This is where the rubber meets the road on these expectations that the Dolphins are a better team due to their off season.

Let's operate on the plausible assumption that every year 16 teams get worse and every year 16 teams get better. It doesn't necessarily always work like that, for instance last year only 15 teams had a worse record than they had in 2009, but you get the picture.

If you think the Dolphins are not one of these 16 teams that got worse, then tell me which ones you believe DID get worse. Here are the teams:

    AFC East
    New England Patriots 14 2
    New York Jets 11 5
    Miami Dolphins 7 9
    Buffalo Bills 4 12

    AFC North
    Pittsburgh Steelers 12 4
    Baltimore Ravens 12 4
    Cleveland Browns 5 11
    Cincinnati Bengals 4 12

    AFC South
    Indianapolis Colts 10 6
    Jacksonville Jaguars 8 8
    Houston Texans 6 10
    Tennessee Titans 6 10

    AFC West
    Kansas City Chiefs 10 6
    San Diego Chargers 9 7
    Oakland Raiders 8 8
    Denver Broncos 4 12

    NFC East
    Philadelphia Eagles 10 6
    New York Giants 10 6
    Dallas Cowboys 6 10
    Washington Redskins 6 10

    NFC North
    Chicago Bears 11 5
    Green Bay Packers 10 6
    Minnesota Vikings 6 10
    Detroit Lions 6 10

    NFC South
    Atlanta Falcons 13 3
    New Orleans Saints 11 5
    Tampa Bay Buccaneers 10 6
    Carolina Panthers 2 14

    NFC West
    Seattle Seahawks 7 9
    St. Louis Rams 7 9
    San Francisco 49ers 6 10
    Arizona Cardinals 5 11

EDIT: Please make sure to vote for 16 teams. This poll means nothing if you only vote for a few teams. If you only vote for a few teams, you're missing the point of this poll.

They didn't get worse. They got scary better IMO. Drafted two RBs whom I like. Got Ochocinco, Haynesworth. Still have Brady.

    New York Jets 11 5
I believe they did get worse. Losing Edwards, Smith, and Cotcherry and replacing them with two 34+ yr olds will have a negative impact on their offense. THey're defense also probably took a little hit losing ellis. I know the Jets have made some positive moves and all but I do see some of their chemistry being hurt over this offseason.

    Miami Dolphins 7 9
I think we're better. Not a lot better, but better.

    Buffalo Bills 4 12
Did they improve? Probably. Enough to care? No.

    AFC North
    Pittsburgh Steelers 12 4
I don't think they improved, but i don't think they had to.

    Baltimore Ravens 12 4
    They're better.

    Cleveland Browns 5 11
It's weird to think a team at 5-11 didn't improve but I can't say with confidence that they did.

    Cincinnati Bengals 4 12
Well I think this is a team that has improved and I think they've done a good job getting rid of all the rift-raft thats plaqued their team, but to call them good is a stretch.

    AFC South
    Indianapolis Colts 10 6
THey didn't get any better...They aren't a bad team but they didn't improve.

    Jacksonville Jaguars 8 8
I don't think they did either.

    Houston Texans 6 10
They might have. THeir a talented team but hey are incapable of realizing it.

    Tennessee Titans 6 10
I can't see them improving with a new HC, a new QB, Kris Johnson holding out. Kenny Brits always having problems. This teams a disaster.

    AFC West
    Kansas City Chiefs 10 6
They're a good team but i see them falling.

    San Diego Chargers 9 7
Not really sure what to think of the chargers, but they are a better team than they played last year for sure.

    Oakland Raiders 8 8
McFaddens hurt already, namdis gone, 8-8 may look like they're coming back but i see a regression.

    Denver Broncos 4 12
They'll improve because McDaniels isn't there anymore. That alone is an improvement.

***I don't care about the NFC.

    I would go with:

Cinncy, Jets, Titans, Raiders, Giants, Bears, 49ers, Redskins in no particular order.

That's only 8. Some teams i'm not sure got worse from a offseason perspective, just don't think they can achieve as many wins in 2011 from their win total in 2010, ie they may have overachieved last year based on matchups, injuries etc etc.

Some teams as well with some question marks or lots of offseason moves or moves at very key positions. That doesn't always pan out to equal more success. Sometimes the moves that you don't do are the best.

Teams in that category would be: Pats, Vikings, Cardinals, Seahawks, Eagles.

The AFC E - The Dolphins. I'm on the fence about. Probably because I'm biased. I think we slightly increase our win total (1-2 games) if Henne has a solid yet unspectacular year. If he isn't the answer and Moore is our QB sometime during the season, I would quess we will end up with fewer wins this year. If Henne plays really well, we could be a team that has more wins than last year but only by a fewer games (1-3). I would not be shocked if we are in the 7-10 win category. That is my initial expectation at this point before preseason action.

Bills: I think they make some strides in key areas this year but still need more talent at several positions to compete week in week out. They will suprise some teams.
Pats: Well coached, great solid system and leadership. They just tweak every year. They will be the pats we all hate.
Jets: They mortgaged the farm, brought in some ?? marks and are a Shon Greene injury away from making Sanchez win games himself. Their D will be good, the world will realize he's not a top shelf qb this year. Too many bounces have gone their way and i see a decline in wins this year. Not a lot, their D will be very strong, special teams and offense i think will be the fault of their lower win total this year.

Just my thougths. Good question to ponder heading into the preseason action.

