http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/08/07/steve-smith-says-panthers-coaches-are-finally-using-him-correctly/ Maybe this is why we're seeing better stuff from Henne to Marshall---- b/c Henning is finally gone. The more I hear stuff like this, the more I believe Henning was detrimental to Henne's success to the point of nearly ruining him..... and the more I believe that Henning was the reason for Marshall's frustration toward Henne, b/c (after reading Steve's comments) it seems like Chad was merely doing what he was told. Steve saying “The philosophy in years past has been not to screw it up.” sounds eerily familiar to what we experienced last year. Hopefully getting rid of this disastrous mentality is something to be highly optimistic about regarding our offense's success, Henne's development, and the relationship between Henne & Marshall. What I'm saying is------- I still wanna beat Henning with a rubber hose.
This is assertion that the Steve Smith situation applies to Marshall has almost no evidence to support it. Henning left the Panthers at the end of 2006, so how far back does Smith mean in 'years past'? It's impossible to tell. Also Henning was the OC when the Panthers went to the superbowl in '04. Smith seemed happy back then. I am not saying you are incorrect in the fact that Henning was a bad OC. So don't take this as me refuting your point. I just don't think there is a lot of supporting facts in your post to draw a correlation between the Smith situation and the Marshall situation.
Preaching to the damn choir. Glad you finally get it knuckle head... Henning liked to make calls from his box.
Respectfully, I think you missed part of what Smith said. Henning is implied with everything Smith is saying....... and I've seen other quotes from Panther players & fans that back up the whole "play to not screw up" mentality and vanilla to the extreme offense. Considering Henning is the only OC that Smith has had (outside of his rookie year, which doesn't count), I'm led to believe that offensive coordinators includes Henning, or else Steve wouldn't have used the plural form. All we had to do is watch last season to know that Brandon was in the similar situation that Smith is referring to. Henning might've coached on a SB team, but that doesn't mean it changes Smith's feelings which seemed clearly stated. You cant say: well Steve won a SB so he's not as unhappy as he says he was. lol.
I really think with henning gone, we have a chance to pull our offense to middle of the pack, which combined with our defense will tranlsate to winning a few more games. My biggest worry is that when we're on the 25 yard line, and it's 3rd and 7, Sparano will opt for the safe play instead of being aggressive and going for the TD. Not sure how much liberty Daboll will get in those situations, but in some cases, it's the HC's call.
