Had off work today, figured I'd grab a notebook and go check it out. I was interested in some of the formation tendencies/packages, and just as a warning generally focused on line play rather than passing drills when there were drills that split the two functions.

    • Fair amount of people skipping work like myself, was like 3/4ths full during work hours.
    • Will Allen, Jake Long, Ray Feinga appeared all on the back section doing sidelines stuff, and Brian Hartline/Brandon Marshall/Richie Incognito/Yeremiah Bell were there but didn't do anything except walk-through style drills
    • Linemen started practicing Cover/Uncovered zone rules. Three linemen vs. 3 defenders(either 1 DL/2LB or the opposite). Within a few minutes they started doing short pull zones where a guard pulls over the tackle next to them
    • Meanwhile the linebackers did jam/cover drills on each other
    • Jason Taylor appears to be back as a Nickel sub. He lined up as the strongside OLB in a passing down drill, but Misi was the guy who got the couple of base 3-4 snaps the starting unit got.
    • They started running full contact 3 vs. 2 blocking drills with one "side" of a line(sometimes including TE) going against a DL and linebacker.
    • Jared Odrick as an end puts Jeron Mastrud on the ground
    • Pouncey gets a good jump off the snap and gets Soliai turned, but slides off the block and falls to the ground.
    • Ronald Fields judo-throws Joe Berger to the ground. Wouldn't have been legal in the game, he basically hooked his arm, but doesn't get any **** from coaches
    • Next snap Pouncey puts Frank Kearse on the ground.
    • Charles Clay as a TE misses a block on McDaniels
    • Pouncey puts Johnny Jones on to his knees.
    • Soliai goes to his knees on a Garner/Berger double team, but seems to have done so to hold his ground.
    • Fatties get a rest and linebackers go against FB/TEs
    • Nic Grigsby has a solid pickup vs. Kevin Burnett.
    • Jonathan Freeny pops Reggie Bush pretty good, helmet to helmet contact and Bush looses what looks like a piece of paint off his helmet. Bush wouldn't have given up a sack, but it wouldn't have been pretty.
    • Everyone besides non STs take a rest, and they practice gunners/blockers, etc. I zone out.
      --------------
    • 11 on 11 drills now, starters in. Defense is as expected with Edds lining up SILB in Dansby's place and Burnett WILB, and Culver at SS for Bell. Starting offense is @OL Murtha LT, Garner/Jerry rotating LG, Pouncey C, Carey RG, Colombo RT. Starting receivers appear to be Gates and Bess as Hartline and Marshall out, and Charles Clay and Reggie Bush with starters.
    • First play goes for little to no, off-tackle outside zone out of a 2-TE formation to the strong side(With Clay@TE).
    • Second play out of balanced 2-TE formation, Bush gets pretty good gain on outside zone right, Soliai drives Pouncey into the backfield 1v1.
    • Some second team subs on the field, play goes for a loss on a pin and pull to the left side out of a weak I-formation, with Bush at RB. Blocking did not develop.
    • Daniel Thomas goes for a solid >5 gain from the I-formation on an inside zone.
    • Lex Hilliard goes for a nice gain after cutting back because McDaniels got free on the front side of the play.
    • Kory Sheets goes for a pair of good gains on inside zones vs the 3rd team defense.
    • Starters back in, Bush goes for negligible gain behind Carey short pull to inside. Interior just gummed up.
    • Tony McDaniels drops Daniel Thomas for a loss/no gain after beating Kopa for a second time.
      -----------
    • Teams break up again, I'm watching more 2v3 pass blocking drills(the first set were run blocking) and ignoring the passing drills down field, figure the papers will cover it.
    • McDaniels beats Carey on an outside move.
    • Soliai gets the better of Pouncey off the snap, but Soliai overextends himself and Pouncey drops him to the ground and falls on him. Wouldn't have impacted a QB pulling out from under Center.
    • Starks abuses John Jerry on an inside move.
    • Murtha contains Jared Odrick pretty nicely off the snap, but gets called for a hold on Odrick's second effort.
    • Kopa gets into good position vs. Wake on an outside move, but Wake switches to power and gets loose to the inside.
    • Langford beats Nate Garner off the snap whom escorts him safely into the backfield.
    • Jerry does a nice job in pass protection vs. Ronald Fields.
    • Taylor pulls an inside move on Allen Barbre that gets some movement.
    • Langford gets the better of Carey on an inside move.
    • Spears and Langford crash to the interior vs. Colombo and Carey, and Carey ends up getting a hand in both defenders chests and holds his ground. Very nice job by Carey and Colombo kinda gets a little push while he effectively blocks two players.
      -------
    • Full 11 on 11 up next. Same starting unit as above passing drills. They appear to be practicing quick passing plays against blitz-heavy passing sub formations.
    • Same starting offense as above.
    • Defensive packages had some interesting wrinkles. With Dansby and Bell out, Sean Smith was playing the ILB role next to Burnett with Culver at SS. Taylor and Wake were the edge rushers, and pretty much exclusively played in 2-point stances, with Jason Taylor frequently shifting from the edge to a stack position like he used to do frequently in Nick Saban's defense.
    • First play Gates catches a short slant with Henne having an outside defender in his face.
    • Good pickup of blitz and Henne goes deep, but his target(Marlon Moore) does not. Blown play.
    • Bush catches a short swing pass against Sean Smith.
    • Sean Smith bats the ball away from Marlon Moore.
    • Matt Moore comes in, bad snap and fumbles.
    • Moore overthrows and Julius Pruitt breaks up a potential Nate Ness INT.
    • Next play incomplete as Jimmy Wilson gets in Moore's face on a blitz.
    • #84(?) with a nice catch over the middle and #44(?) draped all over him.
    • Starters back in, and Henne unloads quickly to Fasano for short game.
    • Gates drops an on target pass against a heavy blitz.
    • Nic Grisby drops a short pass with the 2nd string back in.
      ----
    • Horn rings, and they are practicing hurry-up stuff. Not so much the plays themselves, but getting back quickly to the line, getting snaps off quickly, running QB sneaks in short yardage, etc. Actual route running and defense half-speed.
    • After a few plays they run full speed, Reggie Bush doesn't pull in a pass against Sean Smith down the field. Someone drops an F-Bomb on the field.
    • Bush makes a short catch vs. Sean Smith in the flat. Smith still at linebacker.
---Gonna cut to highlights now, getting lazy.
    • Jimmy Wilson pops #87 over the middle on a short pass, jarring the ball loose. Nice.
    • Matt Kopa gets beat by Kendall Langford this time.
    • Quinton Spears gets what would be a sack on Devlin, but the ball gets loose and Jimmy Wilson tries to fight the ball out of the receiver.
    • Murtha gets chewed out badly by DeGuglielmo, for "not thinking". He also yelled at Jake Long for not paying attention to something a few minutes later.
    • They practice a couple of pin and pull plays out of a 3-TE formation, and then their moms all bring out juice and cookies and the coach tells them how good a job they did and I went home.

