This confuses the hell out of me: Just before this conversation, Canter told Armando that he was told by the front office that cutting Tim Dobbins was purely cap-related. Now, it seems we've talked Vernon Carey into restructuring, as his cost was $7 million against the cap this year. I don't get it.
I just mentioned this in the thread about Carey restructuring. Soliai's deal must be extended and re-done IMO. Not sure why they've waited so long actually. Does Ireland not realize he's set to pay him $12 million. If the agent is expecting a call to re-do the deal, why are we not calling. This would have been one of my first priorities once the lockout ended. Are they may hesitant on extending him since his best year came in a contract year? Who knows, but I'd rather take a chance on extending him for 3 or 4 years than paying him $12 million this season when we're apparently already up against the new cap.
I think they were waiting to see how Soliai looked shape wise before they extended him. Now that he's reported in shape I expect that they'll approach him after FA dies down. I expect they'll approach him before the end of the preseason.
I dont get it either, we could save ourself money that could be used on another FA or to give wake the money he deserves.
Isn't there some great benefit to doing it prior to August 4th? Or is that only if we cut him? I can't remember... I know theres something significant about the 4th, and the cap.
My understanding is that date is a cut off that makes cut players future cap hit (dead money) disappear. It would not apply to Soliai b/c there is no dead money on a franchise tag contract and we're not cutting him.
it might be that the cost of the 'long term' contract vs the franchise tag is that great .... would guess around 10MIL per season. if so, i would hedge this year and make him perform for a whole season before committing 50MIL and 30MIL guaranteed over 5 years to him. the guy i want to see them wrap up now is Wake .... he has proven his value and deserves every penny!!
