Cam Newton will start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers against the Miami Dolphins at Sun Life Stadium on Friday night.
Newton, 2011 Heisman Trophy winner and first-overall pick out of Auburn, will play with the first team before yielding to Jimmy Clausen in the second quarter, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said on Wednesday.

"It's just following in line of what we had planned throughout training camp, and that was to go back and forth, back and forth with our guys," Rivera said. "It's a good opportunity.

"We want to make sure everybody gets an opportunity to play and work with the guys, and we feel it's important to keep that competition going," he said.

I said it in the run-up to the draft and I'll say it again: Cam Newton will dominate the NFL. It might take him a year before this happens, but he will dominate the NFL just like he dominated the SEC.

Riskiest pick of the draft, I would have drafted Gabbert over him in a heartbeat. We'll see how he reads defenses in the NFL.

I think they made the right pick. He has the most ability to transform a team.

They said the same thing about Sam Bradford coming out because he was used to the spread offense. We'll see how Gabbert reads defenses too! There's no guarantees that Gabbert will be a smarter QB than Cam.

Cool, now fans have even more reason to come out and watch a pretty much meaningless preseason game.

I've heard tickets are 5 bucks as well (via Twitter)

For the first time in almost a year, Chad Henne will be the best QB on the field.

Don't sleep on Henne Circling. He's gonna put up some numbers, Kerry Collins circa 2000-2002 style.

I am excited to see how Cam does. He looked fairly good against the 2nd stringers, but then again I think there is possibly a big drop between a full 1st string defensive unit and a full 2nd string unit in terms of talent and level of play. Cam was smart about when he attacked down field. He didn't throw into double coverage deep. He made, what seemed to be, solid down field reads. But I assume a full defense of 2nd string players aren't as adept at hiding coverages from the QB as the 1st string D is. So I am excited to see how he does.

In the first game he was more accurate than I thought he was going to be, I had very low expectations :). Should be good for the Panthers to see how does against the Phins D.

Well, seeing as how rookies always have amazing games against us, I expect Newton to have 100 rushing yards, 150 passing yards, and 2 passing TD's halfway through the first quarter.

I like what Carolina did with him Saturday. They didn't start him which IMO was a great way to reduce the pressure of his first NFL appearance..... and then they gave him some simple plays to ease into the game and get the confidence going.

He is a very talented player and if he has the right coaches and players around him he will do well .Miami with its above average DBs will be a good test for him although I suspect he will be given vanilla plays to run.

IMO he is better player than Michael Vick .He only needs some experience to be among the top QBs.

Newton is a better passer and almost as good a RB.

Not a big Newton fan or believer....hope Miami's D tears him up. I would really expect our defense to send a lot of pressure his way and try to get him to make poor decisions

I opened this thread expecting to see a bunch of people laughing at the panthers sending a rookie out against our rather good defense. Ya know, some real positive emotions about our team as they can't possibly look bad against a weak armed, inaccurate rookie whose still learning.

but no. most of what i see are cracks about Henne and actual ****ing praise for the panthers for drafting newton.

    for shame.

seriously, we're going to make him look like a clown.

Newton is a special talent. His physical skills will buy him the time needed for the game to slow down for him mentally in the passing game. DC's will have a nightmare game planning against him. Like Brian Baldinger said if Carolina goes 4 wide is a team going to defend with dime defense? Cam at 250 lbs already is one of the most physical runners in the NFL. I wouldn't be surprised if at the end of the year he is in the top 5 for QBs for plays over 20 yards (arm + feet). Does need to get out of the habit of throwing off his back foot.

I wish we had a QB that talented wearing a Dolphin uniform. I think he will be a PHENOM!

I got a chance to watch a few of the games last week. I may be wrong, but I thought there was more blitzing and stunts being run by defenses in week 1 of preseason than in the past.

I wonder if Nolan brings the wood or tests his secondary.

The only concern with Sam was if his shoulder was ok after getting injured and missing most of 2009. He'd put up two outstanding seasons before that. Newton was a 1 yr wonder. He'd done nothing before 2010. Bradford came out of college having played 31 games at a high level. Usually extensive starting experience in college bodes well for a 1st round drafted QB's NFL success, as well as how accurate they are and Bradford had a 67.6 career comp pct. That's excellent when combined with 31 games as a starter.

Newton may be great, but he is no slam dunk to be great. Usually 1st round QBs with so little college experience do not turn out very well. He may be the exception. We will see.

I'm not buying Cam Newton as a premiere QB in this league until he proves he has the work ethic. I'm not sure how much to read into the ICON statement, but if he expects things to come easy in the NFL without putting the work in, he's Jamarcus Russell part 2.

If CK and others who vehemently defended Cam are correct then I agree with you. If he can make correct reads and go through multiple progressions, he will be better than Vick. I just had my doubts that he can make that adjustment quickly. But time will tell, he has the highest reward potential, but Jamarcus esq bust level if he busts. I do think if Car is patient with him, he doesnt bust out like Russel. Since being drafted, Cam has impressed me with how he has carried himself and seems to want to succeed. But again time wll tell

Not so much high on his skill set as qb but as an athlete kid has all the potential in theworld. I wish we had a qb on this team with the passion that he shows in the game. Nothing against henne because he has better intangibles but have to love the kids passion and leadership that the young man shows.

People who are saying he is like JaMarcus Russell, or will bust that badly, are just wrong. That's almost impossible given Cam's work ethic. JaMarcus Russell was unbelievably bad, and didn't work AT ALL. Listen to the two of them talk and you can already tell. Cam Newton wants to win.

What is the origin of the work ethic critique of Cam Newton? Are there reports of him being lazy in college, or is it based on the fact that you have to put even more time studying, etc in the the NFL versus college?

That's not really a ringing endorsement. Vick, other than his one good season in Philly, has had a pretty lousy career as a QB.

IMO, Cam will do nothing in the NFL and be a huge bust.

How does that even make sense? If a RB failed to put up good rushing stats would he be a good RB? Of course not.

Vick, overall, has been a horrible QB. I predict he'll either be hurt or just flat out replaced by VY at some point this season.

Because a QB impacts the game in many ways outside of throwing the ball. He single handily made that team successful and didnt put up great throwing stats. Vick had terrible WRs while in ATL that deflated his completion %. Considering his running ability and he had 72 TDs and 52 career INTs with Atlanta, I wouldnt say that is "Horrible" He wasnt a great throwing by any means. But he was good.
