless Miami could sign a top 5 quarterback, there aren't any free agents that are going to make Miami better than players on their team improving.

Though I wouldn't mind Zach Miller

    Well........

No Bradshaw, or Burris, or DeAngelo Williams, or anyone of real game changing consequence.

Oh but we did get Matt Moore. I'm sooooooo excited. He'll really push Henne

    :tantrum: :tantrum: :tantrum:

Welcome to another year of 7-9 or maybe if we play as I expect them, 5-11 :pity:

I'll be concerned about Burress when he proves he can still actually play. He hasn't played in the last like 38 games, and he missed 2 whole training camps while being in jail for 20 months. The dude's like 33, and this is 2011 not 2007.

Also, anyone disappointed we didn't get DWilliams at that price is a little crazy IMO.
