Damn, we lost out on Deion because he gave his word elsewhere when we may have offered more money in the long run. DAMN. 1994 would have been PRIME. Source: www.twitter.com/DeionSanders
I remember when that happened, but the reports in the media then weren't quite like Sanders says it was now. He said then, as I recall, Miami offered more money, but he signed with SF because he thought they had a better chance to go to the Super Bowl. He took just a 1 yr deal with the 49ers too, as I recall.
I remember this as well, it really hurt to watch him go to the 49ers. I was constantly watching the news and reading the Herald (that was life before the internet and Twitter) hoping to see Sanders holding up a Phins jersey. Never happened...then he had a monster year that season and won a ring
I remember he even held a press conference while he was here. We all thought we were gonna get him! - sent from my EVO 3D -
Best Damn Corner I ever saw. Mainly cause he was so bloody fast! He could make a bad mistake recover while the ball was in the air and take it back for 6 like it was no big deal! Only thing I'll add he was the WORST Tackler I've ever seen as well.
Can you call someone, who completely revolutionized an entire position in the league for decades to follow, over rated?
Remember when he played for the Braves early in the day and flew down to Miami later to play the Dolphins when he was a Falcon. No way that is an artificial memory..... Someone may be able to elaborate...
Other way around, played Dolphins early in the day and then flew to Pitt to play baseball, but didn't get in the game.
Deion Sanders demand respect and got it, and made you pay dearly for your mistakes. Best shut down corner ever.
He used to arrive in a helicopter for those games sometimes. There were two matchups I used to live for in the mid-'90s. One was when Reggie White was gonna face Erik Williams. The other was Deion vs Jerry Rice.
San Francisco offered Deion more money because Deion said so. Deion goes for the money. In 1996, a reporter asked Jimmy Johnson what would he have done if the Dolphins would have signed him, JJ responded, "I'd cut him". Deion was a very good cover corner, a great punt returner, but he was Sh!t when it came to contact. Biggest puss ever to play in the NFL.
The question is whether he would've made a difference against the Chargers in the 2nd half... IMHO I think if he was playing CB for us, that game wouldnt of come down to Stoyo and we would've gone on to play Pittsburg.
Thats how I remember it too. I read in the Herald that even his mom was lobbying him to come here. It was a huge disappointment when he turned us down and then he said that about SF's chances vs ours.
It's just awesome that you can find out info on **** you couldn't find out about 20 years ago in a blink of an eye using twitter. This is still news to me, at the time we thought Deion was gonna be a Dolphin. FU 49ers.
Yes, that's right. Deion can pretend we don't remember and try to rewrite history, but it won't work with me. He stiffed us for less money. That's totally his right, but he doesn't need to tell it different now than what was being said then.
The team he would have been on was the one that lost to SD in the playoffs when Stoyo missed a last second 48 yd FG. That SD team went on to get trounced in the Super Bowl by the 49ers with Sanders. I don't know for sure if he would have made the difference in our going to the SB that year rather than SD, but pretty good chance he could have.
I remember that fiasco as well. I was stationed at Fort Leavenworth and Sanders even visited the Kansas City Chiefs....showed him at some lake fishing. I'm GLAD we never got Deion Sanders, regardless of what he brought to the table. Couldn't stand prima donnas then...can't stand them now!
You realize he was probably a difference between playoffs and a chance at super bowl at that point right?
Maybe he was a bit overrated in your opinion but it sure as hell beat anything we had at the time and it sure as hell would have stopped Jim Kelly/Andre Reed from roasting us so many damn times. What could have been
