I haven't checked, but I'll take your word for it. My impression of Jackson is that his big issue is decision making. (Ironic, then, that he was benched for Brett Favre.)

You're arguing two different points. I point out that Orton and Fitzpatrick aren't bad QBs and you say they're not franchise QBs. Then you turn around and try to justify Tarvaris Jackson who clearly isn't a franchise QB.

For the record, the NFL pushed very hard to eliminate 2 pre-season games in favor of the 18 game schedule. So I don't know that point rings as true as you hope it does.

Lots of QBs have "shown something" when opposing defense don't have tape on them and/or schemed for a completely different QB all week. The kid couldn't beat out Todd Collins all season. That's telling.

For the record the NFL didn't push to eliminate all preseason games for a 20 game schedule.

Hanie played well in one game. A lot of one hit wonders in the world of Football. I don't see how you can say he deserves to compete after playing part of one game. Seneca Wallace threw 101 passes, had 4 TD's 2 INT's and a 6.9 YPA figure. Josh Johnson played a fair amount in relief of Byron Leftwich a few years ago. He got benched for a rookie Josh Freeman. That was the year Freeman threw 10 TD's and 18 INT's. How has Hanie shown enough to compete in part of one game, yet Johnson hasn't shown enough to be on the bench after starting 4 and playing in 6? Grasping must be tiring :wink2:

So one of our priorities in the offseason, supposedly, was to bring in competition for Henne. We basically bring in camp fodder and a guy, Moore, who we hope never has to play, then hand the starting job to Henne. I guess the thought process is that a lack of competition will fire Henne up? Henne should have to win the job against legit competition after his play last year.

I keep seeing people say this but the thing no one ever answers is, Who? Which QBs in Free Agency could we have realistically brought in to compete with Henne? It wasn't exactly a premium crop this year?

They should have had someone on the roster already here, because it was known almost 2 years ago what this FA class would look like. That is part of the front offices job to be on top of who could be available one or two years in advance. They have access to the information and should plan accordingly. If they knew the FA class was to be weak, then last year was the year to get a QB in the draft, and then coach him up last year and get him ready to compete with Henne this year. Major mistake by Ireland.

I'm not "justifying" him. I said from the start he's one of the guys that consistently kills it during preseason but can't put it together during the regular season. You were the one that tried to draw a clear line of distinction between Tarvaris Jackson and Ryan Fitzpatrick/Kyle Orton. I was just showing how that's misguided.

You keep bringing up the fact that there are QBs in the top group that aren't really good QBs. I said from the start that preseason is easier than regular season and so this means that if you're in the top group, it's not necessarily a strong sign that you're a good QB. If you keep focusing on it, it shows that you really just don't have an answer to my arguments.

I don't get this. If you're going with Chad Henne, go with him. It's obvious Sparano is under the impression that something could change at the QB position before we get to the regular season. Does he HOPE for that? I don't know, but the way he keeps clinging to it like that, it certainly suggests he does.

If you read the tea leaves I wonder if there's a schism between Sparano and Ireland on this one. It was Tony who went on his little rant about QB mobility after the end of 2010. It was Tony who benched Chad Henne twice. It's Tony who keeps hedging whenever he talks about the QB position. We've even heard rumors before that Jeff Ireland is the one that still clings to the hope that Chad Henne will be good. Remember, it was Jeff who in 2009 (way, way, way prematurely) gave his G.W. style "Mission Accomplished" declaration about Chad Henne as a successful draft pick.

I wonder if this whole time, Tony Sparano has been pushing for a new quarterback, and Jeff Ireland has been killing the idea under the guise of "Ok, but only at the right price..."

That is true, T-Jax was more efficient then people give him credit for being.

I rejected him simply because he is so poor vs the blitz but objectively he was ahead of guys like Matt Leinart but behind guys like Orton, Moore was close to T-Jax, but not ahead of him.

When I've looked at him, I've seen a guy that isn't really a franchise type yet, if he'll ever be, but could make plays because he has that Donovan McNabb thing where he can draw a defense to him and then hit a guy going against the grain, and he can also throw the deep ball.

