If Vince Young were our QB I'd advocate us running the Triple Option full time. I think it would actually have some success.
What happens when the game is on the line and they pressure Orton? and, you know, he has to escape the rush...
It's an evade the rush scenario, not a pre snap scenario. However, I've got to agree with most of the posters that Orton is probably this regime's best choice, but that's more of a criticism of this regime not being quarterback friendly.
Henne would have the adavantage over Orton given that Henne has been practicing Daboll's system for months.
If that's the case, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was, then that was an error in planning. Carson Palmer should not have been part of their plans. They should have always known there were two mountainous hurdles to cross in getting Carson Palmer, the first being Mike Brown's tendency to be an officious dick, and the second being the fact that both Carson and his wife want to be in San Francisco which is about as far away from Miami as it gets.
Like I've said before and will keep saying. Vince Young would need a very dumbed down playbook...and even then good luck with him learning it. Honestly, at this rate I'd rather save our draft picks and live or die by Henne. There's hopefully only 2 outcomes to that. Henne grows up and becomes a solid QB...everyone happy. Or Henne craps the bed, we know for sure he's not the QB....Sparano/Ireland fired. New regime hopefully drafts a QB (or hey..actually moves up to get one) next draft. Honestly I would be happy with either scenario......even if that means taking the risk Henne blows the upcoming season. I'd call it 'long term planning for short term pain' ;p
Vince Young can run better, I guess? I don't know why you seem to think that's important to a degree where they are even comparable. You don't have to run to escape pressure, or be an effective quarterback. Funny thing is last season Vince Young had all of .5 more yards a carry and was sacked every 12 pass attempts to Orton's 14.6 attempts.
I don't know why? Orton is a significant upgrade over Henne. Kyle Orton isn't an elite quarterback, but he's closer to being an elite QB than Chad Henne is to being as good as Orton. People have their heart set on this mythical quarterback in the 2012 draft that more than likely doesn't exist.
It's rather humorous how the Pro VY faction only refer to his last 2 seasons statistically, while the Anti VY faction choose to refer to his career stats only.
Oh, I don't know about that. I'm sure all the fans clamoring for Barkley, Jones, Luck et all, were clamoring for Cam Newton exactly one year ago too.
For some reason I think of Mark Twain ... I personally would be okay with bringing Vince Young on provided that he comes relatively cheap. At the very least he is a nice #2 option that does all of the things Thigpen did for us and there's talent there to do quite a bit more. But I see VY ending up in Philly ... so that in 2-3 years when Reid moves on from Vick he's got Young there to fill his shoes. Or at the very least he flips Young, like he's done countless backups in the past.
If you can read the rush and still keep your eyes downfield you can succeed. You don't necessarily need to use your legs.
I don't know if I would trust the QB Rating as the end-all be-all when it comes to QBs. After all Tarvaris Jackson had QB Ratings of 95 and 113 in back to back seasons but for some reason still found himself replaced.
Yeah he was the next Great White Hope, while 98% of football fans nationwide had no idea Cam Newton walked the same planet. We could have another Newton come out of nowhere this season, while any number of the currently proposed future stars could fall on their faces.
I'm surely going to push the envelope here, but let's compare Kyle Orton to Matt Ryan, the big "What If" and current Wunderkind example of why drafting a quarterback is a great idea. Orton 293 of 498(58.8%), 3,653 yards, 7.3 avg, 20 TD, 9 INT, 87.5 QB rating Ryan 357 of 571(62.5%), 3,705 yards, 6.5 avg, 28 TD 9 INT, 91.0 QB rating. Ryan is more efficient, clearly. He's completing more passes, and scoring more touchdowns, yes. Kyle Orton is also dramatically more aggressive. Kyle Orton threw for almost a yard per play more on average, had nearly the same yardage in 70+ less attempts, had dramatically more big plays(35 passes of 25+ yards for Orton, 14 for Ryan), and he's doing so with one of the worst run games in the league where Ryan at least has one of the more prolific, and of higher quality.
It's not the end all be all. Folks who want VY, like to mention them though, while the folks who don't want him here, choose to look at his entire career, rather than recent past. Even if one looks at his entire career though, he has a 30-17 W-L record, which says to me that no matter how he may do regarding individual stats, he somehow gets the team to rally around him and win anyway. No one can honestly deny the guy is a winner. 12-6 the past two seasons, 30-17 for his career. Sure one of the Antis may say, well it was having CJ. He was the straw that stirred the drink in Tenn. Well, if that's so, how well did Tenn play the past two seasons with CJ and Collins together in the lineup, compared with VY and CJ?
Quarterbacks do not win games, teams win games. And yes, Young sucks. All his quarterback rating shows is that he's managed to become efficient of what is asked for him, and what is asked of him isn't much.
That's a nice quaint little overused cliche' isn't it? And the QB is part of the team, and the one player given too much of the blame when teams lose and too much of the credit when they win. Also a nice little cliche'. The Titans played much better the past two seasons with VY than without. Work that little fact out in your head any way you choose, but one would have to be obtuse to not consider Young was making a positive difference.
It's a cliche, absolutely, but it's absolutely the truth. You can win games with Vince Young. I am sure with an absolute force of will and doggedness to do your best with him, you could probably get into the playoffs with an elite run game and defense. Smart people will shake their heads and call you Sisyphus behind your back though.
The Titans were 12-6 the past 2 seasons with him starting and 2-12 with anyone else. If you want to believe that's all coincidence and Young did not contribute to those team wins, well, fine by me...fine by me.
