Any Observations from watching the Replay?

Watching game again in slo-mo on each play. Some observations:

    1) So far I've seen Burnett guess the wrong hole twice in a row on run plays that gashed us because he went away from the play side. Man, hope he doesn;t vacate the actual playside hole all season or our run D is screwed. Dansby looks like he's trying to play two linebacker spots himself out there vs the run.

    2) I will say we look GREAT against the pass. Our 4 man rush pressure is excellent and our coverage is pretty good (so far).

    3) On the Henne/Fasano incterception two things happened. First, Thomas had good recognition of a blitzer at the last second and got back over to block him in Chad henne's face. Second, that rushers arm HIT Henne's arm on the follow through before the ball was fully released. Watch the slo-mo replay. henne's arm stops moving when it contacts that guy's arm. That's the little extra that would have had the ball leading out in front of Fasano instead of behind him, where he batted the ball up.

I'll add more as I see more.

If anyone else noticed things from re-watching the game please post them here! Let's share what we're seeing.

Mental error on Vontae on that underneath crossing completion where he trailed Julio. Looked off the snap like Vontae didn;t realize that was going to be his man. Gave chase once he realised he was, but too late. (Really disliked that he was 'jogging' after him, not running hard though)

Total lack of second effort on 80% of the defense on that goalline rushing TD we gave up. Definitely played like it was 'just a practice'.

Not liking Henne's body language at all. Not a confident, commanding presence. Hell, at one point an old REF shoves Henne out of the way and Henne looks like a kid being bumped in a high school hallway.

    Blech.

Maybe it was just because of the interception. I'll see if his presence improves as the replay continues.

Yeah, that was my impression, they looked like they were just being influenced blocked out of plays.

Could not find a err.. "source" for the replay so that will have to do, my boi Quniton Spears beats the Tackle and is bearing down on Froman when the game ending Int is thrown, at the 3:04 mark, used a nice move as well.

Tyrone Culver is not as physical as I think the regime likes. Think Jimmie Wilson takes his spot. Culver struggles to take guys down, and not as useful at the line in run support.

Realisitically, you'd need to see Spears making some ST tackles for him to unseat anyone. Whose job would he be taking, btw? Trusnik? If so, Spears is a lock. Trusnik looked very mediocre.

Henne actually got pissed! When Murtha hopped offsides, Henne clapped his hands and yelled a Murtha. The robot is showing some emotion!

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but it looked like, on the Falcon's third drive that Spitler and Edds were playing a lot of zone coverage in the middle while the CBs had man cover.

Have to see more out of him anyway BPK, this was just a start, if folks recall Wake was something of a disappointment until late in the 2nd qtr of the Jags preseason game when he just started killing Tony Pashos the Jags RT, poor Todd Bouman was getting whacked play after play.

One arm over on a OG (Andrew Jackson Fresno State http://www.nfldraftscout.com/ratings/dsprofile.php?pyid=74339&draftyear=2011&genpos=OG) playing out of position at Tackle does not a roster slot make.

However, let him get some passrushing reps and then show what he can do, sink or swim.

I don't think he was guessing, he was run blitzing an assigned gap all the way. It's just he got up field too quickly and completely unimpeded and left the cutback lane wide open.

    Second Henne INT

    1) Again we see that if you don't establish a real running game first, the PLayAction fails to move defenders (especially safeties) significantly. We need to run the ball if PA is to work.

    2) Henne double clutched. Either he almost realised it was a bad idea to throw, or he wasn't sure he felt confident enough he was supposed to throw it.

    3) There was no motion to help Henne diagnose man or zone. Not sure if this was a factor or not. Perhaps he was unsure and that was the double clutch moment. If it had been man, then he could have safely thrown to Bess, who was open... but he ought to have realized it must be zone since #20, the ATL CB allowed Bess to run deep past him and sat in a zone near the LOS. Maybe Henne simply didn't throw it with enough arc... or maybe he failed to recognize zone with certainty.