But, the Seahawks weren't TOTALLY off base for going after him like they did and we'll just see how he does.

Very interesting and hadnt thought about that. I hope not cause we could be in more trouble than I imagined if this is true.

If Henne turns the corner and uses the negativity as fuel, then everything else is moot, but if he doesnt it could be real bad.

This Front Office and team have learned a lot about appeasing fans. Put out that they're going QB in the draft, and don't draft one. Put out they're going to hire Harbaugh, don't offer him a contract. Put out they're going to trade for Orton, don't offer any trade terms. Put out they're going after a veteran QB for competition, bring in Matt Moore. Say Henne is the starter "right now", play him week 1.

And the thing is, you can chide the fans all you want and pretend they don't matter and whatnot...but they do matter. Season ticket sales were proceeding at 40% of their normal pace right as the lockout came to an end. Chad Henne hears those boos at practice, and they hurt. Tony Sparano is sickened by them. Playing with the fans in such a sadistic way has an effect. Especially if you went out and won only 1 game out of 8 at home in 2010.

Actually I thought his LACK of athleticism was his downfall, inow he is not a good enough passer and his legs hold no magic and his toughness is in question imo.

Not that this is a ton of useful info but I did stumble across this. . .

"GM Jeff Ireland had scouted O’Connell coming out of San Diego State three years ago, and offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, then the QB coach with the Jets, had worked him out. Both teams had him on their draft lists, but then New England grabbed him in the third round, the highest the Patriots have taken a QB since Drew Bledsoe went No. 1 overall in 1993."

"His career so far has been disappointing, and he said the biggest challenge has been “the timing and the efficiency you have to play the position. A lot of times as a college quarterback, you could get away with two, three plays a drive where you don’t have to have the best footwork.’’

Sounds like they feel this guy is worth developing into something down the road. Our FO is usually pretty good at finding talent in out of the way places (Devon Bess - undrafted, Camron Wake - CF) who worked out well for us. Maybe they see something that everyone else is missing.

Excellent theory, it would actually explain a lot. We do seem to want a different type of Qb yet we never get one, have to kind of wonder why. Ireland doesn't seem to be serious about providing competition for Henne, the guys we got to compete against Henne are clearly guys that he will beat out in camp. None of them pose a serious challenge to him. And Henne is declared the starter already? I thought it was going to be a job he had to earn this year? Not understanding what we are doing with the Qb position this year, clearly we have one of the worst Qb situations depth wise in the entire league.

  27. CaribPhin

    CaribPhin Guest

If this is true, one would have to think Ross has already guaranteed Ireland's job regardless. Personally, if it came down to that, I'd be comfortable with Ireland still there pulling the personnel strings but with a different coach. Don't get me wrong though, I like Sparano, and want to see him do well.

I believe Ross said last yr that Irish was our best GM since Bobby Beathard and Irish being a fmr Karl Peterson employee I'd say he is enscounced in Davie for awhile.

As for Sparano, imo he stayed to loyal to Henne, so much so he is risking his job for him and that is a huge risk/reward proposition, one that I don't think he should have taken and it may cost him his job.

And I illustrated how there are good QBs in the bottom group, which you failed to acknowledge.

Your arguments are invalid. Your own research proves them to be inconclusive at best. To stand by that research like it's gospel only makes you seem more foolish.

I just watched an episode of the Jets Hard Knocks and it just happened to be the episode where Kellen Clemens takes a pay cut and Kevin O'Connell gets cut. It really wasn't a confidence builder. :pity:

I don't know if Ross said, never saw that quote. I said that recently though and Nabo told me I was full of it, or words to that effect. Actually Beathard wasn't the GM in Miami, he was director of player personnel, so technically the statement is wrong no matter who said it. :)

Be that as it may, I do agree Tony and Jeff are not joined at the hip as for job security. It is very plausible that Tony could be let go next off season, if the team does not win enough games, and Jeff be retained. If that happens and I had to guess one name now for the next head coach, I'd guess Mike Nolan.