Great read. Glad to read something about the blocking up front. Thanks, respect your opinion the most.

Interesting that they are using Sean Smith at ILB though. Seems like they are using his length everywhere in many packages.

Also, no outside zone? Or Power?

My guess is that the Smith thing was merely because both Bell and Dansby were sitting out. Still interesting that they wanted to look at him there instead of Edds though. Smith is my "player to watch" this year.

Excellent report. Thoroughly enjoyed that summary of plays from camp. Btw JT in stack formation...great to know they plan on using him that way...moving him around. Is Sean smith defending TEs on their routes from LB position?

Amen! And that's why I love watching preseason games after halftime because you get to watch the rookies and prospects play, but if he keeps this up we might see him by the 1st quarter.

I think he is going to be a safety on this team, no? His playing style suggests he would be a better safety than corner not to mention we are more stacked at corner and could use more help at safety.

I tentatively agree with you, but I'll throw in the same caveat that Henne defenders did about the scrimmage boos: "It's only practice."

What are your initial thoughts on how Burnett looked? I didn't get much of an opportunity to watch him play last night.

There's a couple of outside zones in there, I think, and from what I saw only one man blocking play where Carey short pulled around the Center.

They didn't do many run plays, though, they seemed to be overwhelmingly dealing with short passes against heavy nickel blitzes.

I didn't really focus too much on whole made a tackle to be honest. Like I said, it was pretty pass heavy, and he didn't seem to be targeted in that regard.

Smith seemed to end up largely on Reggie Bush, but honestly I was mostly checking the blocking then following the ball. My angle wasn't great for some of the coverage stuff, even though they were on the near side of the field.

Like Frayser said, hard to read too much into it with Dansby and Bell out.

Not strictly speaking, but they did run two "pin and pull" type plays. Basically an outside run where all the blockers with defenders lined up "covering" them pulled to the play-side, and all the guys who were uncovered blocked back against the flow. Didn't get much out of it.

    Just sayin.

He was hit and miss, which I suppose is reasonable for his second practice. Nothing particularly noteworthy in 11 on 11s, he missed a block in the drills but then the blocking two players thing was pretty impressive.

Nice write up Disgustipate, much, much better than I could ever do!! I drove down from Orlando with my family yesterday and went to the practice too. I focused on Henne most of the time because I wanted to see for myself how he is doing. As a general fan and definitely no football expert, I was pleasantly surprised. I also liked what I saw from Bush when we used him in a similar fashion the Saints did, but I still have doubts he can be an early down back. I just don't think he is strong enough.

On a different note, my wife and kids (3 daughters who are 15,13, and 11) had a blast!! My wife and I had nice little chuckle when she told me as we were leaving that the girls were already lobbying to stay the night and attend the practice today (Saturday). I am unemployed at the moment, so we couldn't do it. Otherwise it would have made a fun weekend before they have to go to school next month. Special thanks and props to Brian Hartline, Ryan Baker, Jake Long, Clyde Gates, Davone Bess, Vontae Davis, Mike Pouncey and Reggie Bush for coming over to the fence to sign autographs (even though they probably wanted to hit the showers and eat). Earlier, my youngest daughter spun the wheel for $5 and won a Miami Dolphins pennant with Anthony Fasano's signature on it and the girls were lucky enough to get it signed by the guys during the autograph session. We had a great time! It was all they could talk about on the way home. Hopefully we will be able to do it again next year!!

    Steve :)

thanks so much for the report and it sounds like we will have a really good deffense . Now the defense is ahead of the offense but I think we will miss Ronnie and Ricky more then we all think. So we will see in a couple of weeks how the offense is coming together.

Neither he nor Jerry seemed to have any outstanding play for bad or good in 11v11 at LG, but in one of the pass rush drills Langford beat him off the ball very badly.

I'm sure that combination is on the list Sparano made for possible OL combinations (I think our names are on it too). I don't mind if they want to give some players a look here or there, but the sooner the OL is settled and the starters allowed to gel -the better. Too much tinkering and no one will be ready for the Pats. Anyone think Belicheat won't have his guys ready? Unless we have another wildcat-type offense to break out on them, it will be a very tough game to win.

If Tony messes around too long with the OL and this team starts off with a losing record again? Well, I won't be too sorry to see him gone. I hope he can succeed of course, it sucks having to see the steady turnover in the FO and coaches. Stability is a huge plus.