    4) The CB was actually attacking the LOS, but when Henne came out of the PLayaction he stared right at Bess and the ATL CB immediately read his eyes and began drifting back deep towards Bess again. If Henne even glances left for a beat, I think the CB doesn;t get the break on the ball that he did.

    5) Henne compounded that problem by double patting the ball before throwing it. If you're starting at a receiver, you better throw the ball right away. The longer you wait, the more the D closes on the receiver. The chances of an INT went up because Henne didn't throw it the first time he cocked it.

Gotta say, I don't know what Bess' route was supposed to be, but it looks like Henne's fault to me. I think Sparano's excuse is just to take some pressure of Henne with the fans and media. Not too fair to blame the receiver though. Do that too often and the other players won't respect you as a coach.

*** Actually, one other possibility is that Thomas, the RB was supposed to run out to the CB flats there to 'anchor' that CB, but he didn;t get there, so the CB drifted back. Thomas was caught up in line-traffic though.

Don't know if I agree, since the gap hge was assigned seemed to make no sense, given that there was already an overload of defenders to that side and it was to Karlos' side, leaving no ILB to man the other inside alley.

I mean, all this stuff is guesswork. We're probably wrong 50% of the time. The other 50% we're right. lol.

I went into this week wanting Henne to succeed. I think he has the tools to develop into a great NFL QB. Whether he does... I do not know. However, on first glance of the stats from last night, I felt extremely deflated. His two early INTs had me thinking that this team is done.

After review, I feel a LOT different.

    1) IMHO, that first INT was all Fasano's fault. He bobbled it right into the hands of the LB. That one wasn't really on Henne.

    2) Henne did a very good job on the 3rd down run to sustain a drive, as well as showed some pocket presence by skillfully avoiding a would-be sack on a blitz. He also did a great job on that play by keeping the football away from the defender. He then scrambled, zipped the ball out, and hit Bess in the hands. I think Bess was sliding and just couldn't come up with it. He usually gets those. Even though it wasn't a positive play yards-wise, I just thought it was a great all-around play by Henne, and deserved some mention.

    3) The TD toss to Hartline was about as good a throw as you can make. Good play there.

    4) The 2nd INT... Sparano said Bess ran the wrong route. You could tell Henne double-pumped, I'm sure it was due to Bess not being where he was supposed to be. Henne shouldn't have thrown it.... but, he obviously still thought he could get the ball to Bess. The defender just read his eyes and made a good play. That, I blame both players.

    5) Our OL looked absolutely atrocious. Any early worry I had about Henne that may have subsided... was replaced and DOUBLED by the play of our offensive line. Wow, was that unit just... plain... AWFUL. I really hope that when Big Jake returns, things change, but I am very concerned there.

    6) Daniel Thomas was not my favorite draft pick. I predict he comes far short of making us forget Ronnie and/or Ricky. I hope I'm wrong.

    7) The new offense is 10x better than Hennings. After even just a glimpse, I am happy there so far.

I saw a running game that was non-existent. As Bpk already mentioned, play action is useless if we can't run the ball. It was the same story last year. We NEED to be able to run the ball this year to help take some pressure off Henne and allow the play action to do it's job, freeze defenders so we can hit big plays.

I'm not concerned because it was only the first preseason game after a long lockout, and Long and Bush didn't play but having a solid running game is key to having success on offense with a young QB.

Looked to me like it hit him in the chin after going thru his hands, was right in the middle of his body and not behind him much at all. He might have had to slow for it, that i am not sure of. But for sure he should have caught it. Doesn't get much easier then that.

Burnett had a really nice coverage play on the first drive I think it was. Bit weird seeing a 40's number in the LB corps but that play was something Crowder never gave us.

Vontae jogging on the Jones crossover - hate to see that. He didn't seem to have the best effort out there tonight though he did make some plays. However, I think he may have been expecting help or that the coverage was blown a bit on that play.