Record wise, I'd have to say the Patriots as well. They will not go 14-2 again. I say 12-4 - but still winning the AFC East.

Wow I think the Falcons improves. They added a solid new rookie WR to help and their defense should be pretty good, possibly better.

I forgot to select the Bengals but they should be awful. I picked: Giants, Jets, Buccaneers, Steelers, Redskins, Bears, Raiders, Titans.

  11. SCall13

Not the one who started the post, but I have to assume he means both. Strength of schedule. A bad bounce here and there. A wide right FG, etc. (Or even not having a special teams field day against the Dolphins) They could all make a difference aside from overall talent on your team.

Yeah, are we going by got worse or will have a worse record? Because I feel like the Cardinals got worse in the long run, but may have a better record. And the Patriots probably got better, but I think they'll have a worse record.

Dolphins worse based on what? Upgrading the LB position. Getting rid of a weak running back position. Upgrading the O-Line (New C, same LT, Richie still here, Vern), getting Marshall healthy and in better shape. Secondary more experienced. Adding depth at OLB. New Offensive Coordinator.

Anyone who says we got worse wants us to be worse to match a belief. It could go either way, but to actually state that, is pretty weird.

Just as surprising that 28 of 43 voters (65%) think the Patriots will be either 14-2, 15-1 or 16-0 this year.

That's really tough to do, even for an elite team.

A poor Defense lost their best cover corner.

    How about

    "worse":

-Carolina, why oh why did they spend the money to return..the same damn team?
-Jest come on man, Plax for Edwards? Mason for smith? Ellis for a rook?
-Titans: lost their best passrusher, Babbin, added, no one,
-Lions a nightmare continues as they are down to 4 scrub tackles
-Chargers, AJ smith continues to dismantle what Schottie built
-Raiders: lost Zach Miller, did not really add anyone

    "better"
-Vikings, McNabb is a PITA, but he fits, Ben Leber is not great loss
-Eagles, lots of talent, can Reid play Ringmaster?
-Bills, Wanny, two Qb's who can play in Gailey's system,
-Texans Wade Phillps may be a wash as a HC, as a Defcord, with Joseph and Manning added, they will be good
-Dolphins: Crowder for Burnett, Bush for Cobbs, JT as a situational player.
-KC: adding Gaither only helps, if healthy their line will be quite good

    Push:

-Patriots, BB is going for a bridge to far on a 14-2 team
-Bucs, they paid a punter big money, the Glazers confused soccer with football, but Josh Freeman covers a lot of mistakes
-Ravens, lost Mason, lost Gaither, Cb is an issue
-Stealers, lost their Tackle, did not add anyone of note
-Browns, Homgren is going to send Shumur into the season with jack **** at Wr?

Not that it counts for much, but I'm hoping the defense keeps us at least at the 7-9 mark, regardless of what we're trying to do with Reggie Bush as a featured back.

That's your opinion and you're welcome to it but I think if this poll appeared on 31 other message boards you'd find people laughing at the idea that saying that the Dolphins are worse in 2011 than 2010 is irrational.

Why do I think they're worse?

    1. Chad Henne is being figured out by defenses faster than he's figuring them out
    2. A new offense only half-installed run by the guy who ran the #31 and #30 offenses in the league in 2009 and 2010
    3. Head Coach got undermined by his owner during the off season
    4. Starting quarterback got undermined by his own front office AND coaches last season and during off season
    5. Offensive line DOWNGRADE (see the shenanigans at RG/RT)
    6. Running backs DOWNGRADE
    7. Pass rush likely to backslide
    8. Very tough front-loaded schedule which is hard for a team to handle if they're mentally weak

It's actually highly remarkable how very few people are willing to vote for the Dolphins on this. People claim to be objective, but this does not appear to be the case.

I think there is a distinction between "getting worse" and "didn't make any significant improvement."

Look at the Bucs for example - I don't know if they really got better. They had a good draft but the guys still need to play. They didn't partake in FA despite having loads of cash, but for all that they didn't lose any big pieces, resigning their FA's. They are essentially about the same. I don't really think you need to say 16 teams got worse and 16 got better.

I picked the teams that I thought might not be as good as last year, because of what happened in the off season. With all due respect to Shula, I don't think that records will always show how good a team is. Injuries, schedules, ect... all have their impact on wins and loses. I cannot wait for the season to start and I can start seeing if the Jets are going to tank it as hard as I think they are. It’s so hard to say considering the nature of the off-season. We don’t even know who is going to be cut that we might sign.

I personally think the Bucs got better, despite themeselves.

    1. LeGarrette Blount only played significantly last year in 11 games. He'll play in more this year and the 2nd year tends to be a BIG one for elite RBs
    2. Mike Williams is on path to be an elite receiver
    3. I really do believe Adrian Clayborn and/or DaQuan Bowers will have an impact
    4. Josh Freeman is on path to be an elite quarterback

I think the Bucs' story is all about elite players getting better, and I think that when elite players grow, it actually moves the needle for a team a lot more than when sub-mediocre or mediocre players grow just a little bit more mediocre or a little bit above mediocre.

I think Miami can definitely do 7-9 again (plus I'm homerish) so I didn't vote for them.

I had trouble picking 16 honestly (but I did). A lot of the teams who did extremely well last year, I think will do well again, just not as well (record wise). That's how I was able to vote for the Pats (for example) even though I think they could definitely win 12 games.

Other teams were "poor" last year winning like 6 games, and I have trouble seeing them do worse, even if I can't see them doing much better.
