Matt Roth? (Im a Jags fan)

Well, TBH he was much better as a SOLB then as a DE for us, he hasn't played LDE in 3 seasons, when he did play, his groin gave him problems and he missed time often.

From Dolphins fan pov, his signing in Jax made no sense, now I think they run a "hybrid" 4-3/3-4.

 

Well... he was the 2008 World Daggerin' Champion, IIRC.

 

I remember he was a liability in coverage, but his tackling was sound and he was good versus the run. As a DE in a 2 gap 4-3 I'm not really sure, last time he did play in a 43 was at Iowa. Dude is a tough sob though, Should be a decent starter for you guys.

 

In 08 Joey Porter got the headlines with 15 sacks, but Roth was a more efficient passurhser, there are some good Pro Football Focus articles that include him as one of the better passrushers in the league, as a SOLB, as a DE, he had injury problems constantly in Miami, then he had a weird holdout/injury situation and he was waived.

As a hand in the ground DE, I suspect you will be disappointed as Roth has comically short arms and without the movement that playing OLB allows, well, just wish you luck with him, he is quite intense however, should be fun to watch anyway.

All of the above. He was a much better SOLB than DE. Strong against the run and set the edge very well. Definately a tough guy, and as others alluded some kind of strange attitude thing. The type to walk into a bar and pick a fight with the biggest dude he could find and probably kick his butt. Actually, I think he was in trouble in college for a bar fight or something. Really was marginal at DE in a 4-3.

 

He can definitely set the edge against the run and create disruptions in the backfield. He's not a consistent passrush threat, but I seem to remember him having an occasional multi-sack game for the Browns. I think it just depends on who he is matching up against on a week to week basis.

IMO, hes miscast as a 3-4 olb. 4-3 run support DE all the way. High motor bull rusher

 

His short arms appear to be a negative but when you look at his pass rush metrics on Pro Football Focus hes certainly a viable rusher at least as a 3-4 OLB.

Roth last season had 392 plays as a pass rusher (1040 total) generating 4 sacks, 10 hits and 40 pressures or an average of getting to the Qb once every 7.5 or so pass rushing downs. Only shaun Rogers had a higher grade last season for Cleveland. Granted its Cleveland but still not bad.

In 2009 as a Brown in 164 pass rushing downs he generated 5 sacks, 3 hits, 14 pressures for an average of getting to the Qb once every 8 pass rushing downs.

Pretty consistent if nothing else. Will be interesting to see how he does as a 4-3 end. The Jags struggled with their rush at times last season but while I dont think Roth can be the guy to change all that, I think he can be part of the answer and cutting him was a mistake by this regime.

 

Finsnation had some really funny stuff on Roth, to bad it has been lost in their archives as it was lol funny.

His faux injury "holdout" was called "his hangover days".

Demetrius - Good to see a Jags fan. I live in Jacksonville and they've become a team of interest for me and as well as a team I root for, except when playing the Dolphins or if an a battle for the playoffs vs. the Dolphins.

I think Matt Roth is better suited for a SOLB in a 3-4. He really played well for us there and did an even finer job in Cleveland there. The Jaguars need a pass rusher and I don't find Roth to be that. He will do a wonderful job setting the edge and improving a mediocre edge setting defense. I think he'll be a starter for the Jags, but really one of those "rotational" guys. You'll see him coming out on a lot of passing downs because he just doesn't bring a lot of creativity or athleticism as a pass rushing player.

 

Wrong answer. He transitioned well into that 3-4 OLB spot. Much better fit. Set the edge as was said before and had 5 sacks in his last season as a Dolphin.
I don't see Matt Roth being successful as a 4-3 DE.

 

While I think Roth is best suited for 3-4 Sam, I believe he can hold his own as a 4-3 RDE too. I have no problem with the Jags, respect Del Rio for the kind of player he was and consider him a solid level headed coach too. Hope Roth does well for them, except when we play them.

 

I expect Matt to piss a positive for PEDs this season.

 

I think Roth is a fine pick-up for the Jaguars, and it's worth being enthusiastic about. I don't really believe that he'll suddenly be ineffective as a 4-3 DE, but I think there are some issues.

He's never really been a "true" 4-3 DE. In Nick Saban's defense, what was asked of him was more like a 3-4 DE. He was a 2-gap 5-technique for the most part, and eventually gained a bunch of weight to play that position and started kicking inside to Defensive Tackle in passing situations, like a typical 3-4 DE.

I think the biggest concern is that a lot of Roth's production came when he's been isolated on Tight Ends in a way that won't be as easy to replicate if he's going to be a "true" 4-3 DE. Basically as an OLB he had a 6'5" 300lb. DE lined up in a position that meant the Tackle was typically going to be blocking him, leaving Roth dealing with a guy he could easily overwhelm.

Roth still punches way above his weight class, but it'll be less dramatic against Tackles I think.

 

as in, without a football schedule to keep him busy, he seems to make a good candidate for some survivalist group...or a serial killer lol