Henne wise, I didn't see the possible hit on him on the Fasano INT, will have to recheck - the announcers didn't say anything. Fasano should have come down with it, but it was a poor pass overall barring a defender knocking Henne's arm or body. I do not for one second buy that Henne put it behind him on purpose.

That second INT was bad - reminded me of the Ninkovich INT last year. Henne still struggling with those between defender touch passes. Bad route or not, that ball cannot be thrown in the regular season.

The TD to Hartline was very nice, though it helped he had about 5 yards on anyone from Atlanta. Good throw though.

His mobility was impressive compared to last year. That little juke on the CB blitz was a good move, and the run for the first down was nice.

Overall? A so-so game for him overall. Doubters will still have plenty to doubt, hopers will still hope. I don't think this performance moves the needle much for people on this website, but I think to the average non website going fan they will mostly see the stat line, which did not look good.

Daniel Thomas looked bad rushing, but the OL didn't really give him much of a chance - I will give him a pass. The catch impressed me though. Good feet, good burst. He got his body turned upfield very fast. Didn't fumble.

    Pouncey managed the shotgun snap.

This OL needs Long. If he is out for any length of time, the running game will suffer badly.

Back to defense, the first team unit needs to patch itself up. The Falcons just dominated us on that second drive - if that still is happening by week 1 we have a problem. I have confidence they can get it fixed. The second TD drive didn't look great either, but we did have a good number of backups in at that point.

Had to work and am watching my recording, so am only partway through the second quarter at this point.

Upon replay, the pass to Bess (great diving catch) that initially was said to be a poorly thrown ball was actually placed where only Bess could get to it.

If Henne tries to hit Bess in stride, it's a pick 6 by the corner undercutting the throw.
Instead, Chad wisely throws to where it's either caught by a reliable receiver with great hands or its an incompletion. Great throw & decision IMO, one worthy of credit rather than criticism.

I know this is just the first pre-season game and no reason to push the panic button, but I sure hope things improve. There were way too many times in this game when we looked like we really were clueless. Henne's composure and mechanics looked awful at times. Lets hope this improves with the next game. If they still look like this at the end of the preseason, we could be in trouble, but it's still too early to tell.

First game in a new scheme w/o Brandon in the starting lineup (which is significant IMO b/c for the past few weeks that's not how we've been practicing it). If the miscommunications etc are happening after week 4, I'll be worried.

Right now IMO it's more about timing and trying to gain familiarity within the new offense than anything else. I don't wanna judge these guys too harshly while they're trying to iron out kinks. Hartline & Bess weren't on the same page for 2 pass attempts...... and I'm not holding it against them either. We've got a lot of work to do over the next 3 games, so I expect these guys to make some mistakes. If these mistakes don't gradually reduce in frequency, then we have a problem. Until then, let's just enjoy some football, right my friend.

I guess I am not seeing the urgency in all of this preseason stuff. We played a very good Atlanta Falcons team... They handled our vanilla defense and offense well... but as the game wore on it looked like our depth proved to be better than theirs and they are a team that is expected to compete for the NFC championship. I am not putting much of anything into any of our preseason games. Every team "practices" something different during these games.

I like our depth on defense and pray to whatever higher power anyone chooses that Misi is alright. I would not mind having Crowder back as a running down linebacker... that man can play the run. He plays the run almost as well as he runs his mouth.

If we have a poor season despite that depth, it also suggests that our GM has been doing his job these past few years but our coaching staff has not.

i still would like to see get O´Hara signed, when we speak of depth, we already read that some LB`s will be brought in, apparently Shawn Merriman had a very good game for the bills on back to back plays sacking the QB, man if we would have just gotten that waiver claim instead of the bills, when merriman returns to form he would have been the jackpot

+1 on O'Hara...It looked to me like Carey and Cog couldn't hold their blocks for more than a second on the running plays. And I saw Columbo and Carey falling down quite a bit. Pouncey I think missed a linebacker on one run. I didn't see anything horrible from Murtha aside from the false start. But I think we need OL help in a bad way.
